After Monk ended its run on USA in 2009, creator Andy Breckman never stopped taking notes and coming up with movie ideas for Tony Shalhoub’s alter-ego. But nothing ever quite worked out, recalls Breckman on a panel at Deadline’s Contenders Television — that is, until the pandemic “nudged things along for us.”
That’s when Shalhoub and his wife Brooke Adams made a four-minute film that depicted Monk during the lockdown, which helped to get the ball rolling for Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie. The flick, which dropped in December on Peacock, follows the San Francisco-based detective with obsessive-compulsive disorder returning to solve one last, very personal case involving his beloved stepdaughter Molly.
“At first it sounded kind of risky,” Shalhoub said. “We wanted to raise the stakes, we did not just want to come back with episode 126. We wanted this to be more special. We wanted...

Fans of bingeable mystery shows are in for a treat: all episodes of Monk are now available to stream on Netflix! The USA Network original series centered around Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub), a former investigator for the San Francisco Police Department whose wife’s death exacerbates his Ocd, along with his multiple phobias. However, his keen attention to detail makes him a valuable private detective consultant for the force, and he’s called in to help solve unconventional cases. The show won eight Emmy Awards and was notable as one of the early representations of a person with Ocd as the protagonist of a series.
In addition to its appearance on Netflix, the show received a movie on Peacock in December 2023. It’s not often that a writer gets to go back and re-imagine what he might have done differently if he were writing a show for a modern audience,...

Adrian Monk is back with Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie.
The TV movie, now streaming on Peacock, reunites the cast and creative team behind the former USA series Monk. And making the 90-minute revival felt like a homecoming for star Tony Shalhoub — who reprises his role as the crime-solving detective with obsessive-compulsive disorder — since they filmed in Toronto.
“This is going to sound insane, but we shot the first season in Toronto,” Shalhoub recently told The Hollywood Reporter, speaking 14 years after Monk wrapped an eight-season run for USA Network. The series, which ran from 2002-09, was set in San Francisco. The original pilot, however, was mostly shot in Vancouver, and all seasons after the first were made mainly in Los Angeles.

As it turns out, the two-part finale of the USA Network series Monk — titled “Mr. Monk and the End” — was not the end of the story. Tony Shalhoub’s phobia-prone police consultant is returning to TV for Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie. In the TV movie, which starts streaming on Peacock on Friday, December 8, Adrian Monk reemerges to solve a very personal case involving stepdaughter Molly (Caitlin McGee) as she prepares for her wedding. “We’re so delighted to have made a movie version of Monk, and we are thrilled that every one of our stars were so enthusiastic about coming back,” creator Andy Breckman, executive producer David Hoberman, and director Randy Zisk said in a statement. “But in coming back, we wanted to do a film that was worthy of our legacy. Plot: Monk returns to solve one last, very personal case involving his beloved stepdaughter Molly, a journalist preparing for her wedding.
Review: Running for eight years on USA, Monk held the title of the most-watched scripted series in cable history until the debut of The Walking Dead. Wrapping up in 2009, Adrian Monk returned briefly in a Covid-19 short showing the Ocd detective coping during the lockdown. Now, fourteen years after the series finale, Monk returns in his first full-length mystery, Mr. Monk’s Last Case. Reuniting the four main stars and a couple of key supporting players, Mr. Monk’s Last Case follows the detective getting back into the groove as he investigates a murder that hits very close to home. Setting up potential future standalone mystery films led by Tony Shalhoub, this is a decent story that plays more like an extended episode of the series rather than a fully realized movie.

At the height of the pandemic lockdown, fans of USA’s 2002–09 hit Monk asked series creator Andy Breckman how his lovable and germaphobic private homicide investigator Adrian Monk would cope during Covid. Breckman responded with a four-minute featurette. The clip reunited the show’s star, multiple Emmy winner Tony Shalhoub, with Monk’s posse: his assistant Natalie (Traylor Howard) and cops Randy Disher (Jason Gray-Stanford) and Leland Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine). Peacock loved it, and 14 years after the final episode, the much-missed character returns in Breckman and executive producer David Hoberman’s original film, Monk’s Last Case. (Credit: Steve Wilkie/Peacock ) Why last? “In the movie, Monk has a pretty serious existential crisis,” says Breckman. “We wanted to make clear that the stakes were as high as they could be for the character.” Greatly depressed during the pandemic and obsessively missing his late wife Trudy, he hid in his house,...

Peacock has unveiled the official trailer for Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie.
Featuring Tony Shalhoub reprising the titular role, Mr. Monk’s Last Case will follow the famed detective as he returns for “one last, very personal case,” involving his soon-to-be-married stepdaughter, Molly.
The new trailer opens with a classic moment of endearingly-awkward Monk-ness, as he attempts to be humble after receiving a compliment for his prolific mystery-solving record by saying “I couldn’t have done it alone.” Then, after a few seconds, his commitment to the truth wins out, and he makes the correction: “I could have, but it would’ve taken longer.”
From there, the trailer shows how Monk has adapted to overcome the challenges of the past few years, including the Covid-19 pandemic, which surely caused much distress to the germ-avoiding detective. Watch the trailer below.

Acclaimed mystery-comedy series "Monk," starring Tony Shalhoub as the world's most brilliant, yet neurotic, detective is getting a movie follow-up. "Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie" will be distributed by Peacock.
The original "Monk" ran for eight seasons, between 2002 to 2009, on USA Network. A riff on Sherlock Holmes set in modern-day San Francisco, the lead character Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) is a detective afflicted with obsessive-compulsive disorder. This makes him brilliant at his job — he catches details and remembers things no one else does — but also socially awkward. Monk retired from the San Francisco police after the murder of his beloved wife Trudy (Melora Hardin), the one case he never solved. The series follows him coming out of retirement as he tries to solve Trudy's murder — and handles plenty of other investigations along the way.
This movie is set to be a true reunion, too. Shalhoub will be returning...

Exclusive: America’s longest-serving death row inmate, Tommy Zeigler, and his fight for exoneration after nearly 50 years behind bars on a murder conviction, are getting the documentary treatment courtesy of award-winning directors David Van Taylor (A Perfect Candidate) and Marlon Johnson (River City Drumbeat).
Producers on the film, Blood and Judgment (w/t), include Andy Breckman — the four-time Emmy nominee known for creating the hit USA Network comedy series, Monk — and Ken Druckerman and Banks Tarver from Left/Right, a North Road company (The New York Times Presents: Framing Britney Spears).
Blood and Judgment asks whether Zeigler is a criminal mastermind, or the victim of an ingenious frame-up. Its story is thrust into motion on Christmas Eve 1975, as a multiple homicide unfolds in a locked furniture store outside of Orlando, Florida. Amid the chaotic, bloody crime scene — four bodies, eight guns, 28 bullets — a young detective soon settles on a surprising suspect.

Photo: ‘Monk’ ‘Monk’ - Perfect Comedy Crime Show After the first few notes followed by the raspy voice of Randy Newman, fans know it’s time to watch ‘Monk’. Premiering in 2002 and lasting an impressive eight seasons, ‘Monk’ dominated network TV. Created by Andy Breckman, Tony Shalhoub stars as Monk, a quirky germaphobe detective who solves cases by seeing things that no one else can. In each episode, the private detective is called on the scene when the police are absolutely stumped. Whether it be an untied shoelace or a crooked remote, Monk can see the details that help unfold the murder. Though it’s never too easy for him and his phobias and Ocd get in the way of his everyday life, his trusty assistant helps him with the things that most don’t need help with. The episodes are packed with comedy and Shalhoub is what makes this show so phenomenal.

Exclusive: CBS is taking another shot at adapting the German police procedural dramedy Einstein, this time with major changes to the original concept.
The 2017 German series was a police procedural dramedy about the unknown great-great-grandson of Albert Einstein, a theoretical physics professor, who helps the police in solving murder cases.
The CBS take, written/executive produced by Insatiable creator Lauren Gussis and executive produced by American Gothic creator Corinne Brinkerhoff, centers on a roguish, out-of-the-box-thinking physics professor who happens to be the secret, illegitimate great-granddaughter of Albert Einstein. She begrudgingly partners with a Boston homicide detective not only to help solve the most puzzling of crimes, but also to address the problems ever-present inside the institution of policing itself.
In addition to switching the gender of the Einstein great-grandchild title character, the adaptation also provides 2020 perspective on policing, which has come under major scrutiny following the death of George Floyd.
