Amid a fertile alternative music scene in the U.K., spurred on by a flurry of new independent labels, bands like Echo & the Bunnymen had to work harder to stand out from the pack. The austere, post-punk minimalism of the group’s first three albums earned them critical acclaim and a cult following, but by 1984 their sound—Joy Division as fronted by Jim Morrison, if you will—was in need of retooling. Was there space for another scrappy, dour foursome alongside more established acts like Siouxsie and the Banshees, an ascendant U2, and unique sounds from the likes of Cocteau Twins and Depeche Mode?
Echo & the Bunnymen’s fourth album, Ocean Rain, would prove to be their shining moment. The quality of the songwriting ensures its status as a classic, separating it from both the band’s more uneven earlier works and their patchy, self-titled follow-up from 1987.

Paramount+ today announced that the critically acclaimed documentary Kiss the Future, which made its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival and opened the Tribeca Festival in 2023, will premiere exclusively on the service in the U.S. and Canada on May 7. The documentary features interviews with Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, Christine Amanpour, Bill Clinton, and more.
Produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon for Artists Equity and Sarah Anthony, Kiss the Future was directed by Nenad Cicin-Sain and written by Bill S. Carter and Cicin-Sain. It is based on Carter’s memoir Fools Rush In.
The film tells a story of defiance amid the 1990s siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian War, focusing on a vibrant, underground community that used art and music to affect change; a community that garnered global attention by ultimately inspiring an American aid worker to reach out to the band U2 to help raise awareness of the devastating conflict.

Founded in 1999 by Tony Bennett and Susan Benedetto, Exploring the Arts (Eta) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to strengthen the role of the arts in American education by returning arts-enriched programming to public schools across the country. To this end, Eta develops programs that connect private funders, individual artists and cultural institutions to public schools as a way to achieve greater equality of resources and opportunity for youth of all means and backgrounds. Eta champions programs and curricula that: (1) teach young artists to embrace true craft over the cult of fame that pervades our culture; (2) promote interdisciplinary learning by integrating the arts with standard academics; and (3) that encourage social consciousness and a commitment to community.

“You can literally film anything in Ireland that you want to — obviously desert scenes are a bit complicated, but we’ll have a go.” In this quick quip, veteran Irish producer Tristan Orpen Lynch sums up so much about his home country’s movie business right now. A fresh swell of opportunity and confidence may be swirling through it, thanks to the government’s decision to allow producers to claim back 32 percent of any spend on film, TV and animation to $134 million, up from $75 million. However, insiders say it’s actually in the midst of a deeper sea change built upon decades of investment, support and training — always combined with the nation’s innate charm and visually striking locales.
In 2021, the Irish screen industry rapidly bounced back after Covid to generate €500 million ($547m) local spend, its highest ever and 40 percent more than the last record set in 2019. Roll on 2023, and...

For years, Ricky Stanicky has been the ultimate scapegoat for whatever mischief best buds Dean, Jt and Wes cooked up. When they nearly burned down a neighbor’s house as kids, Ricky took the blame. That’s what friends are for, right? Except Ricky’s not real. The trio invented him in their teens, and they’ve been pinning things on him ever since. Now, with their significant others starting to get suspicious, the three amigos decide to hire an actor to play their imaginary friend.
Directed by Peter Farrelly, “Ricky Stanicky” is a raunchy, R-rated return to form for the “Dumb and Dumber” co-director: an unapologetically lowbrow buddy movie, featuring the funniest performance yet from up-for-anything wrestler John Cena in the title role. Remember, Peter is the Farrelly brother who went off and made best picture-winning “Green Book,” followed by the (largely unseen) Vietnam drama “The Greatest Beer Run” with Zac Efron.

U2 wrapped the inaugural residency at Las Vegas’ $2.3 billion technical and visual marvel Sphere this weekend, closing out a 40-show run that started in September. Fittingly, the legendary band did so by bringing things full circle.
The shows commemorated one of U2’s most successful records, the chart-topping 1991 release Achtung Baby, played in its entirety with selected tracks from other U2 efforts over the years. To further honor the album, U2 bandmates Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Bram van den Berg (sitting in during the residency for an ailing Larry Mullen Jr.) welcomed Achtung Baby producer Daniel Lanois to the stage Saturday night to play guitar and sing backup on the track “One.”
“There would be no Achtung Baby without Daniel Lanois,” Bono said in welcoming him up the back stairs with a request to the audience. “Show him your light,” and they did by holding up smartphone flashbulbs in a beautiful scene.

Insofar as calling out disingenuous-seeming celebrities goes, Bono is pretty low-hanging fruit. But that hasn’t stopped Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters from lashing out at the U2 frontman in a recent interview, calling him an “enormous shit” for his support of Israel during the nation’s ongoing conflict with Hamas and occupation of Palestine.
The comments came in a recent discussion between Waters and Al Jazeera, in which the Pink Floyd songsmith reaffirmed his condemnation of Israel’s policy towards Palestine, and emphasized the importance of speaking out against war-mongering politics. When asked what he would say to artists who’ve remained quiet during this time, Waters turned his ire towards Bono.
“Anybody who knows Bono should go and pick him up by his ankles and shake him until he stops being an enormous shit,” Waters said, referring to a recent U2 performance at the Sphere where Bono expressed...

U2 singer Bono paid tribute Saturday night to recently deceased Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny during his concert at The Sphere in Las Vegas. The frontman got the crowd to chant Navalny’s name as a memorial to the dissident’s struggle against the Russian establishment.
In a long preamble to a cover rendition of Crowded House’s Don’t Dream It’s Over, Bono spoke of the struggle for freedom and the importance of standing up for it. His remarks on Navalny start at the 2:35 mark in the video above.
“Next week it’ll be two years since Putin invaded and tried to destroy the hard-won freedoms” of the Ukrainian people, Bono said. “Next, it’ll be Poland, next it’ll be Lithuania, East Germany; who knows where this man will or won’t go. To these people, freedom is not just a word in a song. For...

"Having a disco in the middle of a war is the only thing that kept us going." AMC Theatres has revealed an official trailer for an outstanding documentary film titled Kiss the Future, from filmmaker Nenad Cicin-Sain. This premiered at the Berlinale 2023 but didn't make much of an impact there (I was one of the only ones to see it). Thankfully AMC has stepped up and is giving it a proper nationwide release in AMC cinemas later in February. Kiss the Future celebrates the underground art & music scene that thrived during the siege of Sarajevo. The biggest band in the world, U2, lead by Bono, paid attention and shined a light on the crisis in an effort to support the besieged Sarajevans. The film culminates in a post-war unification concert. A cautionary tale about the rise of nationalism, and an uplifting celebration of the power of the human spirit and...

U2 hit the 2024 Grammys stage Sunday night for what producers called a history-making performance.
The Irish rock group performed “Atomic City” from the Sphere in Las Vegas, marking the first-ever broadcast performance from the new venue. Introducing the band, Grammys host Trevor Noah noted it was the first time that TV cameras had been allowed inside the new venue, located at the Venetian Resort.
The band hit the stage for a lively performance that included flashing, multicolored lights and also made use of the 160,000-square-foot wraparound interior LED display at the Sphere.
After their performance, U2 frontman Bono remotely presented the Grammy for best pop vocal album to Taylor Swift for Midnights. (Swift also took the opportunity to announce her new album.)

While the Grammys are being held at the (unfortunately-named) Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles this year, the show briefly traveled 270 miles away to U2 at the Sphere in Las Vegas where the group performed their 2023 single “Atomic City.”
The pre-taped performance started on the 580,000-foot LED screen on the exterior of the building before zooming in to reveal the band midsong, which is about Vegas itself. “God doesn’t play dice,” Bono sang. “But he likes roulette/The wheel has not stopped spinning yet.”

U2 is making Grammy history again. The Irish rockers will perform at the 2024 Grammy Awards on Sunday, Feb. 4, delivering the first-ever broadcast performance from the Las Vegas Sphere, where the band is currently in residence.
The performance from the new immersive entertainment arena is another major Grammy moment for U2, who are among the most-awarded acts in the awards’ history. Bono, Adam Clayton, The Edge, and Larry Mullen Jr. took home the band’s first trophy in 1988. They’ve since won 22 awards from 46 nominations and have performed live at the ceremony numerous times. AMC Theatres will be the exclusive cinematic home to Kiss the Future, the award-winning documentary about the siege of Sarajevo and how its people and artistic community drew inspiration from the music of U2.
Under a deal between AMC and Fifth Season, select AMC locations will debut the film on February 23 for what is described as a full theatrical run. Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, Christiane Amanpour, and former Pres. Bill Clinton are among those who appear in the film directed by Nenad Cicin-Sain and produced by Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Sarah Anthony. Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, Christiane Amanpour, and former Pres. “Kiss the Future,” a documentary produced by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and featuring Bono and Bill Clinton, is coming to the big screen next month.
The film will receive a theatrical run exclusively at AMC Theatres, starting on Feb. 23, before it lands on Paramount+ at a later date. This marks the theater chain’s latest foray into distribution following the release of “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” and “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé.” However, the two concert docs played on more than just AMC screens.
Directed by Nenad Cicin-Sain, “Kiss the Future” chronicles the 1990s siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian War and focuses on an underground community that used music and art to effect change. Actress Rebel Wilson celebrated her fiancee Ramona Agruma’s milestone 40th birthday in Las Vegas. The couple began sharing a look at their fun-filled trip to Sin City with their followers on their respective Instagram Stories, reports People magazine.
“My surprise birthday weekend has started,” Agruma captioned a picture of herself with Wilson, 43, and a group of their friends outside of a private plane. Wilson danced on the plane in a video on her own Instagram Story, holding what appeared to be a boombox customised with pictures of the couple and a pair of balloons shaped like a four and a zero.
As per People, when they landed in Las Vegas, the couple and their friends took in a U2 concert at Sphere Las Vegas, where they spent time in a suite and received a letter from the band’s frontman, Bono, before the show, as seen on Wilson’s Story.

U2 is set to perform at the upcoming Grammy Awards next week with a broadcast from the Sphere in Las Vegas, the band announced on Friday.
The performance will mark the first broadcast from the high-tech venue, which opened last fall with a U2 residency as the band played their 1991 album Achtung Baby. That residency is still ongoing and will wrap up in March. So far, U2 is the only group to have performed a show at the Sphere, though Phish is slated to become the second group with four...

‘Eno’ Review: A Compelling Portrait of Music Visionary Brian Eno Is Different Each Time You Watch It
Even next to David Bowie, with his alien regalia and mutating persona, it was Brian Eno who always seemed like the supreme spaceman of the pop-music universe. In 1972, when he first came onto the scene as the 24-year-old synthesizer wizard of Roxy Music, he sported a look that was pure glam, except that he somehow appeared even more baroque than the gender-bending rock stars of the time. They were Dionysian pansexual strutters, whereas Eno was his own unique thing: a delicate sci-fi gamine, a geek in thrift-shop drag. He wore light blue eye shadow and pinkish lipstick and jackets with huge shoulder pads that sprouted shiny black feathers, but his hair was thinning on top and long and wispy on the sides, and his pout gave him the look of a passionflower extraterrestrial.
As Eno began to create his solo albums of “ambient music”, he held onto his image as pop’s surreal harlequin eccentric.

Kelly Clarkson is honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with a special performance.
On Monday’s episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, coinciding with MLK Day, the singer performed a cover of U2’s “Pride (In the Name of Love),” the song Bono wrote, in part, about the civil rights leader.
“One man come in the name of love/One man come and go/One man come he to justify/One man to overthrow,” sang Clarkson. “In the name of love/What more in the name of love.

U2 frontman Bono co-wrote a whodunnit film way back in 2000 called "The Million Dollar Hotel," but 23 years later, he has made his return to the world of movies -- and the result is unexpectedly gorgeous.
This past October, Max released a short film called "Peter and the Wolf," a new adaptation of Sergei Prokofiev's symphonic classic which Bono not only wrote, but he also created the artwork on which the film was based. Not bad for a rock star. This story has been adapted for the screen numerous times, but it's never looked as striking as it does here. The broad strokes of the narrative are the same as you might remember, and composer/narrator Gavin Friday's musical riff on the familiar motifs may whisk you back to hearing these tunes in your childhood, but the visuals are what stand out the most here.

In a fascinating example of one classic rock star paying tribute to another, Bono of U2 once wrote an essay about Elvis Presley’s greatness and influence. In that essay, he said watching Elvis’ ’68 Comeback Special when he was a child was an incredible experience. The U2 star would later cite one of the King of Rock’ n’ Roll’s songs as having a huge impact on him.
Bono felt there was something religious about Elvis Presley’s ’68 Comeback Special’
In 2010, Rolling Stone released its list of the 100 greatest artists. Elvis was No. 3 on the list, behind only Bob Dylan and The Beatles. Bono wrote an essay for the list about the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
“I was eight years old when I saw the ’68 Comeback Special — which was probably an advantage,” he wrote. “I hadn’t the critical faculties to divide the different Elvises into different categories or sort through the contradictions.

Shane MacGowan’s funeral was as much of a celebration of his music as it was of the man. In the streets outside of the church, mourners joined in unison to sing some of MacGowan’s most beloved songs with The Pogues. Inside, Nick Cave gave an emotional rendition of “A Rainy Night in Soho,” and Glen Hansard and Lisa O’Neill teamed up for a rousing performance of “Fairytale of New York.”
Fittingly, MacGowan’s band delivered the final performance of the ceremony, as Spider Stacy led The Pogues’ surviving members in a rendition of “The Parting Glass.” It marked the band’s first time playing together since 2014.
MacGowan died on Thursday, November 30th at the age of 65 from what was later revealed to be complications from pneumonia and viral encephalitis. See further tributes to MacGowan from Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, and Bono, and read our very own Jonah Krueger...

The Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan has officially been laid to rest. On Friday, December 8th, fans, friends, and collaborators alike came together to honor the Irish icon’s life and legacy with a moving funeral in Dublin. Outside the St Mary’s of the Rosary Church where the ceremony was held, though, another touching tribute was taking place: mourners took to the streets of Dublin to sing MacGowan’s songs.
As captured in videos posted on social media, fans who had been waiting on the streets to see MacGowan’s funeral procession pass stuck around, which led to an impromptu jam session. Musicians equipped with banjos, harmonicas, and tin whistles led the arrangements, as the chorus of Dubliners sang songs like “Dirty Old Town” and the Pogues Christmas masterpiece, “Fairytale of New York.”

Several more musicians have paid tribute to Shane MacGowan, including Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, Nick Cave, and Bono.
Waits addressed McGowan’s passing in a rare public statement issued with his wife, Kathleen Brennan. “Ah, the blessings of the cursed. Raise a farewell toast for Shane MacGowan, one of rock’s most fiendishly brilliant growlers, snarlers, songwriters, storytellers, and blackguards. Shane was the resident Celt-punk genius of The Pogues, one of the great Irish bards of his or any other era, which is why the world is mourning his death on Thursday. But Shane’s demise has been predicted so many times, over 65 years of hard living, it’s bizarrely shocking that the end has finally come. As Bono plays the Sphere with U2 in Las Vegas this fall, the Irish rock star also has been revealed to be involved with another prominent piece of architecture, this one in L.A.
For months, a huge house — with an even more enormous foundation and elevated driveway — has been rising in the Hollywood Hills, inescapably visible to commuters heading north on Fairfax Avenue.
According to a source, Bono is an investor in the project. Designed by architect Noah Walker and developed by Plus Development Group, the home appears to include a triangular-shaped main house, a guest house and a pool.

The New York Times is planning a major new interview franchise, one that will live across its audio podcast division and within The New York Times Magazine.
The new franchise will be released as a weekly podcast, and will also be published as a Q&a in the Magazine, it will be co-hosted by David Marchese, who writes the Magazine’s “Talk” interview column, and Lulu Garcia-Navarro, the veteran NPR journalist who joined the Times to host its First Person interview series.
The new interview series will launch in 2024, with a name still to be determined, though in a note to staff Thursday, Times audio chief Sam Dolnick, Magazine editor Jake Silverstein and director of audio Paula Szchuman said that it will “build on the success of David’s Talk column, which has been one of the most popular features on our site over the past five years.”
