A24 released the trailer for “Maxxxine” early Monday, the third part of a genre trilogy from Mia Goth and director Ti West. Whereas “X” focused on a porno shoot in 1979 and “Pearl” took the action way back to 1918 (with Goth mugging with a frozen smile for insane lengths of time), “Maxxxine” is set in Los Angeles during its sleaze nadir of 1985, with Goth’s Maxine Minx ready to make the transition from adult entertainer to horror movie star. Alas, a serial killer (“The Night Stalker”) is on the loose, causing trouble.
Set to “My Obsession” by Animotion and “Self Control” by Laura Branigan, Maxxine and hear blown-out hairstyle zoom around L.A., meeting Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Lily Collins, Halsey, Giancarlo Esposito, and Kevin Bacon along the way.

On Saturday night, in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip, Covid conspiracist filmmaker Mikki Willis debuted the fourth film in his Plandemic series to an audience of about 150 fans and fellow travelers. Then, before he and his cast and crew could get into a planned Q&a session, the audience was told it had about five minutes to clear out of the ballroom venue.
“I did not know that,” Willis said after confirming with event workers the screening space had to be empty by 8 p.m.

Johnny Marr, the former guitarist for the rock band The Smiths, slammed Donald Trump for using one of his band’s songs during his political rallies.
“As Trump is scheduled to take the stage in [Laconia, New Hampshire], the new addition to his pre-rally music is The Smiths,” the X user wrote.
On January 23, another user replied to this post with a clip from a Trump rally in Rapid City, South Dakota.
“You actually hear the Smiths more often than you’d think at 2024 Trump rallies,” the user wrote in her post’s caption.
The Smiths song “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want,” released in 1984, can be heard playing over the loudspeakers.
“Ahh…right…Ok,” Marr wrote on X in response to Kim’s post. “I never in a million years would’ve thought this could come to pass. Consider this s— shut right down right now.”

In the article series Sound and Vision we talk about music videos from notable directors. This week we look at Laura Branigan's Self Control, directed by William Friedkin. Last week director William Friedkin passed away. The luminary behind such classics as The Exorcist, The French Connection, To Live and Die in L.A, Sorcerer, Bug and Killer Joe is an extremely underrated director. But luckily most of the obituaries that were written seemed to focus on what made this sometimes hot-headed enfant terrible an amazing director, even though he wasn't always appreciated when alive. My favorite of the recent write-ups on Friedkins career was this piece by Kyle Turner for GQ, in which the critic focuses on how Friedkin approaches queer masculinity in The Boys in...

When we hop on a Zoom with Bridget Everett and Jeff Hiller to break down Somebody Somewhere‘s sophomore season, of course Episode 5 is high on the agenda, so much so that it catches Everett slightly off guard. “Geez, Nick. Really unpacking things today!” she exclaims.
How can we not talk about Sam and Joel’s biggest rift yet, which spawned feelings of hurt and betrayal between buds. In Sunday’s episode, the resident besties’ friendship experiences its first major bump in the road when Joel finds a new boo (Tim Bagley’s Brad, aka “Sls”) and lies to Sam about it.

Unlikely BFFs Sam and Joel will be back for more laughs (and probably a few tears) in the Season 2 premiere of Somebody Somewhere, which is set to premiere Sunday, April 23 at 10:30/9:30c on HBO.
The second season will “follow Sam (Bridget Everett), a true Kansan on the surface, but beneath it all, is struggling to fit the hometown mold,” reads the official description. “Grappling with loss and acceptance, singing is Sam’s saving grace and leads her on a journey to discover herself and a community of outsiders who don’t fit in but don’t give up,...

Rolling Stone‘s interview series King for a Day features long-form conversations between senior writer Andy Greene and singers who had the difficult job of fronting major rock bands after the departure of an iconic vocalist. Some of them stayed in their bands for years, while others lasted just a few months. In the end, however, they all found out that replacement singers can themselves be replaced. With the names of comedy heavyweights Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd above the title, you’d probably expect Apple TV+’s The Shrink Next Door to be a silly laugh riot. But fair warning: It is not.
The episode running times are actually a clue: The premiere is just 35 minutes, like a comedy, but later episodes stretch out to the 50-minute range as it ventures further into dramatic territory. Angel Olsen has released a cover of Billy Idol’s 1984 ballad “Eyes Without a Face.”
Produced with Adam McDaniel, the cover takes a straightforward approach to the song, placing Olsen’s filtered voice against synths and bright guitar. “Eyes without a face, eyes without a face/Got no human grace, your eyes without a face,” she sings.
The song will be featured on Olsen’s upcoming Aisles EP, out this Friday, August 20th. The project sees her departing from her usual folk and country-influenced songwriting in favor of Eighties covers.

Angel Olsen continues turning back the clock with her take on Men Without Hats’ “Safety Dance,” off her upcoming Eighties covers LP Aisles.
Similar to her rendition of Laura Branigan’s “Gloria,” “Safety Dance” showcases Olsen’s haunted, alluring vocals. Gone are the original’s throbbing synthesizers perfect for the dance floor — Olsen’s version is meant for sulking at home.

Music supervisor Iain Cooke found himself immersed in two different eras over the past year in helping craft the pop landscape of TV projects. He focused on one year for just-released AppleTV+ doc “1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything. But the bold miniseries “It’s a Sin,” with its frank depiction of AIDS ripping through the day-to-day lives of a tight-knit group of young London pals in the ’80s, proved a specific challenge.
“We were trying hard to preserve the integrity of this immensely personal story that [creator] Russell T. Update, with landing President Donald Trump exited the White House this morning on a red carpet, boarding Marine One to Joint Base Andrews where he took Air Force One to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, his final use of the presidential aircraft permitted only because he bucked tradition by leaving town before the inauguration of the incoming president.
After a 21-gun salute and “Hail To the Chief” blared through loudspeakers at Joint Base Andrews, Trump greeted a small crowd of invited guests including his children, their spouses, staffers Mark Meadows and Stephen Miller, among others, then gave a short speech in which he listed what he considers his administration’s achievements.
He ended his address with, “So have a good life, we’ll see you soon.” (Air Force One landed at Palm Beach International Airport at 10:54 a.m. Et.)

Thursday’s Call Me Kat is short on laughs, but not on karaoke. Or diarrhea jokes!
In the Miranda remake’s second episode, Sheila sets Kat up on a blind date with Brandon, a man she just met at the horse track. But he’s not just any man — he’s the track announcer, which tickles Kat’s fancy. Ahead of their date, Kat attempts to keep their text chain sweet and flirtatious, so she tells Brandon she’ll be there even if she still has diarrhea. [Editor’s note: She doesn’t have diarrhea.]

The sounds of ‘Gloria’ rang out in Boston tonight, as the St. Louis Blues beat the Boston Bruins to capture the franchise’s first National Hockey League Championship.
Ryan O’Reilly scored for the fourth straight game and rookie Jordan Binnington stopped 32 shots in the game 7 final Wednesday night. The Blues capped an incredible run to the title, going from last place on New Year’s morning to win 30 of their final 49 regular-season games.
Ironically, the Blues won the title on the site of their last Stanley Cup finals appearance. O’Reilly won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Mvp of the postseason.
The song Gloria by Laura Branigan was adopted by the Blues in January, and became its rallying point.

Sebastián Lelio has transported his drama Gloria to the Us with Gloria Bell, the latest in a long line of film-makers taking a second stab at earlier work
From an executive’s perspective, Sebastián Lelio’s new film Gloria Bell is the platonic ideal of a remake. While not strictly a shot-for-shot remounting of the Chilean director’s 2013 film more simply titled Gloria, he sticks to the script, often literally. Same tale of a middle-aged woman finding her groove, then love, and then herself. Same needle-drop of Laura Branigan’s disco lifesaver Gloria to soundtrack our gal shaking it all off during an electric dance sequence. Same cathartic climax in a vengeful hail of paintballs.

Picking up a ticket to Friday night’s world premiere of “Gloria Bell” at the Toronto International Film Festival, I ran into director Sebastian Lelio, who is responsible for both the 2013 Chilean film “Gloria” and the new English-language version of the story.

In fact, he’s wrong. You can love “Gloria” and still think that “Gloria Bell” is an admirable reimagining that stands on its own while paying tribute to the original.

Darren Criss took home the statue for outstanding performance by a leading actor in a miniseries or television movie at Sunday night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards for his role in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.
The recently engaged Criss, who played serial killer Andrew Cunanan, used his acceptance speech to reflect on playing the man who murdered the legendary fashion designer.
“I find it appropriate that this statuette is kind of choosing between which masks to use,” Criss, 31, said at the Schine Auditorium. “The character that I played, Andrew Cunanan, unfortunately used masks to destroy things.

Sebastián Lelio’s “Gloria Bell” is the second film this year to end with the Laura Branigan song “Gloria” — the kind of high-energy empowerment anthem that recasts its leading lady in a different light — the other being Netflix’s recent Gloria Allred docu “Seeing Allred.” Speaking of recasting leading ladies, it also happens to be the second of Lelio’s films to close with that song, although there’s a perfectly good explanation for that: “Gloria Bell” is a nearly scene-for-scene remake of the “A Fantastic Woman” director’s 2013 single-woman drama, this time in English and featuring Julianne Moore in the role that earned Paulina García the Berlin Film Festival’s best actress prize.

A sold-out crowd at the Largo at the Coronet in Los Angeles got a treat when singer/songwriter Darren Criss’ performance of Laura Branigan’s 1982 hit pop song, “Gloria.” Pounding the keys of an old-fashioned upright piano, the former “Glee” star belted out the first half of the song in Italian to honor both “Gloria’s” songwriter Umberto Tozzi as well as the late 20th-century Italian fashion designer, Gianni Versace.

Everyone liked The Inbetweeners, right? Yes, the show had many cringe-worthy, repetitive and outright stupid moments but offered a fair, if heightened take on the burden of adolescence.
Damon Beesley, who co-wrote the series alongside Iain Morris, now branches away from the playground and brings us a slightly darker and sassier story with travelling double-glazing salesman Vincent (Ed Westwick) heading the show. The BBC2 comedy White Gold starts as it means to go on. It’s slick, smart and silly – there is fun to be had here that’s for sure.
It’s Essex, 1983 and here we meet cocksure Vincent, our charismatic and terribly arrogant narrator that gets his claws in from the get go. This obnoxious man is the epitome of a classic salesman; giving us handy tips and breaking the forth wall just to tell us exactly how amazing he is at his job and...

It’s been a decade since we lost Laura Branigan (she died in her sleep of a cerebral aneurysm), but her music will live forever, and those 80′s hits still hold up fabulously decades later.
Today would have been her 57th birthday, so let’s pay tribute to one of the most passionate vocalists in pop music history. These 20 songs represent her greatest hits, should-have-been hits, and unforgettable album cuts. It’s the Essential Laura Branigan.

Cher. What more needs to be said?
She’s the icon of icons, and her list of accomplishments would take forever to list. So on her 68th birthday, let’s pick the best of the best of her immense music catalog. For the purposes of this post, let’s keep it to Cher as a solo artist, and remember …
After The Nuclear Holocaust, The Only Things That Will Remain Are Cockroaches … And This List.
20. Carousel Man
Year: 1973
Album: Half Breed
Chart Peak: N/A
When the album Half Breed came out in 1973, it represented a bit of a comeback after two previous chart disappointments, thanks to the #1 title song (which we’ll be seeing later), which makes it curious why the second and final single “Carousel Man” was only released as a promo to radio DJ’s, and therefore failed to chart on the Hot 100. It remains memorable thanks to that bizarre merry-go-round hook.

On this week’s Hump Day with Adam Lambert, Adam rules the Glee universe again, and Tweets a … cryptic message.
Adam has really helped revitalize Glee this season, and I hope when the show permanently moves to NYC, they’ll save him a place. This week’s episode bodes well, as he was actually part of the roommate drama, and had some nice scenes with Santana (Naya Rivera). And yes, I did let out a Squee! when Santana responded to Elliot with this:
Santana: “You need money? Maybe Auntie Snicks can help you out with that” #Glee
— therealSnicks (@therealSnicks) March 5, 2014
Adam was part of the two best musical numbers of the night. He teamed up with Rachel (Lea Michele) for a cover of Heart‘s classic “Barracuda.” This is another song tailor-made for Adam, and he crushed it, even if Lea seemed a little out of her comfort zone. But,...

Gloria
Written by Sebastián Lelio and Gonzalo Maza
Directed by Sebastián Lelio
Chile and Spain, 2013
The advantage that the new film Gloria has is its uniqueness. At one moment, the title character winds up face to face with a striking white peacock, a creature as rare as she. Though a number of actresses continue to work in Hollywood after reaching the age of 50, not many can claim to have an impressive filmography from that point onwards. (Not everyone can be Meryl Streep.) For any movie, from the Us or abroad, to put an older woman in the spotlight and to surround her with an intentionally no-frills story and world is extremely hard to find nowadays. The story told in Gloria is not heavily plotted, nor is it full of shocking, heart-wrenching twists; its charm is that it’s content to be a low-key, intelligent character study.

Wait, that’s not an actual show? Back at the beginning of July in the daily Briefs, I started the Official snicks Top 100 Lost Hits of The 80's, spotlighting the 100 greatest minor hits of that decade. The songs you don't hear on any 80's nostalgia show. Songs that missed the top ten, or top twenty ... or top forty, and over the last five months I hope some of these forgotten gems may have rung a long dormant bell, or for younger readers, provided a pop music history lesson.

"How Can I Help You Say Goodbye," 1. "Cry Wolf". Just another heads up that tomorrow is a holiday in the U.S., and we'll be taking the day off, except for a Meme (Ed is back!), and a Dool Liveblog. Have a safe and fun July 4th,...
