A sprawling gun show — billed as “14 Acres of Guns & Gear” — was the main attraction at the the National Rifle Association’s annual convention in Houston this past weekend. And even in the aftermath of the carnage in nearby Uvalde, where 19 children and two adults were massacred by a teenager with an assault weapon, NRA members poured in by the thousands to gawk at the gun industry’s latest, sexiest, deadliest wares.

Hurricane Florence has yet to swirl over North Carolina, but the nation’s TV-news operations are already setting up to meet her.
“It’s a large area, and we really want to be able to cover a big part of it,” says Wendy Fisher, vice president of newsgathering for ABC News, which has already dispatched multiple crews of anchors, reporters, camera operations and technicians to various points in the southeastern U.S. “Most hurricanes “hit the beach and then they peter out” she adds. “This one, there are warnings that it will linger. We kind of have to cover several different stories,” ranging from the storm itself to the consequences of its aftermath.
All the big news networks have plans to cover Hurricane Florence, which meteorologists predict will slam into the U.S. east coast later this week. It is now a category 4 hurricane and has sustained winds of 130 miles per hour.

Though little Gabriella Coane is less than a month old, she has already experienced two historic events.
Gabriella was born on August 20, just a week before Hurricane Harvey pummeled cities around Texas, leading to the evacuation and displacement of tens of thousands of residents. Parents Bruce and Jessica Coane took shelter in their Houston apartment with their newborn as the hurricane flooded large parts of the city.
“To see all the suffering going on was quite awful, everyone’s possessions were on the curbs,” Bruce, who volunteered at the George R. Brown Convention Center during the storm, tells People. “Then...

On Thursday, Sasha Von Troetsch, a Houston dog groomer, rounded up 50 volunteers to bathe and pamper the almost 100 dogs displaced by Harvey who were seeking shelter with thousands of human evacuees at Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center.
“While we were there, someone came up to me and said, ‘Stanley, an evacuee, wants to help,’ ” Von Troetsch tells People. “I went over to talk to him and he said, ‘I’m a groomer, I’ve been grooming for over 29 years.’ ”
Von Troetsch welcomed the help for the dogs, some of whom had terrible matting from their watery evacuation travails.

Wow what a weekend we all had at Comicpalooza 2011! I want to personally give a huge thank you to John Simons, Jody Pitts and the entire Comicpalooza team for everything!
I was honored to be a guest at Comicpalooza and represent GeekTyrant, the revived green ooze that is Alien Bee, Crocaloctopus and some of the movie projects I'm invloved in. I had a blast hosting the "How to be a Horror/Sci-fi blogger" panel with Marc Bernardin from Syfy, Blastr and EW. Our people in the audience were great and had some cool questions and I even had a little swag for them! Surprise!
So much going on at the George R. Brown Convention Center, wow that thing is huge! The largest convention center I've been in so far and I've made my rounds too! We stayed at the Hilton Americas which is connected to the Grb. Big shout out to the Hilton team,...

During Memorial Day weekend (May 27-29, 2011), Comicpalooza held its 4th annual multi-genre convention at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, TX. I attended the first two days of this three-day convention. First of all, this was my first big convention in Texas and the layout of the convention center was massive. The whole convention took place on the 3rd level of this massive convention center.
The highlights of the convention for me were the opportunities to interact with comic creators, comic fans, and celebrities. I spent a short amount of time on Friday observing the entire Con floor and chatting with various artists and writers in Artist Alley. I also checked out a few things in the Dealers Room. Before leaving for the day, I sat in on panel with comic writer Chris Roberson (I-Zombie), Fred Van Lente (Marvel Zombies), and Brian Denham (Zombie Fairy Tales) on a panel titled Comics & Zombies.

Comicpalooza, the largest comic-con/pop culture event in Texas, is taking place this weekend — but that hasn't stopped the organizers from adding awesome new guests and events to the already-stuffed schedule.

For all you Harry Potter devotees, actor Devon Murray has also been added to the guest list. Apparently, Murray is known as Seamus Finnegan in the hallowed halls of Hogwarts. (I've never actually seen a Harry Potter flick, so I have to take their word on this one.)

Quick — what did you do last year on Memorial Day? Can't remember, right? Maybe a picnic or barbecue with grandma? Yawn. So, what are you planning to do this year? If you're not sure yet, I have a cool suggestion...one that doesn't involve heat stroke and overcooked hot dogs.
If you want to do something unforgettable, and if you are a fan of all things genre (and we know you are because, hello, you're surfing FanGirlTastic), you might want to check out an event in Texas known as Comicpalooza.
What exactly is a Comicpalooza anyway? I posed that very question to Comicpalooza's founder and chairman, John Simons, who said, "[Comicpalooza is] a comic con, horror con, sci-fi con, anime con, steampunk con and gaming con all rolled into one.
