As endurance tales go, Frenchman Henri Charrière’s is one of the most intense, a case of wrongful imprisonment that moves from the degradation of a notorious penal colony to the isolated awfulness of Devil’s Island. Charrière’s 1969 book “Papillon,” named for his moniker (derived from a butterfly tattoo) and an autobiographical dramatization of his experiences, became a popular, controversial memoir in France. So why has it inspired not just one but two so-so prison escape films?
Franklin J. Schaffner’s 1973 epic of grime and sweat “Papillon” was made from a screenplay co-written by Dalton Trumbo. It boasted megastar Steve McQueen in you-can’t-break-me mode ten years after “The Great Escape,” but to lesser effect, and Dustin Hoffman — as Papillon’s pal Louis Dega — once more flexing his peculiar gift for disappearing into a role and chewing scenery simultaneously. At two and a half hours, it barely justified its running time,...

Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman brought star power to this escape-from-Devil’s-Island epic back in 1973. Now Papillon has been remade with Charlie Hunnam and Rami Malek in the roles of two prisoners who plan to bust out of their dehumanizing cage in colonial French Guiana. Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) and Malek (Mr. Robot) are not quite box-office names yet, but their acting chops are undeniable. And this true-life tale, based on the 1969 memoirs of Henri Charrière, still holds your attention. But Danish director Michael Noer, working from a script by Aaron Guzikowski,...

Beta sells other territories on the film based on Noah Gordon’s trilogy of books.
The Physician’s producers Wolf Bauer and Nico Hofmann have indicated that they may take on the other two books of Noah Gordon’s trilogy, of which The Physician is the first part: Matters Of Choice and Shaman.
Speaking exclusively to ScreenDaily ahead of the world premiere of The Physician in Berlin on Monday evening, Bauer explained: “We have discussed this with Noah Gordon and would have access [to the properties].”
“But we won’t have this discussion before the film has reached 3m admissions in Germany and Spain,” said Bauer, who is currently reading Shaman for the seventh time.
Moreover, the producers would have freedom in casting since Shaman is set in the 19th century some 800 years after the events in The Physician.

Ever since the rocky start at the Venice Film Festival, things haven’t been looking promising for Madonna‘s W.E.. The Weinstein Company was reportedly re-editing the film and then recently pushed back its roll-out. The first theatrical trailer has arrived and it actually looks somewhat appealing, mostly technical-wise. The Lives of Others cinematographer Hagen Bogdanski is behind the camera and Abel Korzeniowski, who gave us the wonderful score for A Single Man, composed here.
I can see the complaints of the two storylines forced together in a false fashion, but even if this is a disaster as many have claimed, it doesn’t seem like a dull one. it's not Tuesday but it's time for a Top Ten anyway... as this is yesterday's news already!
AMPAS used to hide their membership roster like the vote tallies but in the information age, they've opened up. Now we get to see the whole list of new invitees each year. I wonder how they keep they're membership around 6,000 given how many people they invite annual. Maybe enough people reject the offer, stop paying their dues, or pass from this mortal coil each year to balance it out?
You can read the full list of recipients at Indiewire, but as is the Film Experience tradition, we like to pinpoint the newest (potential) members whose future ballots we'd most like to see. So let's have at it.
New Academy Member Ballots We Most Want To See

They're two separate people but we'd like to imagine them filling out their ballots together inbetween sets.

HollywoodNews.com: Adam Sandler is gearing up for the release of his new film, “Grown Ups,” and has just been announced as one of 135 artists selected to join the Academy.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is extending invitations to join the organization to 135 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures. Those who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2010 to the Academy’s roster of voting members.
“The work of these individuals has been appreciated by moviegoers all around the world,” said Academy President Tom Sherak. “The Academy is proud to invite each and every one of them.”
The Academy’s membership policies would have allowed a maximum of 180 new members in 2010, but as in other recent years, the several branch committees endorsed fewer candidates than were proposed to them. Voting membership in the organization has now held...

Is this Emily Blunt's year? I really hope so... Even though this is also the year fellow British actress Carey Mulligan (via An Education) made her magnificent acting known outside of the UK. So how was Blunt's acting as the young Victoria? Is the movie Oscar-worthy? Is her performance Oscar-worthy? Says Empire:
An elegant, entertaining, informative picture with a gallery of vivid supporting turns, this provisionally crowns the winning Blunt as a Brit-pic star - but it skimps a bit on the bodice-ripping, blood and thunder. - - -

There's something about donning a Queen's crown that brings out the best in actresses. Cate Blanchett, Helen Mirren and Judi Dench have thrived as monarchs, and now it's the turn of Emily Blunt to take on an iconic British ruler. Blaming her "sly eyes" for constantly being cast as bad girls,...

Germany's association of film critics have named Hans-Christian Schmid's exorcism drama "Requiem" as the best German film of the past year but it was the Oscar-nominated "The Lives Of Others" that cleaned up, with a total of four critics awards.
"Requiem" star Sandra Huller picked up the best actress award for her harrowing portrayal of a young woman perhaps possessed by demons.
Huller, who stars in Forum entry "Madonnas", won the Berlinale Silver Bear last year for her "Requiem" performance.
Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck added to his trophy-case full of awards for his debut, "The Lives of Others", winning the Best First Film prize. Sony Pictures Classics just bowed the Stasi drama in the U.S., where it earned $223,000 on its opening weekend, the best-ever domestic bow for a German-language title.
"The Lives of Others" won three more critics awards. Star Ulrich Muhe took the best actor nod for his ice-cold performance as a Stasi surveillance specialist who begins to question his profession; best editing went to the film's Patricia Rommel and best cinematography to "Lives" cameraman Hagen Bogdanski.
