“American Horror Story” creator Ryan Murphy and frequent “AHS” star Sarah Paulson reunited back in 2020 for Netflix’s “Ratched,” an 8-episode series telling the origin story of iconic One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest villain Nurse Mildred Ratched. Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria was a mix of confident and casual on Jan. 31 as she led a very network TV-like presentation to explain why Netflix is nothing like a traditional TV network.
“No entertainment company has tried to program with this ambition — for this many tastes, cultures and languages. Ever,” Bajaria told a few dozen entertainment reporters who gathered Wednesday at the streamer’s Tudum Theater in Hollywood for a TV and film preview event dubbed “Next on Netflix 2024.” She cited the sheer scale of the company’s 260 million worldwide subscriber base as something that can’t be compared to past network TV dynasties.
“We can’t define ourselves narrowly, even though many of you would always like us to. But we can’t. We have to think much more broadly about who’s watching and what they want,” Bajaria said. “The biggest mistakes I see creative...

Glee alums Kevin McHale and Jenna Ushkowitz have revealed how the cast’s “bratty” behavior resulted in show co-creator Ryan Murphy refusing to come to set after the third season. Before he was known as the prolific producer-writer-director behind American Horror Story, Pose, American Crime Story, 9-1-1, Dahmer, and more, Murphy found one of his first major successes with Glee, the musical comedy-drama he co-created with Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan that aired for six seasons on Fox between 2009 and 2015. However, the show was often the center of controversy and behind-the-scenes drama between its cast and crew. Things are said to have gotten so bad that Murphy walked out after a particularly tense shoot during the making of Season 3 – and didn’t return. McHale and Ushkowitz detailed what happened on a recent episode of their Glee-based podcast series, And That’s What You Really Missed. The pair, who played Artie Abrams and Tina Cohen-Chang,...

Deadline reports that the upcoming season “will tell the story of the real-life brothers who were convicted in 1996 for the murders of their parents, José and Mary Louise ‘Kitty’ Menéndez. Although the siblings eventually confessed to parricide, they have long sustained that the reason for their actions was due to physical, emotional and sexual abuse.”...

Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny will play José and Kitty Menendez, the parents of Lyle and Erik. The brothers’ 1989 killing of their parents sparked a media firestorm, and Lyle and Erik were eventually convicted of murder.
The anthology series will be Bardem’s first major role in an American TV series. Sevigny has worked with Murphy several times in the past, appearing in two seasons of American Horror Story and the forthcoming Feud: Capote vs. the Swans at FX.

Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny have joined “Monster” Season 2 at Netflix, Variety has learned.
The two A-listers join previously announced stars Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez in the upcoming season of the anthology series, which will focus on the Menéndez brothers. The season is officially titled “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story” and is slated to debut later in 2024.
Erik (Koch) and Lyle Menéndez (Chavez) were convicted of the murders of their parents, José (Bardem) and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menéndez (Sevigny), in 1996. Authorities argued the brothers committed the murders to inherit their father’s fortune, while the brothers maintained that they killed their parents after years of mental and physical abuse.
“Monster” was co-created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. Both serve as executive producers along with Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, David McMillan, Louise Shore, and Carl Franklin. The first season focused on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.

So, in reconfiguring the Goop founder’s longtime Brentwood pad for a family of six, Falchuk’s home office became a bit of an afterthought.

In spite of the fact that “American Crime Story” won the Best Limited Series Emmy twice, its third iteration (“Impeachment”) missed out on a nomination last year, and two other Ryan Murphy productions (“American Horror Story” and “Feud”) have failed in their attempts to conquer the category. Naturally, the vast majority of Gold Derby’s thousands of Emmy predictors expect Murphy’s “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” to falter in this year’s race and are instead backing “Beef,” which, like its strongest challenger, would follow “The Queen’s Gambit” (2021) as the second Netflix series to achieve this top honor.
Also included in the current Best Limited Series lineup are “Daisy Jones & the Six” (Prime Video) and “Fleishman is in Trouble” (FX), both of which were adapted from 2019 novels of the same titles. In the final slot is “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” which joins continuing dramas “The Mandalorian” (2020-2021) and “Andor...

A version of this story about “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama and Limited Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
There’s a somber reason Niecy Nash-Betts is happy about her fourth Primetime Emmy nomination. “I feel like it brings more attention to Glenda Cleveland and her story (that was) going unheard, overlooked and underserved,” Nash-Betts said of her character in “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” the first season of a planned Netflix anthology series, “Monster,” from Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan.
Though “Dahmer” is ostensibly focused on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, it
seeks to give a face, voice and story to his victims. One of the indirect victims was
Cleveland, Dahmer’s neighbor, who repeatedly called the police after suspecting that the Milwaukee killer was harming people in his apartment. Despite her pleas, Cleveland was ignored by police.

Although he’s been a frequent collaborator of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, director Paris Barclay says his gut instinct, when asked to helm episodes of Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, was to give it a pass. “I was alive when this was all happening in real time. I was a gay, Black man of that age. I wasn’t in Milwaukee, but nevertheless, it was scarring. He was one of those serial killers that really affected me,” Barclay tells THR. “I didn’t want to do anything that would glorify or add more ignominy to Jeffrey Dahmer. I didn’t think there was anything there for me.”
As Murphy explained to Barclay that their intent was to shift the focus away from the killer himself and onto the lives of the victims, the director reconsidered his position. “Ryan told me the story of Tony Hughes, who was this gay,...

The ten episode series Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (read our review Here) was such a huge success for the Netflix streaming service last fall, Netflix ordered two more seasons of the show from creators Ian Brennan and American Horror Story co-creator Ryan Murphy. Last month, it was announced that the second season will be titled Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story – and Deadline reports that Nicholas Alexander Chavez (General Hospital) and Cooper Koch (They/Them) have been cast in the lead roles, with Chavez playing Lyle and Koch playing Erik.
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story will tell the story of the brothers, who were convicted in 1996 for the murders of their parents. José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez were fatally shot in their Beverly Hills home in 1989. Erik and Lyle were not the initial suspects in the killings, though police began to investigate their involvement in the months after.

With the same number of nominees last year, they were “Dopesick” (“The People vs. Purdue Pharma” by Danny Strong), “The Dropout” (“I’m in a Hurry” by Elizabeth Meriwether), “Maid” (“Snaps” by Molly Smith Metzler), “Station Eleven” (“Unbroken Circle” by Patrick Somerville), “Impeachment: American Crime Story” (“Man Handled” by Sarah Burgess), and the winner “The White Lotus” (Mike White).
What makes last year interesting is that half of the shows in the category were not nominated for Best Limited Series, something that perhaps could repeat itself to a degree with this year’s potential nominees. Another thing of note is that almost all of the top contenders this year that had the option to submit multiple episodes only went with one, preventing any possibility of vote-splitting.

Super producer Ryan Murphy, who has produced and written iconic projects such as Glee, American Horror Story and Scream Queens, is leaving Netflix for Disney to reconcile with his old friend, Dana Walden. Murphy worked with Walden when he was under contract with 20th Century Fox TV when she helmed the division.
Walden, a good friend of Murphy’s, is now the chairwoman of Disney Entertainment.
Murphy’s agreement with Netflix doesn’t finish until the end of June and when it does, he will be able to work again with his longtime partner, FX’s John Landgraf, who serves as the chairman of the organization, which is also part-owned by Disney.
ABC, another Disney network, paid for ownership of 9-1-1, a drama that Murphy developed for Fox in 2018.
The choice to exit Netflix for Disney comes five years after he joined the streamer in a blockbuster $300 million agreement.

Ryan Murphy will depart Netflix at the end of his five-year, nine-figure overall deal, and is set to make a new home at Disney.
The producer behind hits including Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, 911 and American Horror Story is expecting to reunite with Dana Walden, who worked closely with Murphy when she headed what was then 20th Century Fox TV and he had a deal there. Walden, who is also one Murphy’s closest friends and confidants, is now co-chairman of Disney Entertainment. The new, not yet completed pact — Murphy’s Netflix deal doesn’t expire until the end of the month, after all — will bring Murphy back in-house with FX’s John Landgraf, with whom he has long had a close creative relationship, as well. Sources say the move has been in the works since well before the Writers Guild of America went on strike in May.
Disney declined to comment.
