After receiving over 10,000 applications in their nationwide search for a new guitarist, the Smashing Pumpkins revealed Friday the newest member of their band: Social media-famous guitarist Kiki Wong.
In January, the Pumpkins announced an open audition to fill the vacancy left by departing guitarist Jeff Schroeder, who had a 16-year tenure with Billy Corgan and company. Just two weeks later, the band said they received so many applications that it required “eight people working full-time to review each and every one.”

Smashing Pumpkins have named Kiki Wong as their new touring guitarist.
Following the departure of longtime guitarist Jeff Schroeder last October, frontman Billy Corgan put out an open call for his replacement. The band received more than 10,000 applicants, which Corgan then whittled down to a group of finalists who auditioned in-person in Los Angeles last month. He settled on Wong, a veteran guitarist who has performed with the likes of Taylor Swift, Usher, and Bret Michaels, as well as with rock bands Nylon Pink, Hellfire Heart, and currently, Vigil of War.

“Reviewing the work of these incredible musicians was a herculean, albeit worthy effort,” Corgan said in a statement. “First off, I really want to thank everyone who submitted materials for consideration. It wasn’t an easy decision with how much great guitar playing we were lucky enough to hear and see over the past few months.

The Smashing Pumpkins’ open call for a new guitarist has been a… smashing success. In a social media statement, the current trio of Billy Corgan, James Iha, and Jimmy Chamberlin announced they’ve received upwards of 10,000 applications for the gig.
“The band has received over 10,000 submissions for the position of additional guitarist,” Smashing Pumpkins wrote. “Currently, there are 8 people working full-time to review each and every one.”
This past October, the Pumpkins’ longtime guitarist Jeff Schroeder announced he was leaving the group after over 15 years. “I’ve decided to leave the band to make some space to explore a slightly different path,” he wrote at the time.
Smashing Pumpkins’ current lineup features Corgan on vocals/guitar, Iha on guitar, and Chamberlin on drums, along with touring bassist Jack Bates and multi-instrumentalist Katie Cole.

In a corresponding interview, Corgan described himself as, “a Disney mark… I collect old DisneyLand items. I have items as far back as opening day, 1955. ”
“When they called me to come play Disney, I was like, ‘Whatever you need,'” Corgan continued. “I am very happy to be here, we come here all the time with our family.”

Smashing Pumpkins’ singer/guitarist Billy Corgan, wearing black makeup and black boots, and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin rocked out at Pnc Music Pavilion on Tuesday night in Charlotte, North Carolina. The rock band is currently on a North American tour with stops coming next in Holmdel, N.J., Wantagh, N.Y., Gilford, N.H., and Toronto.
“James, I think they like the bleak new wave better than the wrestling,” Corgan said after a Jame Iha solo, a reference to opening talent from the National Wrestling Alliance.

Say what you like about Billy Corgan–and, let’s be honest, you could say quite a bit– you’ve gotta give the man props for his tireless work ethic and relentless creative energy. Even while putting the finishing touches on Cyr, the Smashing Pumpkins’ 20-song 2020 release, Corgan was already deep into crafting Atum: A Rock Opera in Three Acts, a 33-song trilogy he described as a sequel to 1995’s Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and 2000’s Machina/The Machines of God. However tortured Corgan may seem at times,...

Smashing Pumpkins are one of the most prolific bands around — they just released Atum, a 33-track rock opera — but they have even more music we haven’t heard. During a takeover of SiriusXM’s Lithium, drummer Jimmy Chamberlin revealed that the band recorded both a psychedelic album and a Christmas album during the Covid-19 shutdown that no one’s heard.
“Over the pandemic, I have a studio at my house,” Chamberlin said. “Billy has a studio at his house. We live 20 minutes away. We’re not neighbors, but we’re really close to each other. We can get to each other’s houses very quickly. We recorded close to 80 songs over the pandemic.”
Chamberlin continued, “So we did the Cyr record. We had a psychedelic record that we had on a back burner that we never got to. We recorded that. We did a Christmas record that we’d never gotten to,...

Before Nevermind, Ten, Badmotorfinger, or Dirt, there was Gish. And while it may be a stretch to say that Smashing Pumpkins’ 1991 debut LP was the first album of the alternative rock revolution (Jane’s Addiction, Pixies, Nirvana, and Mudhoney might have something to say about that), it was an enormous landmark nonetheless. At a time when most indie albums failed to reach many fans outside of an act’s small cult, Gish entered the Billboard 200, topped the Cmj chart, and connected in territories as far away as New Zealand and Australia.

Billy Corgan tried fan service on the Smashing Pumpkins’ last album, 2018’s Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 — which saw the reunion of three-quarters of the band’s grunge glory-days lineup — but he must have decided half-hearted nostalgia wasn’t worth the hassle after the record got a tepid response.
The Pumpkins’ latest, Cyr, features the same lineup as Shiny and Oh So Bright, but it feels more like a Corgan solo album. The principal Pumpkin produced the record himself and wrote all of its songs, which the band played mostly on synthesizers.

Taking to the late-night show’s outdoor stage, Billy Corgan and company – including returning original members guitarist James Iha and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin – first delivered a take on their new album’s “Silvery Sometimes (Ghosts)” before following that up with the orchestral “Knights of Malta.

Twenty-five years later, the earth is still reeling from the spectacle of Smashing Pumpkins’ early Nineties triumph, a keening feedback-drenched rainbow that melded dream-pop gauze and arena rock bluster, Joy Division emotions and Cheap Trick aspirations. Generations of zeros-turned-heroes followed after 1993’s Technicolor guitar-army bubblegum Siamese Dream, 1995’s bloated but pointed teenage symphony to angst Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and even 1998’s less-heralded techno-gloomster Adore. You can still hear them in arena spaceboys like Muse and 30 Seconds to Mars, alterna-poppers like Tame Impala, Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Grimes,...

The Smashing Pumpkins unveiled a rumbling new rocker, “Knights of Malta,” from their upcoming album Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun, out November 16th via Billy Corgan’s label, Martha’s Music.
“Knights of Malta” finds the Pumpkins embracing their orchestral leanings yet again, interweaving the chug of drums, guitar and bass with piano, strings and choral vocals. Corgan gives his lyrics a mystic edge – “A serpent for your fist/ And a scarab for your mouth” – as he puts a vivid spin on...

The Smashing Pumpkins recruited Sugar Ray frontman Mark McGrath – a bizarre fixture on the band’s recent tour with his pre-filmed introductions – for their playfully macabre “Silvery Sometimes (Ghosts)” video. The singer plays radio DJ Jackie Cherry, who hosts the band for a Halloween haunted house promotion.
“It’s all for charity – and some good-old spooky fun,” McGrath says, introducing the Smashing Pumpkins – Billy Corgan, James Iha, Jimmy Chamberlin and Jeff Schroeder – to a small group of rabid fans wearing “Zero” T-shirts. The band’s aim, he says, is to...

Smashing Pumpkins should have been in high spirits heading into the making of their second LP. But according to Billy Corgan, the lead-up to Siamese Dream was one of the darkest chapters in the band’s history. “We were on tour, selling out everywhere we go,” the singer told Rolling Stone in 1995 of the period following their 1991 debut, Gish. “Everything went cool, fine, dandy. Suddenly, boom: Nirvana. We went from being seen as future stars almost to has-beens, people saying, ‘Well, if you were so good, this would have happened to you.

On Metric‘s new song “Dark Saturday,” singer Emily Haines explores the disconnect between the spoiled and the self-made.
“I meet her in the world below/ She’s a tourist of the world beneath,” she sings over surging distortion and buzzing synths. “I said ‘Everything, I’ve built from nothing/ She said ‘I’m so rich, everything’s free.'”

Smashing Pumpkins opened their reunion tour Thursday in Glendale, Arizona, where the band performed a 31-song setlist stocked with hits, “classic lineup”-era favorites and a surprise cover of Led Zeppelin‘s “Stairway to Heaven.”

When The Smashing Pumpkins hit the road on their Shiny And Oh So Bright Tour this July, it will mark 30 years since the band formed in Chicago. They plan to include music from their beginning through 2000, when the original group broke up due to a slew of drug issues, record sale declines, and band member squabbles. The original Pumpkins included band founder Billy Corgan, James Iha on guitar, bass guitarist D’arcy Wretzky, and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin. Over the years, The Pumpkins have experienced numerous changes in personnel, and that hasn’t always bode well with fans of their heavily-layered

Billy Corgan has said that he will never reunite the original Smashing Pumpkins. The lineup on the band's first album Gish featured Corgan alongside drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, guitarist James Iha and bassist D'arcy Wretzky. Asked if the classic lineup of the group would ever return, Corgan told Rolling Stone: "No. That's just one of those things that are never going to happen. If you don't see somebody for a while, there's the old thing, 'Absence makes the heart grow fonder'. Well, we haven't had absence. "The things that have happened between us in the interim haven't been good. There's been lawsuits and lots of stupid stuff. It's only made it worse. If it was bad before, it's really bad now." He continued: "Jimmy and I aren't enemies - he's just off doing what he wants (more)...

It's a little bit ironic that Billy Corgan, perhaps the gloomiest Gus of the alternative rock era, celebrates his birthday on a day typically reserved for unbridled celebration. Corgan turns 44 years old on this St. Patrick's Day, so celebrate with a double-frosted cupcake and some green streamers.
Corgan is best known as the frontman and mastermind behind Smashing Pumpkins, one of the definitive alternative rock bands from the '90s. Founded in Chicago, the Pumpkins first got some attention with their debut album Gish (which was produced by Butch Vig only a few months before he twiddled the knobs for Nirvana's classic Nevermind). The Pumpkins went from underground favorites to mainstream juggernauts with Siamese Dream, which contained signature hits like "Cherub Rock," "Disarm" and "Today," all of which became instant radio staples and have scarcely left heavy rotation since.

It hasn’t been easy being a Billy Corgan fan lately, what with all the obnoxious quotes (the recent one dissing Pavement via Twitter was particularly painful), the resurrection of the Smashing Pumpkins name with a bunch of hired guns, and 2007’s overcooked, overblown, ultimately mediocre Zeitgeist. Replacing the only other original member (drummer Jimmy Chamberlin) with a kid who was a year old when Gish came out, then announcing that the band’s next album would be a 44-song monster doled out piece by piece seemed to be the final straws, but something funny happened on the way ...

If you spot Billy Corgan today (and it's hard to miss him considering his height), be sure to pat him on the back and give him a Hallmark card, because the Smashing Pumpkins mastermind celebrates his birthday on March 17. He is now 43 years old.
A native of Chicago (he's a diehard Cubs fan), Corgan founded the Smashing Pumpkins in 1988. Though the early work was spartan (the Pumpkins played a handful of shows accompanied by a drum machine because they hadn't yet hired skinsman Jimmy Chamberlin) but the group quickly established themselves as a force on the alternative rock scene in the early 1990s.
Combining elements of prog, punk, classic rock and industrial music, the Smashing Pumpkins' first three albums — 1991's Gish, 1993's Siamese Dream and 1995's Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness — represent perhaps the greatest trifecta in rock history. In those albums, Corgan proved himself to be both a brilliant and prolific songwriter,...

Rocker Billy Corgan has launched a new open audition process to find a new bassist and keyboard player for The Smashing Pumpkins. Corgan has been forced to replace bassist Ginger Pooley after she quit the band last week to concentrate on motherhood. In the meantime, The Electric Prunes' star Mark Tulin will fill in.
Corgan launched an audition process to find his new drummer Mike Byrne in 2009 after longtime collaborator Jimmy Chamberlin quit the new-look Pumpkins. Pooley, who toured with Corgan and the band in 2007 and 2008, says, "With sorrow and yet with much thankfulness for the opportunity to have played in the Pumpkins, I am sad to say that I can no longer tour with the Pumpkins."
"I've been blessed beyond belief over the past few years through playing with the Pumpkins, (but) my priority now is to keep our little family unit together, which includes my husband and my baby.
