Series Mania has always been about discovery: Of drama series as an art form, in its early days from launch in 2009; then of key players on a burgeoning international premium TV scene.
Series Mania’s International Panorama now catches a new wave of creatives transitioning from film to scripted TV – Israel’s Yaron Shani with “Innermost,” Spain’s Isaki Lacuesta and Isa Campo with episodes of “Apagón”; and highlights notable emerging auteurs: Denmark’s Kasper Møller Rask, Canada’s Alexis Durand-Brault, Spain’s Fran Araujo, Pakistan’s Assim Abassi and Germany’s Jakob and Jonas Weydemann.
But for having already bowed at national festivals, some of the 12 titles below could well have been in the running for a Competition berth.

The cost-of-living crisis is wreaking havoc and the global TV industry is not immune.
As hundreds of buyers and sellers descend upon the UK for the annual London TV Screenings, distributors are looking closely at how they can adapt their catalogs and work in tandem with clients in the face of the incoming recession.
However, the task is not an easy one. Numerous distributors tell Deadline they have had contingencies in place for a long time to deal with such a macro fiscal event – contingencies that came to the fore during Covid-19. These are frequently being shaped by the world around them, not just by recession, they say.
“The ongoing strategy we have and the way we approach the market is constantly evolving,” says Ruth Berry, ITV Studios’ Managing Director of Global Distribution, who was recently promoted to lead the outfit’s combined Distribution and Entertainment arms. “Thinking about these...

“Kids in Crime,” a high energy 22-minute episode coming of age drama with a notable turn by Scandi superstar Jakob Oftebro as a not-to-be-messed-with local drug lord, walked off with the 2023 Nordisk Film & TV Fond Prize for best drama series screenwriting.
Federation Studios handles international distribution.
Hardly known – his major calling card to date was a 2017 short, “The Hunger, a Young Director Award at 2019’s Cannes – Karlstad won out against stiff competition with a high-energy half hour drama set in 2001 in Norway’s drab Sarpsborg in which three roofie-fuelled teen friends run up with local drug kingpin Freddy Fingers (Oftebro).
“An impactful new offering, “Kids In Crime” presents Karlstadt’s nose for rebellious but tight narratives and a set of teenage characters hoping to live with the volume turned high,” Variety wrote in an interview with Karlstad.

Distributed by ITV Studios, “Blackwater,” the new banner series from Apple Tree producer Piv Bernth – behind iconic Scandinavian series “The Killing,” “The Bridge” and “Borgen” – opens in premonitory mode with the camera panning away from a falcon to take in the Lobber River’s white water and churning slate grey currents as a supernatural horror-movie chant bleeds into the soundtrack.
The foreboding anticipates a double murder on the river’s banks and conveys a broader sense sluicing the series of the menace of nature itself – both the chilling woods around Blackwater, a village in mid-Sweden, and latent human brutality.
In 1973, on Midsummer’s Eve, Annie, a young in-love schoolteacher who has just arrived in the area, discovers the bodies of two murdered tourists on the banks of the river. Glimpsing a man running away from the crime scene, she will live in fear for the next 20 years, sleeping with a shotgun beside her bed.

“It is a crazy situation. So there we are, completely screwed.”
Those were the words of Apple Tree Productions’ Lars Hermann today in Rome at the Mia Market explaining the wild ongoing situation between Denmark’s creative community and the local and global streamers that could create a loss of up to 1.5B Dkk (200M).
An impasse over digital rights between Create Denmark, a union-led organization that represents directors, writers and actors, and the likes of Netflix, Viaplay, TV2 and Amazon has meant no new TV series or films in the country from streaming services since January 1 due to their high costs.
Hermann, who co-founded the ITV Studios-backed Apple Tree with former Dr drama chief Piv Bernth, told delegates this morning that “greed” from Denmark’s creative community had played a large role in unprecedented situation, while the lack of transparency from streamers over content performance exacerbated the situation.

ITV Studios is growing its sizeable global footprint with a new Spanish scripted production company that extends one of the super-indie’s most recognizable banners.
Leading Italian producer Cattleya, the makers of “Gomorrah,” “Suburra” and “ZeroZeroZero,” will expand into Spain with Cattleya Producciones. Led by former Netflix executive Arturo Díaz — in a rare instance of streaming talent rejoining the production ranks — the company will specialize in high-end drama for Spain and the global market.
Díaz, who will serve as managing director, was recently director of original content at Netflix, overseeing series in Spain and Latin America, and based out of Los Angeles for five years. His executive producer credits include the smash hit “Las Chicas de Cable,” the streamer’s longest-running non-u.S. series. He also oversaw the development of “Elite” and the recent “Rebelde” reboot.

While some had argued that the third season of a series might not be fit to screen at the Berlinale’s Drama Series Days, the major departures in narrative and setting executed in the third and final season of Dr’s “Follow the Money” justify its inclusion.
The first two seasons of the hyper-popular Danish crime series peeked into the boardrooms and office spaces of big banking and focused on white collar crime. In Season 3, the series drops down into the streets, and focuses on how the banks get tied up in drug money laundering.
In addition to critical and audience plaudits, Season 1 of the series scooped Danish Academy Robert Awards for best series, best actor and best supporting actor, while securing three further acting nominations, validating the series’ heavily character-driven plots.

Lille France — Bigger and better. That was the goal for this year’s edition of the Series Mania Co-Pro Pitching Sessions, the first since the festival moved from Paris to Lille. A prize of $50,000 was on the line for the winning series, awarded to the American-created, Swedish-made dramedy “We Got This!” the last project to pitch on the day.
“I decided to build a story about a misunderstood creature,” American series creator Schiaffino Musarra said during his pitch, one of the lightest of the day: “An ignorant and impulsive American. He is heavy, bearded and quite handsome.”
It’s worth pointing out that Musarra plays the lead character in the series.
“Interestingly, I had been pitching this as an idea on a piece of paper for about five years. Nobody wanted to do it,” he explained of the series inauspicious beginnings.
“Comedy is notoriously difficult to prove on a piece of paper,...

BBC drama controller Ben Stephenson and Piv Bernth, head of drama at Danish broadcaster Dr, home of the original The Killing and The Bridge, shared their views on co-productions this morning in Cannes. The duo, who each work for public broadcasters, also touched on dealing with U.S. partners and the courage of their convictions. Scandinavia is a hot spot for drama, but Bernth says she only gets 4% of Dr’s budget for drama so she’s “working with all kinds of different partners” and “trying to keep our feet on the ground.” She also confirmed that Killing creator Soren Sveistrup is working on a project for Cinemax, which he’ll present to the network within the next month. Stephenson is careful to avoid the dreaded “Europudding,” or what he terms “Mid-Atlantic pudding,” but says, “In the past, all countries thought their drama was their drama, but today actually we...

The Killing creator Soren Sveistrup is developing a new crime drama with Cinemax.
Sveistrup devised the original Danish version of The Killing, which ran for three series and aired to great acclaim on BBC Four in the UK.
His new Cinemax project will be a bilingual action thriller, according to Broadcast.
"[Cinemax] like the tough, hard stuff, the action dramas, and we have Soren Sveistrup working on something," said Piv Bernth, producer of The Killing and head of drama at Danish broadcaster Dr.
The cable network's current original series include Alan Ball's Banshee, Sky co-production Strike Back and a new series based on the Transporter film franchise.
Sveistrup previously ruled out the possibility of reviving his former show The Killing for a fourth series.
"I'd hate it to just be another show - just another mass-produced show - ongoing and not really reflecting anything," he explained.

Be truthful, be human, get naked: 1995's groundbreaking manifesto didn't just shake up cinema. It inspired Danes to make the world's best TV, buildings and food (if you like fried mould with your grasshopper)
• Interview with Thomas Vinterberg
'Il est merde!" yelled Mark Kermode, from the back of the cinema. "It is shit!" The year was 1998 and Kermode – then Radio 1's film critic – had not taken kindly to that year's Cannes film festival. Specifically, he was narked by a new work by Lars von Trier called The Idiots, a film shot with shaky cameras that centred on an orgy-loving group of rebels who, in public, acted like people with mental disabilities.
The Idiots was one of the first films to emerge from the Dogme 95 movement. Three years earlier, its ringleader Von Trier had stood up at a Paris conference and showered its audience with pamphlets. These were the bigwigs of...
