When Saturday Night Live hired Shane Gillis as a featured player in 2019 only to let him go days later, it was big news. So much so that the show apparently considered referencing it on air.
Appearing on The Joe Rogan Experience Podcast this week, comedian Neal Brennan revealed a meta sketch he wrote for the show that week.
“The week Shane got fired—whatever, unhired—I thought of a sketch, and I was gonna be in New York.” Brennan, who co-created and co-wrote Chappelle’s Show with Dave Chappelle, explained. “I have sort of like an open-door policy at SNL where I could just write, because I wrote there with Dave. So I had a sketch idea…”
He went on to explain the premise: “It was a couple… They’re in bed, and they’re like, ‘So any, um, STDs you want to tell me about?’ And they’re like,...

I’m not sure if there’s a rulebook regarding how to watch a stand-up, but the first rule should always be: don’t go into it with any kind of presumption. When I read the description of the latest Neal Brennan comedy special on Netflix, titled Crazy Good, I didn’t expect it to be that hilarious. What I mean here is that I couldn’t imagine a stand-up that focuses on mental health, cryptocurrency, and the psychopathic tendencies of celebrities turning out to be “haha funny”—that too without being problematic. But Brennan has clearly managed to achieve that here. In Crazy Good, Brennan does get into everything that’s mentioned in the description provided by Netflix, and while he acknowledges the seriousness of so many of these matters, he also succeeds at getting some genuine laughter out of it. And it’s not an easy thing to do,...

Neal Brennan begins his forthcoming Netflix special with a disclaimer of sorts.
“If you’re watching this because you saw my other Netflix specials and I talked about having depression and you wanted to support a fellow traveler, I have some terrible news,” he says at the top of his new hour, “I feel pretty great.”
Then, rather than linger on his own mental health journey, which he explored in previous critically acclaimed specials 3 Mics and Blocks, he spends a healthy portion of Crazy Good joking about the perks or upside of “bad mental health.” Doing anything else with his latest set, which will premiere on Netflix April 9, felt disingenuous to Brennan, who broke out as the co-creator of Chappelle’s Show in the early ’00s and has segued, more recently, from comic whisperer to comic star.

A former writer for Saturday Night Live has posted tweets mocking Matthew Perry’s death.
Podcaster Kevin Brennan tweeted a story covering the former Friends star’s passing and wrote, “Drowned In A Hot Tub. Hahahaha.”
The 63-year-old comedian — who wrote for just one season of SNL in 1999 — further said about the beloved actor who starred in 10 seasons of one of the most successful TV shows of all time: “I didn’t mock it. I just thought it was funny. But I do love it when junkies die.” He then explained drowning in a hot tub is funny “because it’s not very deep.” When roundly slammed for his comments, he asked, “Am I trending yet?”
Brennan is the brother of Chappelle’s Show co-creator Neal Brennan, whom he reportedly often trashes on his podcast while similarly putting down other successful comedians.

For the first time ever, e.l.f. Cosmetics, the affordable makeup brand found in retailers like Cvs, Target, and Ulta Beauty, is releasing a TV commercial during the 2023 Super Bowl on Sunday. They’ve tapped The White Lotus’ Jennifer Coolidge to star in the 30-second campaign, and Mike White, creator of the hit HBO comedy-drama series, to write it.
“Jennifer is a fan of e.l.f. She loves Power Grip Primer, and she is especially drawn to our cruelty-free stance,” Kory Marchisotto, e.l.f. Beauty’s chief marketing officer, told The Hollywood Reporter in an emailed statement. “Her authenticity, humor, beauty and e.l.f.ing energy, coupled with Mike White’s brilliant writing, brought the campaign to life in a way that no one else could do. After conquering the awards circuit this year, Jennifer Coolidge is now taking on the Super Bowl.
The Emmy-winning star of HBO’s “The White Lotus” collaborated with show creator Mike White on a 30-second spot for e.l.f. Cosmetics, a TikTok obsession and Gen-z beauty supplier. It will air during Sunday’s showdown between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs.
The brand’s “eyes.lips.face.sticky” campaign sees Coolidge discover the effectiveness of e.l.f.’s Power Grip Primer, a pre-makeup application known for grasping beauty products (and anything else poor Coolidge touches as she applies it). Watch the hilarious spot above.
The ad is the brand’s first ever to air during the Super Bowl, and as co-written by White and Shadow, e.l.f.’s longtime creative marketing and communications agency.

Trevor Noah ended his “Daily” task thinking more than laughing.
The host of Comedy Central’s flagship program bid a low-key farewell to a small studio audience that gathered Thursday for the final broadcast of “The Daily Show” of his tenure. An early-evening taping held in front of fans, crew and current and former network executives featured appearances by many of the show’s correspondents, including Jordan Klepper, Roy Wood Jr. and Desi Lydic, as well as Noah’s longtime friend, comedian Neal Brennan.
Absent were the celebrity visits and flashy fanfare that typically mark transitions in TV’s late-night arena.
“My friends are my favorite guests,” Noah explained.
The evening included a segment for each correspondent as well as one final series of person-on- the-street interviews by Klepper, who asked New York City passersby what they made of Noah’s departure.

Chris Rock has a bone to pick with Civil Rights movies. During a recent appearance on Neal Brennan’s “How I Feel” podcast (via Shadow and Act), the “Fargo” actor sounded off on films that deal with Civil Rights struggles and said the issue with the majority of these films is that they “make racism look very fixable.” Rock said the stories his mother used to tell him about the Civil Rights Movement era make it clear these films should be “dirtier,” if they want to be accurate.
“I hate all Civil Rights movies,” Rock said. “Don’t get me wrong, I applaud the effort and they should exist. The problem is they only show the back of the bus and the lunch counter. They actually make racism look very fixable. They don’t get into how dysfunctional the relationships were in the ’40s and ’50s, white men would just...

Imagine, for a moment, that a stand-up comic is just like a superhero. On stage, he’s a master of the universe, armored and impervious, slinging jokes like lightning bolts. He defeats all adversaries, from hecklers to the potential indifference of the audience; laughter, of course, is his way of killing. If that’s what a stand-up comic is, then “The Opening Act,” Steve Byrne’s wryly likable shoestring indie comedy about a young man trying to make it in the world of stand-up, might be described as a stand-up-comedy origin story.
Will Chu, played by Jimmy O. Yang of “Silicon Valley,” is an aspiring comic who’s been doing open-mic nights in his small hometown of Steubenville, Ohio. He’s got some funny material. He grew up watching stand-up on TV with his immigrant father (they bonded over it like sports), and he knows the form, works on his bits,...

There is a very good mix of theatrical, digital, VOD and hybrid releases this weekend starting with The Kid Detective from Stage 6 Films starring Adam Brody and Sophie Nélisse.
Written and directed by Evan Morgan, the movie is about exactly what the title suggests: a kid detective. Brody plays a once-celebrated kid detective who is now 31 and isn’t exactly bathing in fame. However, he continues to solve the same trivial mysteries as he navigates his hangovers and wades in puddles of self-pity. All of this changes when a naïve client brings him his first “adult” case in which he attempts to find out who brutally murdered her boyfriend. The film also stars Sarah Sutherland, Tzi Ma, Wendy Crewson, Jonathan Whittaker and Peter MacNeill.

There’s a moment in the fourth episode of Showtime’s “The Comedy Store” where Neal Brennan is interviewing Jay Leno about what the former “Tonight Show” host thinks about the current use of podcasts as vehicles for stand-up comedians to both hone their craft and build name recognition. And while Leno’s extended “podcasts are masturbation to stand-up’s carnal knowledge” metaphor is a simultaneous eye-roller/groaner, there’s an energy in this interaction missing from almost every other talking head interview in the series — and that’s likely because it’s the only time director Mike Binder is not conducting the interview.
Binder, whose bonafides include writing and directing “The Upside of Anger” and “Reign Over Me,” got his start at The Comedy Store during its heyday in the 1970s, where he became part of owner Mitzi Shore’s inaugural crop of regulars alongside giants of stand-up Robin Williams,...

Production in the Golden State may still be in a state of stasis due to the coronavirus pandemic. Yet the money pipeline is flowing strong, as the more than $40 million in tax credits that California allocated today made very clear.
With just days left on Program 2.0 of the state’s $330 million annual film and television tax incentive scheme left before Program 3.0 kicks in with the dawn of the new fiscal year on July 1, 12 features got the nod this time round. The lucky dozen not only divvied up the dough, but also represented perhaps the greatest variation in allocations since then Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law a significant expansion of the program back in 2014.
Including a likely straight to VOD sequel to 1998’s Dave Chappelle and Neal Brennan’s stoner cult fave Half Baked, plus Disney/Fox’s Florida 1992-set Lady of the House drama, here is the complete list...

Could Al Capone’s famed syphilitic dementia have all been an act? It would’ve been a brilliant ploy. Consider that mob boss Vincent Gigante walked the streets of the West Village in a bathrobe to put on a public performance of a mentally broken man. He kept up the act in court, during affidavits, tests, interviews and under more forceful questioning. But all the while, Gigante ruled the Genovese crime family from 1981 to 2005. The trailer for Capone promises to deliver an “untold final chapter” of his life by suggesting the original Scarface perfected a similar dog and pony show, and then claims it can back it up by saying the movie is based on true events.
“A ruthless businessman and bootlegger who ruled Chicago with an iron fist, Al ‘Fonzo’ Capone (Tom Hardy) was the most infamous and feared gangster of American lore,” according to the official synopsis. “At...

Director Josh Trank on Wednesday released the first look at Tom Hardy as the legendary gangster Al Capone in his film “Capone,” showing Hardy as an old man suffering from dementia but still dangerous and full of mystery.
Trank’s been working on the project under the name “Fonzo” for some time, but on Wednesday, he revealed the film would hit streaming early on May 12 under a new name.
“Capone” shows Hardy in his late 40s after spending 10 years in prison, when he’s developed dementia and is haunted by his violent past. But he’s still the target of investigations, with one agent suspecting he may still be hiding something.
