Whisper campaigns have always been an effective strategy among rival Oscar strategists, hinting at the issues that can quietly dog a movie throughout its campaign. (Remember? “They got history wrong in ‘Lincoln.’ Or: “‘Zero Dark Thirty’ justifies torture.”) Only now that we have the meme, the marketers don’t have to whisper — or even say anything at all. Social media has created a nation of casual activists who are swift to recognize the off notes, and denounce them in the Twittersphere. Of course, an irate public doesn’t necessarily matter; it’s the voters who count. And while the Academy is working to make its membership younger and more diverse — a population with greater sensitivity toward cultural issues than some of their elder peers — they’re an influence, not the majority. Here’s a look at the issues that are dogging some of the season’s Oscar titles, and how we might see them resolve.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Charming based-on-fact British costume dramedy gently snarks about power and propriety but cuts a lot deeper when it comes to bigotry and bootlicking. I’m “biast” (pro): love Judi Dench, mostly love Stephen Frears’s films
I’m “biast” (con): we’re still telling stories about this dead queen?
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
The ribbing writes itself: Hey, they finally made the sequel to 1997’s Mrs. Brown! You know, the movie in which Judi Dench as Queen Victoria develops a close platonic friendship — or maybe even a romance — with royal groundskeeper John Brown in the early years of her widowhood, in the 1860s. It was a scandal! And now here’s Victoria & Abdul, which opens 20 years later and stars Judi Dench (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel...

“Now listen up, Mr. Pink. There’s two ways we can do this job. My way… or the highway!”
Reservoir Dogs will screen at Webster University’s Moore Auditorium Saturday September 16th at 7:30pm
Quentin Tarantino’s feature-length directorial debut, Reservoir Dogs (1992) depicts the events before and after a botched diamond heist. The film features Harvey Keitel (Mr. White), Michael Madsen (Mr. Blonde), Steve Buscemi (Mr. Pink), Chris Penn (Nice Guy Eddie Cabot), Lawrence Tierney (Joe Cabot), Tim Roth (Mr. Orange), and Tarantino (Mr. Brown). Tarantino displays many themes that have become his style and influenced a generation of filmmakers: choreographed violent crime, pop culture references, nonlinear storytelling, dialogue punctuated with profanity.
Somewhere along the way, opinions on Quentin Tarantino have become divided – some still loving his work, others calling it bloated and unnecessarily inflated. However, those are two criticisms that cannot be levelled at his first film. It...

They say that every dog has its day, and today is the 25th anniversary of Quentin Tarantino’s American crime thriller, Reservoir Dogs!
After competing in the dog-eat-dog world of film festival screenings, Reservoir Dogs made its theatrical debut in France on September 2, 1992. Pulling triple duty as writer, actor, and director, the independent heist flick was Tarantino’s first feature-length film and instantly cemented his place at the top of Hollywood’s dogpile, paving the way for future films like Pulp Fiction (1994) and Jackie Brown (1997).
With a budget of $1.2M and a domestic box office gross of over $2.8M, the independent underdog has since earned its bloody, cult classic status and is often referred to as “the greatest independent film ever made.”

When you think of Quentin Tarantino, classic films like “Reservoir Dogs,” “Pulp Fiction,” and “Django Unchained” certainly come to mind. But what about the critically reviled “Saturday Night Live” sketch adaptation “It’s Pat”? Or the Michael Bay Alcatraz action movie “The Rock”? Tarantino’s fingerprints have been all over the movies ever since his breakout debut in 1992, and some of his projects are way more bizarre than others.

What and extraordinary hour of television! Well, technically it was an hour and eight minutes.
We were promised a landmark event, unlike anything we have experienced before, and Underground Season 2 Episode 6 did not disappoint.
There are not many words I can say to properly break down the installment and do it justice. It really is one of those events you have to experience for yourself.
Harriet has been the dark horse of the season. She commands your full and undivided attention every second she's onscreen, but she hasn't occupied as much of the screen as expected.
Apparently, that was because the show was building up to an entire episode dedicated to Harriet Tubman. It was everything one could possibly hope for and more.
It is an incredible risk having an entire hour of a season dedicated to a new character. It's even riskier when you think about how the hour played out.

Animals live among us, often with us, some despite our interference in their habitats. They’re independent organisms that are often subject to our rules. This is especially true when it comes to television.
How we use and portray animals on TV perhaps reveals more about ourselves than the qualities they contain. Are they brought in to round out a nuclear TV family, or do they have greater narrative significance? Do they have personalities or are they plot devices that advance the story, and then forgotten? Do characters regard them with any real feeling?

IndieWire examined how the animal kingdom fared on our screens this year from a storytelling point of view, and determined which portrayals were the most significant. Because of this narrative aspect, we focused on two types: fictional animals whose characters were created for the purpose of the show, and non-speaking animals.

Worries about the look of the main character turned to smiles and a healthy run at the box office for one of last year’s most pleasant surprises. So it makes sense that, when starting to think about a second Paddington, the producers might want co-writer/director Paul King to return, and Deadline brings word that he is now aboard. King, who helped develop the story of the original with writer Hamish McColl, is going to be even more closely involved from the start for this one, working alongside regular collaborator Simon Farnaby to create the sequel’s narrative. We'd expect Farnaby, who showed up to memorable effect in Paddington, to also play some role this time.Little else is known about the film: we don’t know what our furry hero will be up to this time, but it’s a fair bet that his human family, including Hugh Bonneville’s Mr. Brown,...

The “Don’t Wake Me Up” singer will make $50,000 per concert and if things go well, there’s no telling what will come of the arrangement.
Mr. Brown has a long history of fun and shenanigans at Drai’s over the years- back in May he fell off the stage while dancing during his 26th birthday party. Thankfully he wasn’t hurt and everyone had a good laugh.

In HitFix's new feature "Waxing Episodic," we reflect on an episode of television we'll never forget. NBC's "The Office" debuted 10 years ago this week, arriving with the unenviable challenge of having to live up to the standard of one of the best-received comedies of recent times, but went on to outstrip the British original. I don't even know if that's a controversial statement anymore. The British "Office" is great and, in terms of comedic efficiency, NBC's version didn't come close. But Ricky Gervais' series was built for 12 episodes and a Christmas special and never had to worry about longevity, never had to wonder how sustainable its circumstances and its characters were. NBC's version took that world and made it renewable. Whether you think the American "Office" was great (or even good) for all 200-ish of its episodes, it was certainly very good or great for more than 13 episodes. I...
