Twenty-seven of Australia’s top cinematographers last night launched a social media campaign aimed at boosting the number of women employed in camera teams and, more broadly, encouraging greater diversity across the screen industry.
Using the hashtag #whoisinyourcrew, the six-week campaign is designed to reach all heads of department as well as directors and producers.
The initiative was conceived by Dop Bonnie Elliott on behalf of the Australian Cinematographers Society’s Diversity Committee, the reconfigured Acs Women’s Advisory Panel.
Appointed to Screen Australia’s Gender Matters task force this year, Elliott has led the way by maintaining gender equity across her own camera teams for the last four years.
“I am keen to empower my fellow cinematographers to help make change in the industry through their hiring practices,” says Elliott, whose recent credits include Stateless, The Furnace, Palm Beach, The Hunting, H is for Happiness and Daina Reid’s upcoming Run Rabbit Run.

Errors Of The Human Body may only be considered a suspenseful thriller, but to me it’s straight horror. Why? I’ll be completely honest with you all – science terrifies me. I understand the need to always keep learning and create even greater understandings about this big, glorious universe we all live on, but at what cost? Do we really need to be creating super hadron colliders which can smash particles at the risk of creating a black hole which could potentially consume our planet? Think about it, if one measly scientist were to calculate a number wrong to the decimal point – boom, goodbye humanity. “Well the good news is, we discovered a new element. The bad news is, we’re all going to die – In The Name Of Science!”

Body Talk: Sheean’s Debut Forgoes Thrills for Moody Drama
Eron Sheean, best known for writing the 2011 Xavier Gens film, The Divide, arrives with his curiously titled Errors of the Human Body, a sort of medical drama thriller that sounds instead like a documentary series on the Discovery channel. At first playing like a treatment by Robin Cook with a mad scientist angle, the film eventually reveals that it has no interest in delivering the thrills or chills that its foreboding first half painstakingly constructs, instead settling for mediocre melodrama.
Geoffrey Burton (Michael Eklund) is a medical researcher that has dedicated his life to finding a cure for Burton’s syndrome, a deadly genetic disease caused by a mutation that claimed the life of his infant son and ruined his idyllic marriage. Taking a job in Dresden, he spends his time developing pre-natal tests and living out an angsty existence...

Every day there are headlines in the news of scientists worldwide making bolder and bolder progress in the field of gene therapy and along with growing hope for revolutionary cures comes a tremendous fear of the unintended consequences we simply have no way to foresee. Errors of the Human Body does not tell the story of those consequences like the thematically similar Splice but instead focuses on what such a decision can do to one person. Geoff Burton played morosely by Michael Eklund is a brilliant but tortured geneticist who struggles with the memories of his deceased infant son a death that was caused by a unique tumorous disease that his...

Errors Of The Human Body
Stars: Michael Eklund, Karoline Herfurth, Tomas Lemarquis, Rik Mayall, Caroline Gerdolle | Written by Eron Sheean, Shane Danielsen | Directed by Eron Sheean
The debut feature from screenwriter Eron Sheean, who was responsible for penning The Divide for Xavier Gens (which also starred Michael Eklund), Errors of the Human Body is a film that belies genre-specific categorisation. Part Michael Crichton medical thriller, part David Cronenberg body-horror, with a hint of the classic Frankenstein, it’s both a challenging and intriguing film – although it is not without its faults.
The film follows Canadian scientist Dr Geoff Burton (Eklund) who takes up a position at a scientific institute in Dresden, Germany, with the intention of continuing his research into random embryonic abnormalities – research borne out of a personal tragedy (the death of his infant son) that has haunted him for years. Geoff is haunted by personal demons - he's struggling to move on from his marriage's disintegration after his new-born baby died of a mystery virus (which he has since dedicated his career to curing), and salt is thrown in the wound when he hears his ex-wife has fallen pregnant to her new husband. Arriving for his first day on the job, Geoff learns from the Institute's Director (Rik Mayall) that he had an ulterior motive for luring Geoff to Dresden - Geoff's old flame Rebekka (Karoline Herfurth) has discovered a new gene which rapidly accelerates cell regeneration in amphibians, and they want his help working out how to introduce it into mammals. It's a discovery that promises medical miracles,...

Errors of the Human Body
Directed by Eron Sheean
Written by Eron Sheean and Shane Danielson
U.S.A./Germany, 2012
There is so much potential in films relating to scientific experiments gone awry that one wonders why there are not more which play at Fantasia. Part of the reason may have to do with the fact that the premise is too limiting and only so many plot development can arise from it. However limited the number of story points may be, the thematic structure they may adopt are multitudinous, whether the screenwriters and directors go for emotional gravitas, horror or more science-fiction based material. Eron Sheean opts for a healthy mixture of all three in his latest film, Errors of the Human Body, where hopeful scientific research for the future has immediate impacts on the present and bring back harsh memories from the past.

The Australian Cinematographers Society (Acs) held an industry event last week to celebrate the launch of its book The Shadowcatchers.
The event, held at Balmain Town Hall, included a discussion featuring Oscar-winning filmmaker and cartoonist Bruce Petty, filmmaker and Shadowcatchers author Martha Ansara, and documentarian Curtis Levy.
Levy said many of Australia's top cinematographers, such as Dean Semler, Don McAlpine and Geoff Burton (who was also in the audience), started their careers in the news department of the ABC..
"I think that's got something to do with why so many of the top Australian cinematographers are so sought after in Hollywood because they're able to work in available light and work quickly and have a physicality that came from that ability to move the subject and not worry too much about having big crews and lights."

Eron Sheean will be doing his first feature with the psychological thriller Errors of the Human Body and while the premise sounds fantastic, I'd recommend checking out clips of his short film Fledgling which is about a fetus born out into the desert who carwls around and is eventually adopted by a nomad. It's stop motion sweetness!

SYDNEY -- With his debut feature Lucky Miles, Michael James Rowland leaches the politics out of the prickly topic of illegal immigration and turns out an unexpectedly amiable comedy. The narrative -- which follows a motley crew of asylum seekers stumbling through the Outback -- lacks momentum, and the film falls short of the Gods Must Be Crazy-style mayhem for which it appears to be shooting. But its congeniality is disarming, and the themes are slyly conscience-pricking.
Inspired by a number of real-life events, Miles features a cast of unknowns, which, together with frequent subtitles, could limit accessibility upon its local release. It's already proven to be a festival favorite in Australia, and Cineclick Asia has picked it up for international distribution.
Setting the action in 1990, Rowland harks back to a time before the nation, or at least its government, seemed to lose any sense of compassion for the Third World refugees seeking sanctuary on its shores. It starts on a cheery note as a group of Cambodians and Iraqis wade ashore after being dropped off by Indonesian people-smugglers on a deserted stretch of coastline in Western Australia.
Their joy soon turns to despair as the boat chugs off. They crest the sand dunes to discover, instead of the promised bus stop to Perth, an abundance of what is referred to by locals as "bugger-all."
They splinter into two groups: Iraqis heading one way into nothingness, Cambodians the other. The Cambodians are quickly picked up by police after they stop at an isolated pub to ask directions, though a fateful trip to the outhouse means one, Arun (Kenneth Moraleda), escapes the roundup. Meanwhile, a bunch of laconic army reservists on border patrol have been dispatched to investigate a suspicious fishing boat in the area.
They pick up Arun's tracks but soon discover three sets of footprints: A couple of only slightly strained plot contrivances have thrown the Cambodian together with one of the Iraqis, a structural engineer named Youssif (Rodney Afif), and Ramelan (Srisacd Sacdpraseuth), the Indonesian boat owner's ne'er-do-well nephew.
The ill-matched trio unites around a single water bottle and shared survival instincts, though the two refugees wonder how much they can trust a man who sadly informs them that his mother died before he was born. Arun's sketchy map gives no sense of the unpopulated vastness that surrounds them and sends them off on an elliptical odyssey that sorely tests their uneasy alliance.
Underpinning the naive slapstick and droll verbal clashes is a deep seam of humanism that makes its point about tolerance of difference gently. Heated debate about national identity and the ethics of detention have no place in this comic fable, and neither do cultural stereotypes.
Discord is rooted in the need for survival in a strange and hostile environment. Even the army trackers seem motivated by a desire to save the skins of the bumbling trespassers.
Moraleda is particularly effective as the politely resolute Arun, dogged in his determination to reach Perth and the father he has never met. Afif gets great comic mileage out of a centerpiece scene involving a cobbled-together Jeep.
Indian composer Trilok Gurtu contributes a dramatic percussive score, while cinematographer Geoff Burton does a terrific job conveying the enormity of the brutally beautiful West Australian landscapes.

MONTREAL -- David Stevens' off-Broadway hit play has been transferred to the screen with more care than is usual, not surprising since Stevens adapted it himself and it is directed by the original theater director Kevin Dowling, in collaboration with Australian cinematographer Geoff Burton. The film is in the official competition at the Montreal World Film Festival.
This audience-pleasing Australian effort has the same gentle qualities as a "Driving Miss Daisy", although its theatrical origins are a little more evident, thanks to such devices as having the characters talk directly to the camera.
Story concerns the relationship between widower Harry Mitchell (Jack Thompson), a hard-drinking taxi driver, and his son Jeff (Russell Crowe), a gay man looking for love. Harry and Jeff live together, and far from there being strife over Jeff's sexual orientation, Harry is extremely supportive, to the point where he buys gay porn magazines in order to educate himself.
When Jeff brings home a date, Harry tries to make him feel right at home. This is a little disconcerting to Jeff's latest prospect, Greg (John Poison), a hunky gardner, who is still in the closet with his own family.
While Jeff and Greg are struggling with their own relationship, Harry himself is looking for companionship, and meets Joyce (Deborah Kennedy), a divorcee, through a computer dating service. The pair nervously hit it off, but Joyce is scared off when she discovers that Jeff is gay, and before the couple can work it out, tragedy strikes, and Harry is crippled by a stroke.
Far from weighing the film down, the subsequent caretaking of Harry by Jeff provides some of the funniest scenes as well as the picture's most moving ones. The blending of comedy and pathos is truly artful, and rare in today's schematic cinema.
"The Sum of Us", like many plays turned into films, is less than subtle, but it sneaks up on you, so that by the end you are thoroughly involved in the character's predicaments. Helping this along are the skillful performances. Thompson, in an atypical role, brings a charm and ease to his performance that will win over audiences worldwide, and Crowe plays his part with an engaging combination of sweetness and comic exasperation.
