Bill Bryson bestseller A Short History of Nearly Everything is being reimagined as an animated TV series by former The Simpsons showrunner Josh Weinstein and Paddington scribe Jason Hazeley, with Richard Ayoade narrating.
Altitude and Brouhaha Entertainment are forging the series version of a book that has sold 15 million copies worldwide and been translated into 50 languages, with a view to turning it into a long-running entertainment franchise.
Published two decades ago, the book sees celebrated writer Bryson take on popular science by tackling issues such as the size of the universe and the development of the human race, and setting them out in layman’s terms. A large part of the book is devoted to relating humorous stories about the scientists behind the research and their sometimes eccentric behaviours. Narrated by Ayoade, the animation will tell these stories spanning centuries and continents, time and space, and the abstract and the real,...

It’s that time of year again. While some directors annually share their favorite films of the year, Steven Soderbergh lists everything he consumed, media-wise. For 2023––another year in which he not only Magic Mike’s Last Dance Review: Steven Soderbergh and Channing Tatum Take a Familiar, Gentle Bow”>released a new film, but dropped two TV series (Full Circle and Command Z“>Command Z) and shot another film (the Sundance-bound Presence)––he still got plenty of watching in.

“I’m deeply cracked from a combination of Talmud and LSD,” says Natasha Lyonne, flicking a cigarette in her hand from the couch of her Los Angeles home, where she’s been chatting by Zoom for over an hour. She is attempting to explain the underpinnings of her show Russian Doll, a metaphysical mindfuck she writes, produces, and stars in, whose second season recently dropped on Netflix. Based on a character Lyonne had long imagined — essentially a hard-partying, alternate-reality version of herself named Nadia — the series explores the nature of life and death,...

Considering Bill Bryson is my favourite author and I love travel and hiking, I really haven’t watched enough movies about hiking journeys. Are there even that many of them? I’m not entirely sure to be honest but when I read about The Dark Divide, which is based on a true story, I knew I had to check it out.

Exclusive: Hacksaw Ridge backer Argent Pictures, Nine Days producer Mandalay Pictures and Book Club writer-director Bill Holderman are teaming up on a feature adaptation of WWII tale The Last Ridge about the 10th Mountain Division, a troop of U.S. expats-turned-soldiers who helped turn the tide against the Nazis in Europe.
Holderman will adapt McKay Jenkins’ non-fiction book which charts a remarkable true story. When World War II broke out in Europe, the American army had no specialized division of mountain soldiers. That changed after an amateur skier named Charles Minot “Minnie” Dole convinced the U.S. Army to let him recruit an extraordinary assortment of expats, wealthy ski bums, mountaineers, and thrill-seekers and form them into a band of Alpine soldiers.
The group included the Sierra Club’s David Brower, Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman, and Aspen Skiing Corporation founder Friedl Pfeifer.
The men endured nearly three years of gruelling training in the Colorado Rockies and forged 10th Mountain Division which finally faced combat in the winter of 1945 in Italy’s Apennine Mountains, against the seemingly unbreakable German fortifications north of the Gothic Line. There, they planned and executed one of the most daring nighttime mountain attacks in U.S. military history, smashing a linchpin of the German army’s lines.
Argent’s Jill Ahrens, Ryan Ahrens and Ben Renzo, and Mandalay’s Jason Michael Berman will produce the film with Holderman and Erin Simms of their banner Apartment Story. Executive producers are Argent partners Drew Brees, Tony Parker, Michael Finley, and Derrick Brooks with co-executive producers Eric Bromberg and Stephen Michael.
Argent’s Ryan Ahrens said, “Very few details about the U.S. Army’s elite 10th Mountain Division have been introduced to the generations that followed WWII. This story is long overdue, so we’re happy to be entrusted with the source material to tell a cinematic story depicting the courage, sacrifice and heroism of this group of men.”
Mandalay’s Jason Michael Berman added, “I have had a very strong desire and passion to help tell the story of the heroes that made up the 10th Mountain Division ever since I first learned about them and their bravery while a teenager who often visited Colorado with my family growing up. Bill Holderman and I have been talking about this incredible true story since the first day we met at the Sundance Intsitute Labs back in 2014. It is so exciting to collaborate with my close friends and partners at Argent, Jill, Ryan and Ben, to bring this project to life with Bill and Erin.”
Holderman, well known for hit 2018 comedy Book Club, which took more than $100M, and Bill Bryson story A Walk In The Woods, commented, “This is one of the great untold stories in American history and I’m thrilled to be partnering with Jason, Jill, Ryan, Ben and of course, my partner in crime, Erin, to bring this harrowing and triumphant tale to the masses.”
He quipped, “Following on the heels of Book Club, I feel like I’m pigeon-holing myself but those are worries for another day…”
American Made and Hacksaw Ridge backer Argent recently finished shooting Good Joe Bell with Mark Wahlberg and Connie Britton. Recent Mandalay films include Edson Oda’s Sundance hit Nine Days, which was picked up by Sony Classics, and upcoming Netflix original The Last Days Of American Crime with Edgar Ramirez.
The project marks the fourth collaboration between Argent and Mandalay Pictures in the last year following Netflix’s Uncorked, Fox Sports boxing story They Fight and upcoming horror-comedy Bride And Doom.
Holderman is represented by Wme and Paul Hastings.

Fish out of water stories are as common as they are compelling. People relate to stories of not fitting in, but still trying to get on with their lives anyway.
At first glance, “Shaun the Sheep Movie” and “A Walk in the Woods” seem like movies that have nothing in common. One’s the latest stop-motion animated offering from Aardman, the other is a comedy starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte. It’s an easy to make assumption that’s mostly correct.
“Shaun the Sheep Movie” stars, of course, the titular character, the clever little sheep who starred in his own show for several seasons. Shaun made his film debut in the short “A Close Shave”, and has evolved into a much more intelligent character from his beginnings.
The movie starts with innocent enough intent. Shaun wants a day where he doesn’t have to deal with the same old monotonous routine,...

Threading more or less the same path as last year’s Reese Witherspoon starring Wild, A Walk in the Woods, an adaption of travel writer Bill Bryson’s book of the same name, sees Robert Redford step into the shoes of Bryson as he attempts the Appalachian Trail, a 2,200 mile hiking trail that passes through 14 American states, including Georgia, Tennessee, Maryland, and New York. Forced to take a partner by his wife (Emma Thompson), Bryson finds the only taker is his old friend Steven Katz (Nick Nolte), an overweight, recovering alcoholic who looks to be in no shape for psychical exertion of any kind. The pair embark on the endeavour, but as you can expect from two men in their 70’s, they soon find they’ve bitten off more than they can chew. With our two leads the main focus of its 104 minute run time, A Walk in the Woods...

Stripping out most of Bill Bryson’s prose and wit, this adaptation with Redford and Nick Nolte leaves us with a sentimental tale of two old geezers taking a hike
Related: A Walk In The Woods: what’s Nick Nolte doing in a stinker like this?
A Walk in the Woods is based on Bill Bryson’s travel book about attempting to hike the 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail in the Us with an old friend. It strips out most of Bryson’s prose and wit and leaves us with a folksy-sentimental tale about a couple of adorable old geezers tottering through the woods, like Statler and Waldorf without the laughs. At 79 years old, producer-star Robert Redford plays Bill Bryson, who was in his mid-40s when he undertook the hike. The movie’s geriatric themes can therefore be described as semi-intentional, and Redford’s performance is really so stilted it’s...

The ad campaign for Ken Kwapis‘ A Walk in the Woods gives the impression that it’s a geriatric version of last year’s Wild: two geezers hike the Appalachian Trail and discover the True Meaning of Life along the way. And there’s a bit of that, to be sure, but the overall tone is comedic rather than revelatory — Grumpy Old Hikers, if you will. I’m not familiar with the memoir on which the movie is based, but I think comedy was the right approach. It’s a decent entertainment, even if there are a few dropped threads and jokes that don’t quite hit the target.

Not that I worry too much about Redford movies but I do object when he takes down a great actor along with him.

Based on the best-selling novel by Bill Bryson, A Walk in the Woods stars Robert Redford as Bill, a travel writer who has returned to the United States after spending a number of years in Britain. One day he gets the idea to hike all 2,200 miles of the Appalachian Trail, which extends from Georgia to Maine. His wife, however, is not about to let him travel it alone, so Bill calls his old friend Stephen Katz (played by Nick Nolte) to come along for the journey. What starts out as a relaxing trip, however, soon turns into something quite different, as Bill and Stephen find themselves getting into all sorts of trouble.

The three-day Labor Day weekend is traditionally a holiday period that puts the breaks on the box office in the States – summer is officially winding to a close, and studios feel audiences will be out enjoying themselves, so fewer big titles chance a release slot. And indeed, the newcomers didn’t exactly do much business, with a not-so-newcomer surprising everyone by jumping up to take the top spot, as War Room overtook Straight Outta Compton for $9.3 million in its second weekend, according to studio estimates. A Christianity-focused family drama that had been largely lambasted by critics, War Room nevertheless opened strong in second place last week and has now surged to score the top seat, making $24.6 million so far in its brief run. And that’s showing on 1,525 screens, far fewer than Compton’s 3,097. Still, the N.W.A. biopic did well enough in its fourth week of release to earn $8.8 million.

If you think man-crack is the apex of hilarity, “A Walk in the Woods” just might be the movie for you. It’s all right there in the trailers: slapstick, womp-womp one-liners, the premise of old buddies going on an adventure. See some moon or your money back! So it’s surprising when the opening minutes show promise, thanks to an incredibly preserved Robert Redford, who plays accomplished travel writer Bill Bryson. Even more of a surprise is learning that this film is based on a memoir. While you’re viewing the film — and guessing at the next moment of hijinks — you imagine.

"They say the Appalachian Trail is like life: you don't know what's ahead, you don't know what's gonna happen next, but you give it your best shot." And so begins the journey embarked upon by Bill Bryson (Robert Redford) and his long-lost, former friend Stephen Katz (Nick Nolte), both now well into their 70s but looking for adventure -- for very different reasons. Check out this Fandango Movieclips exclusive clip from A Walk in the Woods, the adventure-comedy-drama...

This week, Ken Kwapis' A Walk in the Woods gets released in cinemas, an adaptation of Bill Bryson's popular book. Peter Martin had a lot of fun with the film, and in his review here he praises the (un)easy camaraderie between its two stars Robert Redford and Nick Nolte. A great excuse to have our weekly quiz be about either of those two, as they're both great, and flipping a coin yielded Nick Nolte! In a career spanning over four decades, Nick Nolte has been used as everything: action hero, villain, strong guy, weak guy, moral beacon, and asshole. Results have varied in the past, but just when you expect you've seen the end of him, and you think he'll probably retire into B-films playing...

With a 49 percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, critics are split right down the middle of the road about Robert Redford‘s new film, “A Walk in the Woods,” the big-screen adaptation of Bill Bryson’s best-selling travel memoir. Reviews diverge wildly on the Broad Green Pictures release directed by Ken Kwapis, which made $1.2 million on its opening day Wednesday, and is hiking up towards a $7 million estimate gross for the Labor Day holiday weekend. While some loved the storyline and the fact that both Redford and costar Nick Nolte are returning to the screen together as a writer and.

The lax, lame A Walk in the Woods is a road movie without a road, a journey of self-discovery without discovery, and a tale of friendship without any chemistry. Based on travel writer Bill Bryson’s 1998 best-seller about his attempts to hike the Appalachian Trail in his late 40s, it stars two far older actors whose energies can either be complementary or mismatched: The always understated Robert Redford plays Bryson, and Nick Nolte, one of our most wonderful scenery-chewers, plays Stephen Katz, Bryson’s gruff, shaggy old friend from Iowa who is the only one to answer the writer’s call for a traveling companion. Together, these two men — one an intellectual who is feeling the creeping approach of his own mortality, the other a walking human disaster zone — spend months attempting to make their way up the trail, which runs from Georgia to Maine. That could be the setup...

The big-screen adaptation of Bill Bryson’s bestselling travel memoir “A Walk in the Woods” is off and hiking, having trekked to $1.2 million on its opening day Wednesday. Robert Redford and Nick Nolte star in the comedy about a writer and his pal hiking the 2,000-mile-plus Adirondack Trail, which rolled out in 1,849 theaters in the first wide release for distributor Broad Green Pictures. Relativity EuropaCorp Distribution is also releasing its first film widely this Labor Day weekend, “The Transporter Refueled,” a reboot that sees Ed Skrein subbing in for Jason Statham,...

A Walk in the Woods is a film decades in the making, a passion project of sorts for the film’s lead actor Robert Redford. Based on the acclaimed memoir by Bill Bryson, the film is part travelogue, part male bonding movie, as two friends that disconnected over time bond together again to tackle the 3,500km Appalachian Trail.
Redford’s companion in the film is Nick Nolte, and Cineplex spoke with the two iconic actors, along with the remarkable comedic actor Nick Offerman, during this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
The film is about friendship – did that play into the working relationship between Mr. Nolte and Mr. Redford?
Robert Redford: My relationship with Nick was very much in the film, it was organic, it was genuine. I see him as a friend and a colleague, and so if you saw that in the film, then I guess we succeeded.

The director of the Robert Redford-Nick Nolte comedy A Walk in the Woods learned hands-on during the shoot that Nolte's upper-body strength is as impressive than ever. Woods, which hits theaters on Wed., Sept. 2, centers on writer Bill Bryson (Redford) and estranged pal Stephen Katz's effort to hike the Appalachian Trail. Based on the best-selling 1998 memoir by travel writer Bryson, it also stars Emma Thompson, Mary Steenburgen, Kristen Schall and Nick Offerman. With the "Odd Couple" pairing of Robert Redford and Nick Nolte, director Ken Kwapis ("Big Miracle," "He's Just Not That Into You") has made an unmistakable buddy road picture in "A Walk in the Woods." It's certainly laconic vs. loquacious on the Appalachian Trail: one part existential journey and another part environmental reverie, as told by sardonic travel writer Bill Bryson (Redford) in his memoir, adapted for the screen by Redford's producing partner, Bill Holderman. Of course, it's easy to see the attraction for both Redford and Nolte: "A Walk in the Woods" perfectly plays off their iconic personas. And for Redford it's even more personal, about aging and learning to co-exist with the environment (a marvelous bookend to "Jeremiah Johnson"). But for Kwapis, who's always had a facility for straddling comedy and drama, it was about finding the sweet spot where those two conflicting personalities could best...

With Labor Day less than a week away, it’s not too late to explore the “great outdoors”, at least at your local multiplex. This past Winter, Reese Witherspoon earned an Oscar nomination in the true life tale of a woman, Cheryl Strayed, who recently hiked the long, arduous Pacific Crest Trail all by herself in the drama Wild. Her journey seemed to be a way of exorcising her own personal demons. This new true life nature hike isn’t quite so somber, but it’s equally daunting. Around the time that Reese was hitting the road (cinema-wise), Robert Redford was also going solo, but on an aquatic voyage (which turned into a fight for survival) in All Is Lost. Now he’s on land and on foot at the East Coast near equivalent, the Appalachian Trail. But the Sundance Kid is more than twice Reese’s age. Does he stand a chance there?...

In the altogether pleasant A Walk in the Woods, Robert Redford smiles and cracks wise as he hasn't done on screen for many years. It's a marvelous, if wrinkly, sight to behold. The movie, an adaptation of Bill Bryson's 1998 bestselling memoir, is loose and jocular and lighter than air. Bryson (Redford) is a well-recognized author who decides one day to hike the Appalachian Trail -- a hiking trail in the Eastern United States that runs some 2,000 miles (3,500 kilometers) -- without really knowing why. His wife (Emma Thompson) insists that he not travel alone, and so, after many turn-downs, his old friend Stephen Katz (Nick Nolte) volunteers to accompany him. Katz arrives at Bryson's home in New Hampshire, overweight and out-of-shape. He's a...

And, with those five little words, Catherine Bryson (Emma Thompson) sends husband Bill Bryson (Robert Redford) on an epic Appalachian journey alongside one of his oldest -- but estranged -- friends, Stephen Katz (Nick Nolte), in "A Walk in the Woods." In this exclusive clip, Thompson and Redford -- both Academy Award winners, by the way -- share a tender exchange before Redford sets off on his own, delivering all the feels to anyone who's ever had to say goodbye to a soulmate.
"A Walk in the Woods," an adaptation of Bryson's best-selling memoir of the same name, chronicles the ups and downs of the unlikely duo's well-intended hike along the Appalachian Trail, which starts in Georgia and ends in Maine. That's one hell of a walk. As you can imagine, things do not go as planned. But, then again, nothing in life ever does.

After having two smash hits together — Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid (1968) and The Sting (1973) — Robert Redford and Paul Newman had often talked about reteaming but waited decades to finally find the right property. Redford, with his producer’s hat on, thought he had found it in the 1998 Bill Bryson book A Walk In The Woods, which chronicles the late-in-life hike Bryson took on with a friend named Stephen Katz along the 2200-mile Appalachian Trail. After battling the high seas in 2013’s All is Lost, and threatening all the president’s supermen in last year’s Captain America: Winter Soldier, Robert Redford would seem more than deserving of a little down time. For the prolific actor, producer, and festival head, taking a break meant finally filming passion project A Walk in the Woods, an adaptation of Bill Bryson’s 1998 travelogue memoir. And while a movie about hiking 2,200 miles along the Appalachian Trail sounds anything but restful, A Walk in the Woods proves to be as taxing and eventful as an afternoon nap.
The book provides a presumably loose map for screenwriters Bill Holderman and Michael Arndt (nom de plum Rick Kerb) to follow. The real Bryson trekked through America’s northeast while still in his ‘40s; the Bryson played by Redford is a septuagenarian. Few would argue that the 79-year-old Redford has aged poorly,...

Based on the bestselling memoir by Bill Bryson, A Walk in the Woods seesRobert Redford and Nick Nolte lead an impressive cast, including Emma Thompson, Nick Offerman, Kristen Schall, and Mary Steenburgen, in what best can be described as a comedy version of Reese Witherspoon’s Wild. "We're not even halfway there!" Broad Green Pictures has debuted the trailer (+ poster) for A Walk in the Woods, a comedy starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte as two old friends who catch up for a hike on the Appalachian Trail. Along the way they run into the likes of Kristen Schaal, Emma Thompson, Mary Steenburgen, and Nick Offerman as an Rei employee. As much as this story should result in a charming and amusing adventure, it looks way too slapstick goofy – not in a good way – and utterly bland. This also plays like some sort of mainstream comedy, even though it premiered at Sundance; Ethan wrote a dismal review of it. Now I can see why. You may be curious enough to watch the trailer, but go no further than that. The healthy, prepared Reese Witherspoon was nearly destroyed by a long hike in Wild, so how do two cranky old geezers fare on the Appalachian Trail? We’ll find out in A Walk In The Woods, which has just put its first trailer online. You might think Robert Redford would have an advantage, having proven he can take what Mother Nature can dish out in All Is Lost. But here, he’s channelling comedy and travel writer Bill Bryson, who decided to challenge himself to hike the trail that runs from Georgia to Maine. While he thinks he has a good handle on it, no one wants to come with him, not even his wife (Emma Thompson). But then he does find a willing, if singularly unsuitable travelling companion in his former friend Steven Katz (Nick Nolte), who sees the trip as a way to sneak out of paying some long overdue debts.
