The first part of IFFR’s 50th edition, which ran Feb. 1-7, focused on the main Tiger, Big Screen and Ammodo Tiger Short competitions as well as the Limelight sidebar, a preview of upcoming arthouse releases. From February to June, the fest continued to stream films from its rich history as part of the IFFR Unleashed: 50/50 program.
A total 139 features, short and mid-length films are screening in the Harbour, Bright Future, Cinema Regained, Classics and Short and Mid-Length Film sections. Harbour is the festival’s newest and largest program.
“The port is the backbone of the city of Rotterdam and in the same way Harbour is the backbone of the festival itself,” says festival director Vanja Kaludjercic.

I'm drawn to Straub-Huillet’s usage of direct quotations rather than adapting or interpreting original material for a film. To me this is, among other things, a very straightforward and concrete way of highlighting that people are much less original than they are often assumed to be. (I think that Danièle Huillet once said this, but she was certainly not the first one.) It might be worth being reminded of this, especially today, in a time where we see and seek constant innovation and renewal everywhere while nothing really changes at the core. But for Straub-Huillet, quotation is also about something else. Every film of theirs is a documentation of their loving relationship to a preexisting text, artwork, or artist. The films are more genuinely about the work of the other and less about the couple's so-called vision. Quotation, to Straub-Huillet, is an act of respect, one...

Donald CriedFor those unable or unwilling, like yours (un)truly, to sift through the boundless vapidity of what is vaguely termed “American Independent Cinema,” Locarno serves as a somewhat reliable filter, letting through the tight Swiss borders the hottest offerings from across the Atlantic. Like the country that produces it, American cinema possesses an indefatigable vitality and a fearless belief of the future with no room or even time for self-congratulatory nostalgia. Firmly rooted in the present, the American films Locarno showcased over the last few years re/present probably the most damning evidence of what remains relevant or even necessary about contemporary cinema.Donald Cried, Kris Avedisian's debut feature presented in the Cineasti del Presente section, is nothing short of brilliant in that it literally illuminates the murkiest aspects of a corrupted yet most intense friendship. It is around this noblest bond, increasingly subjected to the fluctuations of...

The programme for the 66th Locarno Film Festival has been unveiled and was compiled with “diversity” in mind, according to new artistic director Carlo Chatrian.
“The only categorical imperative was to work with diversity, take it to extremes,” said Chatrian.
“For years, the festival’s policy has been to position its mission of discovery within a programme that includes mainstream cinema, but only of the kind that, despite its high production values, is not just pure spectacle, the kind that doesn’t see entertainment and intelligence as incompatible.”
As previously announced, the Swiss festival will open at the open-air Piazza Grande on August 7 with the international premiere of 2 Guns, the action film starring Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington as cops, directed by Baltasar Kormakur (The Deep).

I’ll just fess up: Despite the fact that it’s in its 41st year, the International Film Festival Rotterdam is something I’ve kind of never heard about until today. (Let’s blame it on a slip in my geography skills.) This ignorance on my part notwithstanding, taking a look at their initial lineup for this year — when the event runs from January 25th to February 5th — has left me mightily impressed.
The biggest world premieres come from two directors on opposite ends of at least a few spectrum: Takashi Miike and James Franco. (Discounting the fact that they’ve both depicted amputations onscreen, in one way or the other.) The former is debuting his adaptation of the popular Nintendo DS game, Ace Attorney, while the latter will be exhibiting Francophrenia (Or: Don’t Kill Me, I Know Where the Baby Is). A movie based on a kid’s...

Well, hello, 2012 — and a new issue of the multilingual film journal La Furia Umana. At its center are two substantial packages, one featuring Brazilian filmmaker Júlio Bressane (image above), the other, more or less introduced by Jonathan Rosenbaum, on Joe Dante. Interviews, essays by and about, the works. Also, from David Phelps, "Visions of the Blind. Raúl Ruiz: A Users Guide and Pedagogy." Ken Jacobs on Dziga Vertov. The Celluloid Liberation Front on "Science-Fictional Realism in the Virtual Age." Claudio Mazzatenta on Nicholas Ray's We Can't Go Home Again (1973). Steve Mayhew on John Ford and Harry Carey's Universal years (1917 - 1921). And Noel Lawrence: "The complicated friendship of Terry Southern of Jx Williams goes way back, back to the salt-and-pepper pompadour, the black briefcase, and beyond…"
