Once reserved for kush lovers to gather and light up, April 20 has become an unofficial national holiday. With the legalization of recreational cannabis in 21 U.S. states and decriminalization in 10, online and brick-and-mortar retailers and brands are toasting 4/20 with deals on hemp-powered products.
And these days, you can’t throw a rock without hitting a celebrity cannabis line: Snoop Dogg, Tommy Chong and Cheech Marin, Willie Nelson (who has a coffee brand), Jay-Z (who launched Monogram in 2020), Seth Rogen (who co-founded Houseplant with writing partner Evan Goldberg), Mike Tyson, Martha Stewart, John Legend (an investor of Plus Products) and DJ Khaled are just a handful of stars who have gotten into the ganja game. (It’s worth noting that Kirsten Bell’s Happy Dance shuttered earlier this year.

Did CinemaCon save the best for (nearly) the last? In terms of the movies on display we’ll have to wait and see, but in terms of pure emotion I would have to guess there wasn’t a dry eye in Caesars Palace’s Colosseum at this morning’s richly nostalgic, proud and perhaps bittersweet presentation from 20th Century Fox that could — if and when the proposed Disney merger is approved — be the last the iconic studio ever does on of these on its own here as one of Hollywood’s storied six majors.
Afterwards in the lobby, it was hard to find a Fox staffer without tears still in their eyes. Yes, there was the usual slate tubthumping, and a few star and filmmaker appearances (though much lighter compared to what the other studios sans Disney have done here in that regard), but this presentation brilliantly masterminded by Fox...

Bruce Dern is at the top of his game in Alexander Payne's road movie about a father and son's quest for riches
When putting together his critically acclaimed neo-noir thriller After Dark, My Sweet, James Foley instructed his casting director to "go find me a Bruce Dern type" for the crucial role of Uncle Bud, a retired cop whose avuncular manner masks an undercurrent of psychosis. For three months, a succession of hopeful players was brought to Foley's attention but all fell short of the mark, none possessing the necessary blend of twinkling intensity and barely repressed craziness. In the end, exasperated, the casting director made a startling suggestion: "Why don't you just get Bruce Dern?"
Having worked with directors such as Alfred Hitchcock, Elia Kazan, Bob Rafelson, Roger Corman and Hal Ashby, Dern had earned himself a reputation in the 1960s and 1970s as a purveyor of wild-eyed rebels,...
