Pedersen follows his protagonist, who is played by the writer/director, through seedy environments lit by neon hues that visually, and at times thematically, recall the work of Nicolas Winding Refn. Directors Notes caught up with Pedersen as Between the Ocean and the Snow arrives online to talk over his artistic influences, the lengthy process of developing the film and his craft as a filmmaker,...

How does an early-aughts quasi-slacker art star making millions — one who was a big voice, back then, in the hip new academy of derivative artists painting gritty images based on stock ideas about mass culture and appropriation — transition to being just another 35-year-old painter trying to make good work without hype and buzz? The answer shows up in Nate Lowman's new show at Maccarone. In this same gallery, in 2008, Lowman and his fellow art-star buddy Dan Colen created a cheeky self-conscious mash of Warhol, Richard Prince, Cady Noland, and a few other usual suspects, giving us a smashed-up 1971 Jaguar, paintings on beach towels, pictures of crack pipes, and the like. Collectors ate it up. Four years later, Lowman did a huge show for the collector and media mogul Peter Brandt at his Greenwich space that included a zillion paintings of Richard Prince-y pictures of a de...

2011 was one of the best years for film in recent years. There are about 25 films that could have made my top ten list and each film in my top 5 could be my number one. I saw about 100 films this year and I still wish I could have seen more. I feel very comfortable with my top ten and I feel like it was a good representative of the year in film. However I do feel that people looking at this article should go over to Sound On Sight and see all the staff’s individual lists, as well as the honorable mentions that just missed my list. You will find a great collection of films on those lists.

Directed by Sean Durkin
I saw Sean Durkin’s directorial debut in August and knew as soon as the last frame came up that this was the best picture of the year.

Celebrity Couples! Stephanie Seymour, a former Victoria's Secret model and internationally known supermodel who starred in Guns and Roses rock music videos and was once on the cover of Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition, has reportedly gotten back together with her very much estranged paper-tycoon husband Peter Brandt. Photos of them vacationing in St Barts with their children over the Christmas holidays were published today on the Daily Mail. [Dec. 28] The celebrity couple made tabloid headlines earlier this year in what many celebrity news writers say was one of the ugliest celebrity divorce battles to date. Lawsuit allegations of infidelity, drug abuse and wild spending sprees by the Victoria's secret skinny girl were his "grounds" for divorce and custody battle, but it seems her bikini and the chance to frolic in the sun with their kids may have won the cold blooded paper mogul back over.
