Drew Barrymore once thought she got high whilst smoking fake marijuana on a film set.
The 42-year-old actress was shooting for 2010's 'Going The Distance' with Justin Long when she was tasked with smoking from a fake bong, but according to the prop expert Jeff Butcher, the blonde beauty believed she had actually smoked the drug, and both her and director Nanette Burstein thought she was high.
Jeff said: "There was a scene with Drew Barrymore and Justin Long where they smoke out of a bong, and it was kind of a mixed experience. [We used a] herb that looks like weed but doesn't get you high.
"I spent like an hour smoking this bong to try and make it look like a bong that had been smoked in before. And then, you know, we did the scene and Drew thought that she was high and the directors thought that she was high!

Have you ever wondered what fake drugs and alcohol seen in movies are made of? Prop experts Jeff Butcher (“The Wrestler”) and Eric Cheripka (“American Gangster”) have revealed some tricks of the trade via Refinery29.
For cocaine, Butcher usually uses inositol, a vitamin found in plants and animals that is commonly used to cut the real drug. “It’ll give you a slight energy lift because it’s a Vitamin B,” he said. The vitamin gives people such a strong lift that, according to Butcher, while filming “The Wrestler,” Mickey Rourke asked him, “Are you sure there’s nothing in this, I feel like I’m getting a lift?”

When you make a stoner comedy, you will, at some point, need to film your characters smoking something. It goes with the territory. There are numerous reasons why having your characters smoke actual marijuana is probably a bad idea. While it isn.t illegal everywhere anymore it.s still likely to be against the law where you.re filming. Even if that.s not an issue, unless you make the smoking scenes the last scene of each day, your actor.s will probably be useless for the rest of the day. So what.s a director to do? It turns out that "legal bud" is a thing, so it does a great job standing in for the illegal bud. Jeff Butcher is a professional prop master, so it.s his job to provide drug alternatives when they.re needed in a movie. He was the prop master for Pineapple Express,...

Last month I attended the Sundance Film Festival, and as always, there were a lot of films that featured lots of characters snorting lots of cocaine. Sundance films like their cocaine, but we see actors snorting a cocaine-like substance up their noses all the time in the movies. It’s obviously not really cocaine, though.
If you’ve ever wondered what the actors are really snorting, I have the answer for you, thanks to the Independent. What Hollywood has used has changed over the years, and in the past, like back in the 70s and 80s, they were using powdered milk and baking soda. These days, though, when you see an actor snorting something up their nose is a powered called inositol, which is also used as a cutting agent for actual cocaine.
