In the continual reordering of the popular-music canon, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: Joni Mitchell’s complex, emotive, cerebral, ever-evolving music is ranking higher than ever.
Her 1971 album Blue landed in the Top Three on Rolling Stone‘s most recent ranking of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, and artists from Taylor Swift to Harry Styles to Mitski to Phoebe Bridgers have been dropping her name for years. And when Mitchell recently returned to the stage at the Newport Folk Festival for her first performance since a near-fatal 2015 aneurysm,...

Looking back at some of the strangest cameos in film and TV history, we were struck by how many of them were by musicians. It makes sense. After all, musicians are already out of place among actors on a TV or film set. What they bring to the table is different from what actors bring, in terms of star quality, charisma, self-expression and established personae. If you’re familiar with both the musician’s work and the characters in a movie or TV show (and the actors who play them...

Spinal Tap bassist Derek Smalls’ solo debut isn’t the first rock concept album devoted to the subject of getting old. “Smalls Change (Meditations Upon Ageing),” though, might be the first long player devoted primarily to the physical indignities that come toward the end of the long game — dental, arthritic, follicular and erectile dysfunctions all included. It’s a heavy metal borscht belt album, full of “Take my gall bladder, please” humor updated for rock ’n’ roll’s own sunset years, with the added pleasure of the world’s screaming-est guitarists to go with the screaming gout.
Speaking of impending death, Spinal Tap appears to have finally bought the sex farm. Some time after their last reunion tour in 2009, Michael McKean and Christopher Guest apparently decided 40 years was enough flogging for what began as a one-off TV sketch in 1979. It’s natural that Harry Shearer would be the one carrying...

Ehsaan Noorani, along with Shankar Mahadevan and Loy Mendonsa, affectionately called Sel, has created some of the greatest songs in the Hindi film musical canon. Think of one of your favorite films soundtracks or a song that is always on your playlist, and we can bet that one of them was done by Sel. Not only does Ehsaan work on Hindi film music, what you may or may not know is that when he is not in the studio composing, he is also an incredible guitar player whose first love is the Blues.
Now Ehsaan is putting on a new hat, that of judge, for a groundbreaking new reality show titled ‘The Stage’. Premiering on Saturday, October 10th at 9pm on Colors Infinity, the show, which also has Vishal Dadlani, Monica Dogra and Devraj Sayal joining Ehsaan on the judging panel, will find the best from among 20 talented artists, and...

So the other day a bunch of us were emailing back and forth about something and a tangent appeared in which we were ranking our favorite Steely Dan albums in order -- sticking to their '70s albums, their prime period.
Naturally I ended up writing a defense of my ranking. Doing so meant that I had to say unkind things about aspects of some tracks, which might seem like I'm denigrating them when, in fact, they all bring me pleasure. This is an exercise in relativity akin to the distasteful Howard Stern activity of pointing out the tiny flaws in some beautiful woman to explain why he, troglodyte that he is, finds her less than perfect. It is akin to pointing out Natalie Portman's mole. But if one is intent on ranking things, it must be done. And ultimately it all boils down to my highly personal tastes,...

December is a month that increasingly sees few releases of new albums, so the closer this list gets to the present day, the fewer albums of importance there are to discuss, and most of those are hip-hop albums.

Traffic: Mr. Fantasy Aka Heaven Is in Your Mind (Island)
Shortly after Steve Winwood quit the Spencer Davis Group (of which he was the lead singer and organist), he formed Traffic with some guys he'd jammed with at a club in Birmingham: guitarist/vocalist Dave Mason, saxophonist/flutist Chris Wood, and drummer/lyricist Jim Capaldi. After a couple of hit singles, they convened at a country cottage and put together the debut album by Traffic, titled Mr. Fantasy in their native country. By the time it was released, Mason had already quit.
The English and American editions were rather different. Not only did the U.S. LP (on United Artists) have...

Nashville, Tenn. (AP) — Federal prosecutors on Monday announced a deal to drop a criminal case against Gibson Guitar Corp. after the instrument maker acknowledged its importations of exotic wood violated environmental laws.
Nashville-based Gibson agreed to pay a $300,000 penalty, forfeit claims to about $262,000 worth of wood seized by federal agents and contribute $50,000 to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to promote the conservation of protected tree species.
"The agreement is fair and just in that it assesses serious penalties for Gibson's behavior while allowing Gibson to continue to focus on the business of making guitars," U.S. Attorney Jerry Martin said in a statement.
Gibson didn't immediately respond to messages left Monday seeking comment. The privately held company is considered one of the top makers of acoustic and electric guitars, including the iconic Les Paul introduced in 1952.
Gibson's decision to cooperate with the federal Lacey Act banning the import of...

I have to admit, every year I tune into the Grammys I mentally prepare myself for disappointment. Yet I still watch, hoping that the granddaddy of music awards shows will exceed my admittedly low expectations.
I'm happy to say that this year they've done it (for the most part).
Gimmicky performances, undeserving nominees and baffling winners - the usual Grammy mainstays - were all on display last night, yet for every bad egg (seriously Gaga?) there was a nice surprise that put a smile on my face.
The show began with a tribute to 18-time Grammy award winner, and Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. Jennifer Hudson, Martina McBride, Yolanda Adams, Christina Aguilera and Florence and the Machine's Florence Welch honored the ailed diva by singing a string of her hits.
Sadly, five powerful singers wailing away at once proved to be too much. It quickly turned into an oversinging competition,...

The Grammy Awards were handed out last night in L.A. -- and, in a surprise victory, Arcade Fire took home the coveted Album of the Year trophy. The band beat out favorites like Eminem and Lady Antebellum for the big award -- but it's not like those two went home empty handed. Lady Antebellum left with five trophies while Eminem nabbed two. Another shocking win last night was in the Best New Artist category, where Esperanza Spalding beat out more popular names like Justin Bieber and Florence and the Machine . There were plenty of awards to go around -- as Rihanna , Lady Gaga , Alicia Keys and Jay-z , John Legend and Miranda Lambert all grabbed a trophy or two as well. Check out the full list of winners below! Record of the year: "Need You Now" - Lady Antebellum Album of the year: "The Suburbs" - Arcade Fire Song of...

MusicWarren MendosaFrontman and guitarist, Blackstrat Blues 1Beatles - Revolver: A lot of people call Sgt. Pepper’s the finest album by The Beatles. But for me, it was Revolver that marked the band’s transition. From a cute mod band, they became the rock n’ roll foursome. In this album, they cover a variety of genres from hard rock to melodic ballads and even early electronica. I wouldn’t skip a single track. 2Steely Dan - Royal Scam: It’s a really nice album in terms of the production value. Larry Carlton’s guitar solos are a treat for any guitar player. It’s one of those albums ...

In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters.
