Exclusive: Universal executive Xavier Albert, who has been Managing Director for France since 2016, is taking on a dual-market role with the studio and will also become Managing Director for Italy. Albert will take over the MD Italy post from Richard Borg who is retiring in July after 30 years with the Universal Pictures International organization.
Universal’s President of International Distribution, Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, made the news official in a note to staff today.
This dual-market role is a first for Upi. Said Kwan Vandenberg, “I believe it positions us well to have a multi-market perspective in these regions as we continue to navigate the evolving industry landscape.” Albert, she said, “is well-placed to take on this new expanded role and effectively lead both regions through the continuing effects of the pandemic and towards a post-pandemic recovery.”
Albert will report to the new Executive Vice President of Emea, a role that...

If you’ve seen a hobbyist board game collection in the last four or five years, chance’s are that you’ll have seen at least one copy of Memoir ’44. This Days of Wonder game is a beautifully produced collection of plastic and cardboard that uses the well-trodden Command & Colours system created by the late Richard Borg. We’ve already reviewed the Command & Colours: Napoleonics game from GMT Games, and whilst the Napoleonic Wars are some of the most interesting for me personally, there’s no denying that Memoir ’44‘s exceptional production makes it a mouthwatering prospect.
Because Memoir ’44 has been out for quite a few years now, we thought that it might be useful to spice things up a bit with the most recent expansion, which is actually a remake of an older one. So, for at least half the plays we’ve undertaken whilst producing this review, we...

No matter how hard I might try, there’s no way that I would be able to list the number of different implementations of Richard Borg’s Commands and Colors to date. We’ve already covered one such iteration in the form of Command and Colors Napoleonics and no doubt there will be others in the future. Under the spotlight today, however, is The Great War from Psc Games. Whilst this game doesn’t take the Commands and Colors name, it shares the system and the designer, as well as numerous other elements.
Synonymous with the Commands and Colors system is the idea of the fog of war. Thematically, the fog of war is the idea that in the heat of battle, orders go astray or are ignored, whilst on other occasions, soldiers become cut off and begin to act without the direct control of their superior officers. Mechanically, this...

As Paolo Sorrentino’s two-part Silvio Berlusconi-themed film nears the end of its run in Italian theaters, Universal Pictures and Indigo Film say they are satisfied with the results of a distribution experiment that saw “Loro 1” and “Loro 2” released within about two weeks of each other.
The two installments, which depict Berlusconi’s raunchy antics while he was prime minister, have between them grossed €6.5 million ($7.6 million) and clocked about 1 million admissions. Universal Italy chief Richard Borg said the result was “in line with Sorrentino’s batting average in Italy,” though for single feature-length films. The combined receipts from both parts come in slightly below Sorrentino’s Oscar winner, “The Great Beauty,” and a bit above his most recent movie, “Youth.”
“Loro” posed a much bigger marketing challenge because of its two installments and its thorny political subject. It also comes at time when the Italian box office is in the doldrums,...

Although I am fortunate enough to have hundreds of childhood memories that I think of with incredible fondness, some have certainly stayed with me more than others. When it came to television in the early 1990’s, access to Sky was very limited and no one had hard drive based Freeview boxes for catch up TV – we had to use video cassette tapes or simply watch live TV.
In my house, this simply meant that I was able to stay up for certain programs as long as I remained quiet and calm whilst making occasional (but not too frequent) observations about the subject matter at hand. Among the programs I was allowed to stay up for were Chris Eubank boxing matches, Fred Dibnah’s chimney demolition program and, when possible, the feature length adaptations of Bernard Cornwell’s Sharpe (starring Sean Bean) on ITV. For those who don’t know it,...
