This year’s Palm Springs Film Festival saw not one but two international feature panel discussions hosted by The Hollywood Reporter. The first, moderated by THR’s own Kevin Cassidy, highlighted some of the most exciting non-English-language films of the year.
Matteo Garrone’s Io Capitano is Italy’s submission for the Oscar this year and follows two boys on a fairytale-like adventure across continents. The Monk and the Gun, Bhutan’s official selection, is directed by Pawo Choyning Dorji and tells the story of an American treasure hunter who crosses paths with a monk in the Bhutanese mountains. Morocco’s The Mother of All Lies, from Asmae El Moudir, sees the director imaginatively exploring her own family history in tandem with the history of her nation via clay figurines standing in for the real people in her life, who also appear onscreen.

The five international directors featured in the second of The Hollywood Reporter’s Palm Springs Film Festival panels helmed stories ranging from the expansive — tales of overthrowing dictatorships such as Santiago Mitre’s Argentina, 1985 — to intimate, tragic portraits of adolescent friendship, like in Lukas Dhont’s Close.
Some of these films are based on historical figures — like Marie Kreutzer’s Corsage, which sees Vicky Krieps stepping into the role of the free-spirited Empress Elisabeth of Austria. Davy Chou’s Return to Seoul draws from the personal experiences of the director’s close friend and her complicated relationship with her birth family. And multiple Oscar-winner Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Bardo, False Chronicles of a Handful of Truths weaves a complicated fiction out of semi-autobiographical musings.

You-sa mean-sa I-sa join-sa dark side? Could the most disliked character since the Ewoks actually become a Sith Lord? Well, that's what bad ass creature artist, Kevin Cassidy pondered with some sweet graphic sketches that you can see right up top! I've got to be honest, I like this version of Señor Binks a lot better than his Star Wars: The Phantom Menace version.…...

So often, film and film discussion focuses on the people in front of or at least immediately behind the camera, which makes it all the more refreshing when people turn the camera on lesser-exposed talents. The Hollywood Reporter did just that recently, when its International News Editor, Kevin Cassidy, sat down with five Hollywood composers as part of THR’s roundtable series. Hans Zimmer (“Interstellar”), John Powell (“How to Train Your Dragon 2”), Marco Beltrami (“The Homesman”), Trent Reznor (“Gone Girl”), and Danny Elfman (“Big Eyes”) gathered to talk about their year in film, as well as their respective approaches to composing scores for modern cinema. With two Oscars, another 20 Academy Award nominations, and countless other awards between them, the quintet is undeniably one of true heavyweights. Beltrami, who might be one of the least recognizable among the group but had eight credits in 2014 alone, offers a fascinating look into...

A new Luigi-themed Dlc pack will be released later this year for New Super Mario Bros. U for the Wii U. The short, fan-made video is a tribute to the "Legend of Zelda" hero's first boss fight.
According to creator Phil Summers over at Shamoozle, "Link's Triumph" was the result of a year of hard work for the solo animator. "The goal was to show how an inexperienced and ill equipped Link would go about fumbling through this situation," Summers explains, "and perhaps gaining a bit of confidence along the way."
The video was made with the help of composer Joe Moscareillo, with and assist from GoNintendo's Kevin Cassidy.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter's Kevin Cassidy, The Muppets director James Bobin responded to Eric Bolling's charges that the film is anti-capitalist. "It's a very strange turn of events to hear a question like that," Bobin exclaimed. "Cable news is 24 hours long so you have to fill it up with something. No, the Muppets are not communist."...

Studios are pumping out TV-DVD packages faster, and more furiously, than ever. And as the volume increases, the packages themselves are getting thinner so there's room for more at retail. As of May 20, 207 multidisc TV series have come to market this year, 55.6% more than at this same point last year, according to the DVD Release Report, a weekly industry tip sheet. Virtually no Tuesday street date goes by without a handful of complete-season TV sets arriving in stores. And even obscure, short-lived series like Ned and Stacey are being resurrected on DVD. Kevin Cassidy, executive vp sales and product at Tower Records and Video, credits escalating consumer demand for the rush but throws out some cautionary words. "It's easy for the studios to continue at this pace, but it may be self-defeating," he said. "At what point do you inhibit sales of initial season sets? Why don't those get a price reduction or rebate when the newer seasons are released? How many titles is enough in this category?" Gord Lacey, who operates the TVShowsOnDVD.com Web site, said: "I think it's starting to get a little strained. There are 17 season sets being released on June 7, and consumers are going to have to pick and choose. Some visitors to my site have even begun asking why the studios are loading certain dates."...
