Ben Platt and Micaela Diamond will star in Parade on Broadway this spring, reprising their leading roles in the Tony-winning musical following a sold-out New York City Center run.
On Tuesday producers announced the Michael Arden-directed production will open at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre for a limited engagement run starting March 16. Previews will begin on Feb. 21 with a final performance slated for Aug. 6.
“Jason Robert Brown’s and Alfred Uhry’s masterpiece, Parade, is one of the most beloved musicals of the past 25 years. “I was in inappropriate rooms, and I was placed in hotel rooms. It is because of the casting director that I was a protected child in this industry. And even to the point of risking their own career, I have a couple of memories of the casting director saying, ‘No, I’m staying,'” Laura Dern said in her speech while accepting the Lynn Stalmaster Award for Career Achievement at the Casting Society of America’s 34th annual Artios Awards held on Thursday at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
Two ceremonies took place on opposite coasts. At Stage 48 in New York, Tina Fey and Jeff Richmond received the Marion Dougherty New York Apple Award. In L.A., festivities were hosted by June Diane Raphael of “Grace and Frankie” and “Black Monday” star Paul Scheer.

While the Oscars have yet to make room for casting directors — a pivotal part of the Best Picture equation — the oversight isn't stopping the Casting Society of America from readying its third decade of picking up the Academy's slack. Csa announced Monday morning that the 30th Annual Artios Awards will honor Academy Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning director Rob Marshall and Emmy Award-winning casting director Ellen Lewis for their individual work in the world of casting. The Broadway Dreams Foundation is holding summer workshops across the country that will give students a chance to hone their musical theater skills in front of casting directors. Craig Burns and Rachel Hoffman of New York-based Telsey + Company are scheduled to be part of the Foundation’s week-long Summer Performing Arts Intensive programs. Both casting directors will be at the Los Angeles and Philadelphia workshops while Hoffman is set to do the Omaha, Neb., event on her own, according to Jake McCoy, a production administrator with the Foundation, which bills itself as the “premier performing arts training program.” “It’s absolutely a possibility for people to get roles out of it,” McCoy told Backstage. “It’s a great networking program. But in this specific week-long program, the goal is training and education.” He noted Ryann Redmond, who starred in the Broadway and touring production of “Bring It On,” is a former student,...

As Mitt Romney pointed out this week in the wake of the J.P. Morgan shortfall, someone’s huge loss is a big gain for someone else. "Priscilla Queen of the Desert" is closing at the Palace Theatre June 24 after 526 performances. But that means the theater is free and, according to reports in the New York Times and elsewhere, the next likely occupant will be the revival of "Annie." Scheduled to open this fall, the title role has been cast (Lilla Crawford) and so have the other orphans, but if the show is a hit, they'll need plenty of additional little girls and adults. The casting director for "Annie" is Pat Goodwin of Telsey + Company. In addition, "Priscilla" is planning a national tour, so there are more potential jobs there, too. Craig Burns, also of Telsey + Company, is the casting director for "Priscilla."Update: On May 21, it was...
