BAFTA-nominated I Hate Suzie star Leila Farzad and Broadchurch’s Andrew Buchan are to lead BBC One’s Better, the latest drama from prolific Chernobyl producer Sister.
Farzad, who was BAFTA-nominated for her role in Billie Piper and Lucy Prebble’s dramedy, will play Di Lou Slack, a quick-witted policewoman whose success lies on a foundation of deceit and corruption.
Buchan, who is also penning Sister drama Passenger for ITV, plays Col McHugh, a charming businessman and property developer who heads a citywide drug trafficking gang.
The show from Humans scribes Jonathan Brackley and Sam Vincent tells of the pair’s bond set in a world where they have created their own version of “right” and “wrong.”
Farzad called it a “a brilliant fresh take on the morality tale,” adding: “I am excited to have the opportunity to play Lou Slack, the vehicle through which we explore the multivalent layers of good and bad.

The dynamics of life and death surround Showtime’s new series “The End.” Set in Australia, this dark comedy explores how a mother and daughter relate to ever-changing circumstances. Creator and writer Samantha Strauss offers a balanced look at the realities of personal growth, while also delving into what it means to be a part of the modern familial unit. Director Jessica M. Thompson comes to ‘End’ as a relative novice in the TV industry; her previous experience extends to the well-received feature “The Light of the Moon.” Jonathan Brough joins as director for four episodes and expands his filmography from series such as “Rosehaven.”

Brian Walsh.
Belying fears that Foxtel would cut back on local commissions following the Federal Government’s media reforms, the pay TV platform expects to have three Australian dramas in production next year.
Two are intended to be returning series: a fresh take on the crime genre to replace Wentworth, the other a family drama to fill the gap left by A Place to Call Home.
Brian Walsh, who heads the Foxtel Originals division that was created in a restructure in August orchestrated by group CEO Patrick Delany, today reaffirmed the company’s commitment to drama, factual and lifestyle programming after the government halved the obligation on pay drama channels to invest 10 per cent of their annual revenues on local content.
“The new quota system will provide some confidence to the production sector but by no means does it indicate that that is the limit to which we are investing in local production,...

The partnership will develop projects for Strauss to write and produce in both Australia and overseas, with Strauss to work closely with See-Saw producer and EP Rachel Gardner on the slate.
“We want to tell stories that are a bit itchy and a lot addictive; that dig below the scab and broken skin and investigate all sorts of wounds that haven’t healed properly,” said Strauss.
“Let them bleed, weep and breathe. The opportunity to tell more of these stories, with the brilliantly supportive and talented See-Saw family, fills my writer heart with glee.”

Todd Abbott.
Installed as ABC head of comedy in July, Todd Abbott will start evaluating the development materials of the comedy projects that received support under the $5 million Fresh Start Fund this week – and next week he hopes to greenlight development on several projects that he’s already been evaluating.
That’s the good news for Australian producers and creators – tempered by the fact that the broadcaster’s comedy slate for 2021 is fully committed. So the projects that will advance from now on will premiere in 2022.
Given the ABC’s budget constraints, Abbott tells If: “Everyone has had to tighten their belts. My task is to maintain the comedy department’s output and to keep the Wednesday comedy night thriving – and then I’ll try to work out how to do hostile takeovers of the other nights. Filming has got under way in Adelaide on Australian comedy-drama series “Aftertaste.” It is the first major production to shoot in the state of South Australia since the coronavirus shut-down, and comes as a state of disaster and a nighttime curfew are declared in neighboring Victoria state, which includes Melbourne.
The six-part Closer Productions show will shoot for five weeks in Adelaide and the Adelaide Hills. It makes use of 110 cast and crew members, including 10 from out of state, and 200 extras.
To get into production, the show used a risk assessment tool developed by consultancy firm Deloitte and overseen by the South Australia Film Corporation. “The Risk Assessment Tool has been instrumental in navigating the path back to production, and providing the framework and structure needed to get this production up and running within Covid-Safe guidelines,” said CEO of the South Australian Film Corporation Kate Croser.

Brian Walsh.
For Brian Walsh, 2020 shapes as the most competitive year for the broadcast and streaming sector since the inception of television in Australia in 1956.
There will be casualties among the new entrants but ultimately the viewers will be the winners, predicts Walsh, Foxtel’s executive director of TV, one of the few who were there when the pay TV company launched in 1995.
“The landscape will be the most competitive since the start of television as we see the new players consolidate their positions for consumers in Australia,” he says. “Like all competition, it will bring out the best in everyone. When you have robust competition the winner will be the customer.”
While he expects Disney+ to draw a sizable audience here, particularly among young families, he predicts: “There won’t be an endless array of Ott services that will have the same success as Netflix, Disney and Amazon. There...

Dispelling the notion that Foxtel has cut back on its commitment to Australian drama, the pay TV platform is in the hunt for shows that would not appear anywhere else on Australian screens and for a returning series to fill the gap left by A Place to Call Home.

Dispelling the notion that Foxtel has cut back on its commitment to Australian drama, the pay TV platform is in the hunt for shows that would not appear anywhere else on Australian screens and for a returning series to fill the gap left by A Place to Call Home.

Sophie Hawkshaw (L) and Zoe Terakes in ‘Ellie & Abbie (& Ellie’s Dead Aunt)’.
Since Zoe Terakes came out, the proudly gay actor has not been offered any screen roles as straight characters – but that has not hindered the 19-year-old’s flourishing career.
There is no such discrimination in the theatre world and Zoe is currently performing in Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge at the Ensemble Theatre, directed by Iain Sinclair.
She made her stage debut as Catherine, a college student who is romantically involved with Italian immigrant Rodolpho, in the Old Fitz Theatre production of the play while she was studying for the Hsc.
Miller’s play has been a talisman for her as she appeared in the Melbourne Theatre Company production, also directed by Sinclair, earlier this year.

Samantha Strauss.
Samantha Strauss met with executives at Fox Searchlight during what she describes as a “water bottle” tour of Los Angeles in January last year.
That visit has paid off handsomely as the Dance Academy creator has been commissioned to script a movie about Joan Quigley, the San Francisco astrologer who became a confidante to First Lady Nancy Reagan and President Ronald Reagan.
John Madden will direct President’s Astrologer, produced by Damian Jones for Fox Searchlight, one of the Fox units which will soon be folded into the Walt Disney Co. as part of a $US71.3 billion deal with Rupert Murdoch’s company.
Fox Searchlight execs had read a sample of Strauss’ work on The End, See-Saw Films’ 10-part drama co-commissioned by Foxtel and Sky UK. They thought the tone was perfect for Madden’s film, which will relate how Nancy Reagan secretly hired Quigley as the White House...

Claudia Karvan in 'Newton's Law'..
How did you get involved in Newton.s Law?.
I think they originally wrote it for Miriam Margolyes. She was originally devised as an old, fat Jewish woman (laughs). I've never worked with them before so I don't know how I came on their radar. I was a big admirer of the film Mallboy.that Fiona [Eagger] produced a long time ago. It's one of my favourite Australian films. It really packs a punch..
I've never heard of it.
It's really worth checking out. I loved it. And then, obviously, [I.m] a big fan of SeaChange and totally appreciate the extraordinary phenomena that is Miss Fisher, and what successful producers they are. They just approached me, I read it, we had a few conversations and then it was all happening. I really wanted to play a character who was emotionally intelligent and had authority and...
