A recovering drug addict in Dublin tries to save his 12-step mentor in this well-intentioned but implausible drama about assisted dying
This movie from screenwriter Ailbhe Keogan and director Claire Dix is well intentioned – but it’s broad, and for me it does not really do justice to the seriousness of its euthanasia theme. There’s an odd, strained naivety here which goes right up to the silliness (and illegality) of its sentimental climactic scene on a lake.
Barry Ward (from Ken Loach’s Jimmy’s Hall) does his hyperactive utmost with the role of Leon, a recovering smack addict in Dublin and would-be musician who is devoted to his 12-step mentor Iver, a tough-talking old guy who saved him from drugs; this is a fierce performance from veteran player Liam Carney. But Iver is seriously unwell and Leon is astonished one morning when calling round to his flat to find...

To cross the Devers family is to earn retribution. This is a known fact to all in the rural Irish town of Glanbeigh. Some strangers arrive and overstep their bounds without knowing (as if getting involved with drug dealers was an act whose danger can be unknown), but most everyone knows everyone else’s name and where to find them. So when it’s Fannigan’s (Liam Carney) turn to “make good” on a transgression, he doesn’t try to run. He sits in his chair as Douglas “Arm” Armstrong (Cosmo Jarvis) enters and simply requests that it be “done quick.” Arm obliges without hesitation since he earns no pleasure from what’s become his job. Friend and “brother” Dympna Devers (Barry Keoghan) merely points him in the right direction and says, “Bite.”

"I've done it this time." Gravitas Ventures has released an official Us trailer for an indie drama titled Lost & Found, one of those films where various interconnected stories intertwine showing how we're all linked in some way. This one takes place at/around a lost & found office of an Irish train station. All the segments are inspired by true stories, and share a theme of something lost or found and characters that come in and out of each other’s lives. The ensemble cast of Lost & Found includes Liam O Mochain (who's also writer and director), Norma Sheahan, Brendan Conroy, Aoibhin Garrihy, Liam Carney, Mary McEvoy, and Sean Flanagan. This looks particularly cheap & cheesy, moreso than most of these interconnecting films. The title is as original as the humour in this portmanteau comedy set in a lost property office
A railway station lost property office in a sleepy town connects the seven interlocking and overlapping stories of this lightweight, cheaply made portmanteau comedy from Ireland. It’s written and directed by Liam O Mochain with the kind of inoffensive hot-water-bottle-laughs you wouldn’t think possible after Father Ted. Well, I say inoffensive, but one of the vignettes – about an uptight bridezilla whose sole character trait is her desperation to get married – is depressingly unfeminist.
The film begins promisingly with some deadpan comedy as gormless Daniel (played by the director) gets a job at the lost property office. His zero to minimal commitment to customer service is up there with Bernard from Black Books. Daniel crops up in the remaining stories, some of which, inevitably, work better than others. Liam Carney gives a subtle performance as Eddie,...

I’m back with a little more castings news for Starz’s hotly anticipated adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s fantasy-romance novel, Outlander. With every new actor or actress that joins the series, the clouds covering this world clear just a little bit more and I can appreciate the story that I’ve yet to delve into. The latest to join the cast are Aislin McGuckin and Liam Carney, both of whom have plenty of experience as stage actors, though McGuckin has done her fair share of television work as well. The two are welcome additions to the cast and I’m looking forward to seeing them join the MacKenzie clan.
According to Access Hollywood, McGuckin will be playing Letitia MacKenzie, the wife of Colum MacKenzie (Gary Lewis), the head of the MacKenzie clan. She’s described as being a strong woman in her own right, which I’m taking to...
