It was originally announced back in 2021 that HBO Max was developing a “Garbage Pail Kids” animated series, with Danny McBride and David Gordon Green (Halloween, The Exorcist: Believer) co-creating and writing the series for Rough House Pictures.
What’s the latest on that project? Speaking with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gordon Green reveals in a new chat that the planned “Garbage Pail Kids” animated series is still alive.
“Right now, McBride and I are trying to do an animated series on the Garbage Pail Kids,” Gordon Green tells the show. “So we’re working on that and we’ve got some pretty cool ways we can make a naughty animated show, we’ll see if they’ll have us on that one.”
Last we heard, Josh Bycel (“Solar Opposites”) is also writing and co-creating alongside the duo.

David Gordon Green and Danny McBride got their careers started together, with McBride working as the “additional second unit director” on Green’s feature directorial debut, the 2000 drama George Washington. Since then, they have collaborated on many more projects, from comedies that starred McBride to Green films where McBride was listed as executive producer, and even the recent Halloween trilogy Green directed, where they crafted the story for each film together. Green and McBride also share story credit on the newly released The Exorcist: Believer, which Green directed – and while doing the press rounds for his new movie, Green confirmed that he and McBride are still working on a new animated series based on the Garbage Pail Kids.
Green and McBride’s Garbage Pail Kids reboot was first announced back in 2021, when it was said that it would be a “family friendly” show for the Max streaming service. As it turns out,...

The Garbage Pail Kids animated series that David Gordon Green was developing with Danny McBride and Josh Bycel is not dead yet.
“Right now, McBride and I are trying to do an animated series on the Garbage Pail Kids, if you ever had those cards,” Green said during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “So we’re working on that and we’ve got some pretty cool ways we can make a naughty animated show, we’ll see if they’ll have us on that one.”
Green didn’t provide much insight into the development of the show but in 2021 it was confirmed that HBO Max, now known as Max, was working on an animated series based on the trading cards by the Topps Company. At the time of the announcement, the show was described as being “family-friendly,” in contrast to the “naughty animated show” Green said on the podcast.

Hulu’s Solar Opposites will sound different when it returns for its fourth season. Solar Opposites co-creator Justin Roiland, who voiced Korvo for three seasons, is out. The new season finds the grumpy alien has adopted a distinctly British accent, thanks to Dan Stevens stepping in and taking over the voice role. And the just-released trailer provides our first real look at/listen to the major shift.
In addition to Dan Stevens, season four features Thomas Middleditch back as Terry, Sean Giambrone reprising his role as Yumyulack, and Mary Mack returning as Jesse. Mike McMahan and Josh Bycel serve as executive producers.
The upcoming season will consist of 11 episodes and is set to premiere on August 14, 2023. Hulu’s aiming at a 2024 premiere for a Valentine’s Day special.
The Plot, Courtesy of Hulu:
Solar Opposites centers around a team of four aliens who are evenly split on whether Earth is awful or awesome.

Hulu has revealed a new look at Selena Gomez, Steve Martin and Martin Short in the third season of “Only Murders in the Building,” which is set to premiere on August 8.
Season 3 will follow Charles (Martin), Oliver (Short) and Mabel (Gomez) as they dig deeper into a murder that takes place behind the scenes of a Broadway show. Ben Glenroy’s (Paul Rudd) Broadway debut is shortened after his sudden death, in which Charles, Oliver and Mabel band together to investigate. Dan Stevens joins ‘Solar Opposites’ (Photo Credit: Sam Jones)
Solar Opposites co-creator Justin Roiland is out and Dan Stevens is in as the voice of the grumpy, Earth-loathing alien Korvo. Hulu announced the change two months out from the planned launch of season four, with Stevens committed to handling the voice of Korvo for both season four and season five.
For those pointing out that Dan Stevens sounds nothing like Justin Roiland, the upcoming season acknowledges that in a very Solar Opposite-y way. Hulu’s nearly two-minute sneak peek of season four reveals just how Korvo comes to suddenly speak with a very British accent.
Dan Stevens joins a voice cast that includes Thomas Middleditch as Terry, Sean Giambrone as Yumyulack, and Mary Mack as Jesse. Mike McMahan and Josh Bycel serve as executive producers.

ABC’s ratings-challenged Happy Endings created a cult following thanks to its relatable stories about a group of friends in their late 20s and early 30s. While the comedy helped to launch the careers of stars Eliza Coupe (Jane), Elisha Cuthbert (Alex), Zachary Knighton (Dave), Adam Pally (Max), Damon Wayans Jr. (Brad) and Casey Wilson (Penny), behind the scenes, the Sony-produced series created by David Caspe was effectively its own showrunner training program. As Rutherford Falls creator Sierra Teller Ornelas revealed in a recent Twitter thread, Happy Endings had 23 writers over its three seasons, with an incredible 21 — including assistants — becoming showrunners.
During this week’s TV’s Top 5 podcast, hosts Lesley Goldberg and Daniel Fienberg reunite 14 of the Happy Endings writers to build off Ornelas’ thread and discuss, in light of the ongoing Writers Guild strike, the benefits of having a traditional writers rooms, why having writers on set...

ABC is entering the 2021-22 TV season as only one of two broadcast networks with live-action comedies on the fall schedule. The Disney-owned network has high hopes for the latest addition to its family comedy brand, a reboot of The Wonder Years, which joins The Goldbergs, The Conners and Home Economics in ABC’s signature Wednesday comedy block.
The network is also premiering the hip-hop drama Queens, which will airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. after the latest cycle of The Bachelorette.
For Craig Erwich, President, ABC Entertainment and Hulu Originals, this marks the first broadcast schedule and fall launch he has worked on since he left the No. 2 programming executive post at Fox 14 years ago. He added oversight of ABC Entertainment in December to his job running content for Hulu as part of a major restructure at Disney, which saw Karey Burke become president of 20th Television.

Eva Longoria will direct and executive produce a single-cam comedy in the works at ABC that hails from Grace Parra Janney and Josh Bycel.
The untitled series is inspired by Janney’s own large Mexican American family in Texas. It is described as a multi-generational comedy about an upper middle class family handling grief, identity, and a reevaluation of their roles following the death of the family’s patriarch.
“I’ve been a huge fan of Josh’s work since our time together on ‘Telenovela’ and Grace and I share similar ‘Texican’ backgrounds,” Longoria said. “At UnbeliEVAble we are always pushing to tell real and authentic stories so I’m particularly proud to share one that is not unlike my own family’s experience.”
Parra Janney and Bycel are writers and executive producers on the series. Longoria executive produces under her UnbeliEVAble Entertainment banner along with UnbeliEVAble’s Ben Spector.

It isn’t often that a subplot overtakes the plot in prominence, but that’s what makes “Solar Opposites” uniquely fun and ambitious. Hulu’s adult-oriented animated sitcom from “Rick and Morty” co-creator Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan (“Star Trek: Lower Decks”) basically gives you two shows in one: a sci-fi sitcom about a race of aliens stranded in middle America, and a serial adventure about the humans they shrink that are imprisoned inside the Wall.
And, in Season 2, the Wall turns into a “True Detective”-like conspiracy thriller involving power, corruption, and murder within the fledgling micro society.
Thus, it’s no accident that both Wall episodes from Season 1 (“Terry and Korvo Steal a Bear”) and Season 2 (“The Unlikely Demise of Terry’s Favorite Shot Glass”) were submitted by Hulu for Emmy consideration. Fans and critics alike are fascinated by the parallel story about totalitarianism. “We were having so...

“Solar Opposites” has been renewed for Season 4 at Hulu.
The news comes before Season 3 of the series has aired, with that season set to launch in 2022. The show had received a two-season order when it was first picked up at Hulu. Season 2 of the series was released in its entirety on March 26.
The series centers around a team of four aliens who escape their exploding home world only to crash land into a move-in ready home in suburban America. They are evenly split on whether Earth is awful or awesome. Korvo (Justin Roiland) and Yumyulack (Sean Giambrone) only see the pollution, crass consumerism, and human frailty while Terry (Thomas Middleditch) and Jesse (Mary Mack) love humans and all their TV, junk food and fun stuff. Their mission: protect the Pupa, a living super computer that will one day evolve into its true form, consume them and terraform the Earth.

Thursday’s events include major panels for a shows from HBO (“His Dark Materials”), Amazon Prime Video (“The Boys”) and CBS All Access (“Star Trek: Picard”).
The Comic-Con@Home schedule — starting with Wednesday, July 22 — is being announced daily through Sunday.
All times are Pacific Daylight.

Along with the Paul Zbyszewski EP’d Tom Austen and Sydney Lemmon making its Sdcc debut, Hulu will also be bringing the Thomas Middleditch-led aliens comedy Solar Opposites and the raunchy Crossing Swords. No need to boot up the “Retrace-Your-Step-Alizer”, Solar Opposites is coming back.
Hulu has ordered Solar Opposites season 3, according to Variety. Solar Opposites season 2 had already previously been confirmed when Hulu confirmed the series for a two-season, 16 episode order. The first batch of those 16 episodes premiered with the eight-episode season 1 on May 8, 2020. Solar Opposites season 3 will consist of 12 episodes and does yet have a release date announced.
Created by Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland and writer Mike McMahan, Solar Opposites occupies a similar animated sci-fi comedy universe as its Morty-ian forefather. The show follows two aliens Korvo (Roiland) and Terry (Thomas Middleditch); their child-like “replicants” Yumyulack (Sean Giambrone) and Jesse (Mary Mack), and of course: their Pupa (Sagan McMahan….and Liev Schreiber briefly).
The show follows these alien “Schlorpians” after they escape the destruction of their planet and begin new, charmingly mundane lives on Earth. Through season 1’s eight episodes,...

Hulu over the past month launched a foray into original adult animation with the premieres of Solar Opposites and Crossing Swords. Both have now been picked up for additional seasons.
Solar Opposites, which had an initial two-season order, has been renewed for a third season; Crossing Swords has been picked up for a second season.
Hulu first dipped its toe into original adults animated content in its early days with the 2013 The Awesomes. Solar Opposites, which launched May 8 as Hulu’s most-watched original comedy premiere to date, and Crossing Swords, which debuted June 12, are the platform’s first original efforts since but Hulu had been building a slate of acquired adult animated series, including Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers, Rick and Morty, Futurama and King of the Hill. The category has been driving engagement and currently holds the highest average re-watch rate on the service, which fueled the original expansion.

Hulu has renewed the adult animated comedies “Solar Opposites” and “Crossing Swords.”
The renewal marks a Season 3 pickup for “Solar Opposites,” which was initially given a two-season order when it was first announced. “Crossing Swords” has been picked up for a second season. Season 1 of “Solar Opposites” debuted on May 8, while “Crossing Swords” debuted on June 12. Season 3 of “Solar Opposites” will consist of 12 episodes while Season 2 of “Crossing Swords” will consist of 10.
The two shows mark some of the only adult animation on Hulu to date, though there are multiple such shows in the works at the streamer. There were previously four Marvel animated shows set up at Hulu, but two of them were scrapped back in January. Both “M.O.D.O.K.” and “Hit Monkey” are still moving forward.
Animation is also one of the few types of production that has been able to weather the production shutdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The invasion of Earth shall continue until such time that the pupa has matured enough to destroy it…or the aliens get bored of their “manc ave.” That’s right, Solar Opposites season 2 is confirmed.
Now if you don’t recall Hulu making the official season 2 announcement after season 1 premiered, don’t fret – they didn’t. But that doesn’t mean that Solar Opposites isn’t getting a second season. Tucked into Deadline’s announcement of when the show was first announced is one very pertinent, oft-overlooked detail. Solar Opposites’s initial order at Hulu was for two full seasons of eight episodes each. Season 1’s eight episodes premiered on May 8. Now it’s just a waiting game for season 2.
Solar Opposites is the next animated effort from Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland. Roiland created and runs the show along with fellow Rick and Morty writer Mike McMahan. Solar Opposites...

Solar Opposites, a new animated offering from Rick and Morty creative duo Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan, is headed to Hulu, set to showcase the story of a family of advanced extraterrestrials who have been forced to take refuge on a planet in the backwater part of the galaxy, called Earth, specifically in suburban middle America.
Brandishing obvious aesthetic similarities to the ultra-popular Adult Swim series, Solar Opposites will feature a voice cast consisting of Roiland, joined by Sean Giambrone (The Goldbergs), Mary Mack (Golan the Insatiable) and Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley).
Hulu was clearly confident in Roiland and McMahan, having given their new brainchild a two-season order back in August 2018, confirming 16-episodes overall and cementing Solar Opposites Season 2 nearly two years before the series would ultimately premiere.
