Tamil superstar Chiyaan Vikram is donning his most brutally savage, and barbaric look in the teaser for his upcoming film ‘Thangalaan’. Vikram essays a tribal fighter who only looks out for his own people. Vikram’s tribe is unwelcoming to foreigners and will spill blood if they detect even an ounce of threat.
The teaser shows that the film will have a rather bleak, dark, and morose tone and opens with the words: “As myth leads to history, as greed leads to destruction, as blood wars lead to liberty, rises the son of gold.”
Set during the time of British India, ‘Thanglaan’ centres on the Kolar Gold Fields and the British trying to mine the gold by uprooting the tribe. Vikram, who is most likely either the tribe’s leader or one of its most ferocious fighters is shown to be almost animalistic.

Savvas D. Michael’s 2023 action-comedy Hitmen is an attempt to force humor into a gangster plot and hope that the audience finds the marital discontent between a bumbling couple hilarious. Unfortunately, it’s the opposite, and the lead characters, Luke (Daniel Caltagirone) and Lauren (Lois Brabin-Platt) Loveday, end up becoming an insufferable duo quite quickly. While Eric Roberts tries his best as the dangerous Michael Hero, a lot of other talent is simply wasted because of poor direction and a lack of clarity about what to do with the script. After adding a bunch of characters and with a massive runtime to fill, the director lets the story run amok, and soon enough, Hitmen becomes a jumbled mess. Here’s what happens in the flea market version of British gangster comedy that we’re used to seeing.

Twenty-five years on from Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels the British gangster revival is still going strong. Case in point Hitmen, the new film from writer/director Savvas D. Michael who has already made several contributions to the genre including The Bezonians, Smoking Guns and Original Gangster.
Luke and Lauren are having marital issues. But that doesn’t mean she’s thrilled when Jackie starts hitting on her and when she mocks him, hitting her. This leads to a beating which in turn leads to Jackie’s death.
That would be bad enough, but Jackie’s grandfather Michael is a wealthy CEO with some rather shady connections. When they’re acquitted by reason of self-defense he puts a million-dollar contract on the couple.

Couple who kill a man for harassing them in the pub are pursued by an army of his father’s goons. A few sparky performances can’t redeem this cartoonish thriller
One might start to wonder if the career of British writer-director Savvas D Michael (previously responsible for The Bezonians) may be propelled, like the scam in The Producers, by a deliberate intention to make crap movies for an investment write-off. Anything is possible in the wild and wonderful world of the film business. The only other explanation is that Michael thinks the laddish, nihilistically violent and yet not in the slightest bit amusing quasi-cartoon world he’s created in Hitman is entertaining. Could anyone be that deluded?
Hitmen’s inciting incident occurs when a bickering couple, office administrator Luke (Daniel Caltagirone) and estate agent Lauren are harassed in a pub by a drunken visiting American (Max Lohan) who is trying pick up Lauren.

There are twelve films from the United Kingdom, forming the centerpiece of this year’s line-up. These include James Moran’s Blood Shed, starring Shaun Dooley and Sally Phillips, where a man’s love of his garden shed takes a rather murderous turn. In Judgement, Neil Maskell stars as a single man looking for love in all the wrong places and Laurence R. Harvey shines as a mutated children’s’ toy in Teddy Bear’S Picnic. Then there’s Katie Bonham’s Mab, about a girl who turns to witchcraft to teach someone a lesson.

Elderly in crisis, youngster who can help, drug being salvation and all sorts of drama bubbling around after use of drug – it’s a struggle to rid a particular TV show from the mind while watching this film, even when the protagonists spend more time in the kitchen than an Rv. That said, director John Goldschmidt’s latest, which also marks his return to the craft since 1987, would fill the small-screen mold with utter perfection. In some ways, staying in that state would have been enough for Dough.
But then comes Jonathan Pryce who makes a semi-compelling reason to shell out for the film at the cinema. The powerhouse actor, sporting a beard and kippah, commands every frame with a heartfelt turn as Nat Dayan, the owner of a family pastry joint not so hot in sales and longevity. While he makes his way to the store at 4 a.m.

If there’s ever a phrase that will have me instantly reaching for my wallet it’s “a Scott Adkins film…” Honestly, nine times out of ten I will buy an Adkins film without so much as seeing a trailer. Why? Well because for me, Adkins is keeping the Dtv dream alive, picking up the action hard-man mantle from 90s pioneers like Jeff Speakman, Olivier Gruner, Gary Daniels and in particular Jeff Wincott, one of the only other true action heroes to have the same perfect blend of fighting skills, charisma and acting chops as Adkins.

Since everyone loves Nazi Zombies as much as I do, I am thrilled to talk about two upcoming Nazi Zombie movies that look more than promising. Exciting is an understatement, even.
Today, Dark Sky Films released the first two official stills from Dutch director Richard Raaphorst’s Nazi Zombie horror film Frankenstein's Army.
This is someone called “Propellerhead”, described officially as "a hulking Nazi automaton that uses its spinning rotors to slice a bloody swath through the film’s terrified, lost Russian battalion."
And this is Doctor Frankenstein, as played by Karel Roden, dissecting someone unwilling to be dissected.
Like any good Nazi Zombie movie, Frankenstein's Army is set at the tail-end of World War II, when Russian soldiers accidentally find a secret Nazi laboratory as they enter Germany's eastern end. Apparently, the journals of Dr. Viktor Frankenstein are serving as the basis for human experimentation to form a -...

Director: Nick Cohen.
Writers: Mark Anthony Galluzzo and Chris Baker.
This review is going back a little to After Dark Horrorfest's 2010 lineup which included The Reeds. This is a film that sees several friends boating around the United Kingdom in tragic fashion. This weekender involves exploding propane tanks, vicious burns and gory impalements. Most would classify this title a horror film, but the film goes a little deeper than that into history and into tragedy.
Laura (Anna Brewster), Joe (Daniel Caltagirone), Mel (Emma Catherwood), Nick (O.T. Fagbenle) and Chris (Will Mellor) head out on a boat rented to them by Mr. Croker (George Bell). Quickly, they become lost in head height reeds, until there is a light in the distance. That light is firelight and burning is Mr. Croker's dog. This is some foreshadowing for events to come as several cast members will meet a similar fiery fate.

Dealing with the tenuousness and unreliability of memory, Jonathan Sagall has crafted a sophomore feature that isn’t easy to shake. An Israeli-raised, Canadian-born filmmaker, many at the Toronto International Film Festival were interested to discover why he chose to tell a story about two Palestinian women. Attempting to remain as politically correct and honest as possible, his response was a resounding, “This is a story about people”. To Sagall, his work doesn’t deal with two sides of a never-ending war or two religions at odds with one another. Whereas audience members wanted an underlying salacious manifesto of political turmoil, they received the complicated love story built around the loss of innocence found on its surface. The message would be the same if the characters were Jewish, Muslim, Christian, male, or female. Those attributes are merely details in the grand scope of the unforgettable horror soon revealed, one that...

London -- Writer/director Jonathan Sagall has signed up Natali Atia, Clara Khoury, Daniel Caltagirone and Tali Knight to star in his project "Lipstikka."
The movie, due to shoot here in the British capital and on location in Haifa, Israel, details the story of two teenage girls -- one Christian, one Muslim -- who decide to celebrate a birthday by an illicit trip to the cinema and sneak over the divide into West Jerusalem where their paths cross two Israeli soldiers. Years later the two girls come together in London and the layers of remembered events are stripped away revealing vastly different stories that have scarred their lives.
Sagall also produces along with Guy Allon with John Reiss and David Willing taking exec producer roles.
The project is backed by Israel Film Fund, John Reiss & Associates and Monumental Productions. The film is scheduled to be ready for release Spring 2010, the filmmakers said.

Aside from maybe those who would pay to see a preshorn Keri Russell, there isn't much in the way of an audience for "Mad About Mambo", a cloyingly artificial romantic comedy set in Northern Ireland that features the "Felicity" star in all her former follicular glory.
Serving as a feature filmmaking bow for screenwriter-director John Forte, the Gramercy Pictures remnant is a lazy retread of "Dirty Dancing", "Strictly Ballroom", "The Full Monty" and just about whatever else could be cribbed to boost theoretical commercial potential.
But the uninspired result comes across more like "Focus Group: The Movie" rather than any sort of greatest-hits package, despite the bonus Dublin-doubling-for-Belfast backdrop.
Actually produced pre-"Felicity", the film initially focuses on 18-year-old Danny Mitchell (William Ash), a student at St. Joseph's, a Catholic boys' school in working-class West Belfast. An avid soccer player who dreams of playing professionally for Belfast United, which recently imported star Brazilian player Carlos Rega (Daniel Caltagirone), Danny decides his style could benefit from a little Latin rhythmic infusion.
When his self-taught approach fails to generate the desired results, Danny enrolls at a dance studio, where he spots Lucy McLaughlin (Russell), a fair but somewhat chilly lass who's preparing for the Regional Latin Dance Finals with her pompous, possessive dance partner/boyfriend, Oliver (Theo Fraser Steele).
Thanks to some particularly lame plotting that conveniently puts Oliver out of the picture for a while, Danny hooks up with privileged, private-school-attending Lucy, and you just know their differences and initial hostilities will eventually melt into something warm and wonderful.
While Russell can certainly look the part, the only thing more tentative than her Irish brogue is her on-screen chemistry with British actor Ash. Their imposed romance feels as choreographed as their fancy dance moves, and even those -- for the most part tellingly shot above the waist -- are suspect.
Busy character actor Brian Cox, on the other hand, does his best Albert Finney as Sidney McLaughlin, Lucy's colorful local entrepreneur dad.
But despite a buoyant soundtrack that works overtime to fill the voids of energy and passion with selections by the likes of Xavier Cugat, Astrud Gilberto, Sergio Mendes and even a Spice Girls cover band, it's not enough to make up for Forte's slapped-together hodgepodge of recycled movie moments.

The search by nomadic westerners for "experience" in the mysterious East gets a satirical send-up in Danny Boyle's "The Beach", a movie that is part adventure story, part morality tale and sometimes gets tangled up in its own artistic ambitions. With Leonardo DiCaprio taking his first starring role since "Titanic" and an adroit use of lush Thai locations, "The Beach" looks headed for boxoffice paradise no matter what Leonardo's fans make of his character's nuttiness. An international cast won't hurt the movie overseas either.
In adapting Alex Garland's 1996 novel, Boyle and his filmmaking partner, screenwriter John Hodge, clearly want their movie to work on two levels: one a rousing venture into the exotic, filled with escapes from sharks and narco commanders; and the other, borrowing heavily from Conrad, Goulding and Francis Ford Coppola, a tale of horror and moral ambiguity.
These two levels don't always peacefully co-exist. All too often, the film must resort to a narration by the protagonist or heavy-handed imagery to underscore its themes.
Of these two tracks, the travel tale works better. Our hero, Richard (DiCaprio), a chain-smoking, backpacking American, has journeyed to Thailand to escape Western culture and technology. He's searching for a paradise but has no idea where to find it.
Then someone hands him a map.
In a rickety Bangkok hotel, a half-crazed Scot suitably named Daffy (Robert Carlyle), gives Richard a hand-drawn map to "the beach," a hidden and forbidden Eden on a Thai island. Then Daffy messily commits suicide.
On a lark -- and with no little attraction for the woman -- Richard asks a French couple, Francoise (Virginie Ledoyen) and Etienne (Guillaume Canet), to set off with him to find this beach. An arduous trek takes the trio on trains and boats, a swim through open sea, a crawl past vicious guards and a jump from the top of a waterfall to reach the forbidden beach.
There they discover a colony of European dropouts headed by an Englishwoman named Sal (Tilda Swinton). Days of frolicking in the sun and nights of dope smoking go by with little stress or strain. But Boyle and Hodge build tension with carefully dropped hints that something more sinister lurks beneath the blissed-out surfaces.
However, problems lurk on the surface of the film as well. As we vicariously enjoy Richard's vacation, we wonder why after all this time we don't know any of these characters any better. Who the hell is Richard, and why does he need a vacation from the West? A romance between him and Francoise drives a wedge between Francoise and Etienne. But this takes place accompanied by a Gallic shrug.
Most of those in the commune are virtually ignored by the filmmakers. The few who do emerge from the crowd seemingly have but one outstanding character trait -- say, Sal's strong will, Unhygenix's (Daniel Caltagirone) hatred of fish smells or the jealousy of Bugs (Lars Arentz Hansen), Sal's lover.
Then Richard suddenly wigs out. In his mind, the island becomes one big video game and he is its Rambo-like warrior hero. Seemingly triggered by mental images from "Apocalypse Now" and Nintendo games, his detachment from the commune happens too abruptly and without convincing details.
In the end, melodrama triumphs over drama. The climax with its chilling ruthlessness and destruction of paradise is something of a letdown after tension has been built so nicely.
While any actor would struggle to play such a confusing and contradictory character, DiCaprio finds a way to suggest a young man whose isolation travels with him, who seeks human company but has trouble with intimacy. This doesn't completely explain his Kurtz-like lunacy but does at least lay the groundwork for his exile from the commune.
Curiously, Canet plays the only character with any kind of moral dimension. He is the one person to resist the beach's stimuli. Ledoyen is extremely pretty, but like the other characters, hers is only thinly drawn by Hodge.
Boyle tries to put a cosmic stamp on this travelogue by constantly "pulling back" his camera from the hedonism on the beach to views of Earth from the heavens. Such surrealistic moments, which Boyle used to great advantage in "Trainspotting", are empty, self-indulgent gestures here.
When he first lands in Bangkok, Richard says he is determined to "keep the mind open and suck in experience." That probably is the best way to view this film. But one has the uncomfortable feeling that these experiences are distilled from too many previous novels and films.
Technical credits are superb including Darius Khondji's freewheeling camera work and Angelo Badalamenti's music, as lush as the foliage and one of the film's major assets.
