Welcome back, dear readers! We’ve nearly made it through another week and December is (quite literally) just right around the corner. And since the holiday season is pretty much upon us, we’re back with another installment of our annual Holiday Gift Guide. For today, I’m celebrating a handful of books that I have either had the chance to check out this year and fell in love with, or several titles that I’m confident genre fans will love that I just haven’t had a chance to check out yet for myself.
To make things easier, I’ve sorted the books into two categories: non-ficton and fiction. And also, just so everything is on the up-and-up, I want to mention that I did include my own latest book in today’s edition of the Hgg just because the artists featured in this second volume of Monsters, Makeup...

Ever since seeing Creepshow (1982) when it first arrived on video, I’ve been enamored with anthology films; reaching back to Amicus’ ‘60s and ‘70s treasures like Tales from the Crypt (1972) all the way up to Epic Pictures’ Tales of Halloween (2015), omnibuses scratch a very particular itch for this viewer. Falling somewhere in the middle of my terrorline is From a Whisper to a Scream (1987), a proud and nasty addition to the sub-genre. This bugger does not mess around.
Released by Moviestore Entertainment stateside and by Cineplex-Odeon up here in Canada the following year, From a Whisper to a Scream (Aka The Offspring, which is what I knew it as) made back its $ 1.1 million budget plus a few dollars more, and the film received mixed reviews from critics in its limited release. Let’s be honest, Super Mario Bros: The Movie is not a great movie. It’s not even a great video game adaptation. As a movie-loving teen the film was high on my must-see radar, so imagine my disappointment when I eventually saw the film on VHS… However since then I’ve come to appreciate the film for the bizarre Sf-tinged adventure movie that it is, rather than an adaptation of my all-time favourite video game franchise.
A critical and commercial failure on it’s original 1993 release, Super Mario Bros: The Movie has, in the intervening years, become something of a cult classic. So much so that the out-of-print DVD...

Mark Bessenger Hey horror fans. Remember how we've all been complaining about an array of lifeless horror film remakes and bland horror film concepts? So when something comes along that tries to give us something different, something edgy, we should be out there supporting it, right? ....Well Bite Marks starring Windham Beacham, Benjamin Lutz, David Alanson and Stephen Geoffreys, is that film! Bite Marks deals with a truck driver and a gay couple who must fight off a pack of blood thirsty vampires after their truck breaks down in the middle of a lumber yard and it turns out their cargo is a coffin carrying vamps. What makes Bite Marks different is its humor, the way that its characters develop, the merger of horror/comedy/gay indie film, etc. You're probably saying to yourself though "but that's the gay vampire film?". Gay, straight, black, white, low budget, big budget -...
