William Shakespeare's King Lear has a new film adaptation thanks to Screen Media Films and Amazon Studios. This latest adaptation of the story is set in a "fictional" present day and Sir Anthony Hopkins' take on the role of King Lear, and as you'll see in the first U.S. trailer below, he's going to be awesome in the role! You can't go wrong with an Anthony Hopkins and Shakespeare combination.
Set in the fictional present and starring Anthony Hopkins, the 80 year-old King Lear divides his kingdom among his daughters, Goneril, Regan and Cordelia, according to their affection for him. When his youngest daughter, Cordelia, refuses to flatter him, hurt and angry Lear banishes her. With that fateful decision, family and state collapse into chaos and warfare.
The rest of the cast includes Jim Broadbent, Emily Watson, Florence Pugh, Jim Carter, Tobias Menzies, John Macmillan, Anthony Calf, Simon Manyonda,...

"Better thou hadst not been born... than not t' have pleased me better." Screen Media Films has debuted an official Us trailer for the latest Shakespeare adaptation of King Lear, which already opened in UK cinemas in May. This new King Lear, set in a "fictional" present day, stars Sir Anthony Hopkins as the iconic King Lear, deciding to divide his kingdom among his three daughters according to their affection for him. The full cast includes Jim Broadbent, Emily Watson, Florence Pugh, Jim Carter, Tobias Menzies, John Macmillan, Anthony Calf, Simon Manyonda, Chukwudi Iwuji, and the great Emma Thompson. There's always room for more cinematic Shakespeare adaptations, right? Though this one looks very stagey, and very made-for-tv, which might explain why it didn't show up at any film festivals or otherwise. Enjoy. Here's the official Us trailer (+ original UK poster) for Richard Eyre's King Lear, direct from YouTube:...

It’s great when a fancy costume picture really has something to say — Alan Bennett’s crazy tale of a king’s episode of mental illness becomes a highly entertaining comedy of errors, but with serious personal and political ramifications. Nigel Hawthorne is exceptionally good as the sovereign whose brain has de-railed; Helen Mirren, Ian Holm, Rupert Everett and Amanda Donohoe variously try to help him — or steal his crown.

Mark Gatiss pens Doctor Who series 10 episode 9, as we head off to the red planet in Empress Of Mars...
This review contains spoilers. Our spoiler-free review is here.
10.9 Empress Of Mars
“Is this Neil Armstrong?”
Now that’s how to end a Doctor Who episode.
Following what had been a fairly enjoyable 40-odd minutes, Mark Gatiss demonstrated again his underappreciated love of adding in a classic Who reference to his stories, by having a good chunk of the audience scrambling for their Peladon DVDs. The appearance of Alpha Centauri – voiced again by Ysanne Churchman! – was just the kind of surprise that I thought the show had lost the ability to keep. A small addition, but one that both gives long-time fans an added grin, and also gives the impression that the universe ticks along whether the Doctor is visiting or not.
If Alpha Centauri is entirely new to you,...

A bit character in Matt Brown‘s affecting biographical drama The Man Who Knew Infinity chants “Din, Din, Din, Gunga Din” a couple times in friendly jest as a response to his employer G.H. Hardy’s (Jeremy Irons) decision to send for an uneducated South Indian man on the merits of a letter presenting the potential for mathematical genius named Srinivasa Ramanujan (Dev Patel). We laugh at the line’s delivery as well as Hardy’s humored look of contempt because we embrace levity. What’s ironic, though, is just how close to Rudyard Kipling’s tragic poem this story of a true intellectual legend proves. The “abuse” isn’t physical and Hardy almost instantly acknowledges Ramanujan to be the better mind, but similarities including its depiction of race relations between Britain and India remain.
This is why I found myself enjoying the film as much as I did.
