The late Benny Chan directed “The White Storm” back in 2013 starring Lau Ching Wan, Louis Koo and Nick Cheung. In “The White Storm 2: Drug Lords” (2019) which starred Andy Lau and Louis Koo, Herman Yau took over as director. Now in 2023, Yau is back in this in-title-only third installment again featuring Koo, Lau Ching Wan and Aaran Kwok, the newcomer to the series. All these actors play different characters altogether but the themes of war against drugs, royalty and brotherhood are still there but told in a new storyline.

Benny Chan’s A Moment of Romance swiftly establishes the narrow perimeter of the world that triad member Wah Dee (Andy Lau) inhabits. Though Dee cuts a profile of louche cool in his denim jackets and sleek motorcycle, the gangster getaway driver moves through the emptiest and least exotic realms of the criminal underworld. His stomping grounds generally consist of rundown buildings and day-rate hotels where he works and sleeps, and his only visible means of letting off steam consists of heading to a nearby quarry to watch a kind of demolition derby with all the other fast-living losers who occupy the bottom rungs of triad life. He treats his bosses with the usual differences demanded by organized crime’s rigid power structures, and they in turn speak to him as little more than an indentured servant.

When it comes to big-budget productions made in Hong Kong, few could hold a candle to director Benny Chan whose resume includes such titles like “Rob-b-Hood”, “New Police Story” and “Raging Fire”, his last work before his death. As he was approached to do a remake of David R. Ellis' action-thriller “Cellular”, Chan did not have to think twice about the proposition since it gave him the chance to put the original premise within the Hong Kong culture, and therefore making his version much more than a mere copy as you might assume as first glance. “Connected”, which is currently streaming on Netflix, includes the ingredients typical for the kind of action thriller Chan is known for, as well as some impressive stunt work and great performances, especially leading man Louis Koo playing an unlikely hero.

I'm slightly ashamed to say I only saw “A Moment of Romance” for the first time recently, but sometimes, one viewing will show you that classics are classics for a reason. Gratefully, I was able to watch Benny Chan's Hong Kong masterpiece on the big screen at the Far East Film Festival, where my mentors insisted it would blow me away. Rarely does this phrase find a footing in me as someone who tends to dwell on slow-moving, melancholic queer cinema, but I'm happy to admit that they were correct.
The story itself is simple: a wealthy young Hong Kong heiress, Jo-Jo (Jacklyn Wu) falls in love with a toughened-by-the-streets triad member, Wah Dee (Andy Lau). Drawn to each other but unwilling to get too close for fear of endangering the other, they become the epitome of star-crossed lovers. Wah Dee and Jo-Jo quickly learn that the world doesn't tolerate their romance,...

By 2004, Jackie Chan thought that it was time to reboot the “Police Story” series, which eventually led to the 5th installment in the franchise, with him playing not Chan Ka-kui anymore, but Inspector Chan Kwok-wing. The most important difference with the previous installments, however, is that “New Police Story” is essentially a drama, almost completely leaving the comedic premises of the previous series to the background.

The movie begins with Inspector Chan being a total mess, completely drunk, with even the taxi drivers avoiding him. Jacky Cheung has been absent from the silver screen for a while now, with his last leading role coming in 2016 with “Heaven in the Dark” and his last action film coming a year before that with “Helios”. On the other hand, if there's one thing the late, great Benny Chan's swansong “Raging Fire” did, it rekindled Nicholas Tse's interest in action films. Both Cheung and Tse are back with action and will be seen in Herman Yau's upcoming “Customs Frontline”.
Plot details are still under wraps but the trailer promises an exciting narrative revolving around illegal arms smuggling that promises fists, guns and lots of explosives.
The stacked star-cast also includes Francis Ng, Karena Lam and Cya Liu. No official release date has been announced yet but it can be expected to release in the 2nd half of 2023.

While Donnie Yen is about to turn 60 and is showing no signs of slowing down — in career or fight speed, Jackie Chan is nearing 70 and doesn’t look interested in throwing in the towel as well. The action legend had once said his last all-out action movie was to be 2012’s Chinese Zodiac, the third film in the Armour of God series. However, he has since made a smattering of movies with some of his signature style. Chan recently announced he would be doing a new Rush Hour with Chris Tucker. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Chan is officially launching the sequel to the 2004 reboot of his famous Police Story series, New Police Story.
Jackie appeared at the Filmart market alongside his New Police Story co-star Nicolas Tse as the Chinese movie studio Emperor Motion Pictures announced their slate for 2023. The duo made an appearance to help launch the sequel to their 2004 film.

“Anita,” the biopic of the late Canto-pop queen Anita Mui, led the race of the 40th Hong Kong Film Awards on Sunday night with five awards, including recognitions for the film’s actors and technical achievements. But the best film and best director awards went to action thriller “Raging Fire” directed by the late Benny Chan.
Sunday’s event, which was postponed from its original schedule in April, was the first in-person edition of the awards ceremony after two years of Covid hiatus — the 2020 edition was held online and 2021 was suspended.
The number of films released in Hong Kong has dramatically dropped over the past years as cinemas were forced to close doors for prolonged periods under the government’s Covid measures. As a result, this year’s event was a double edition taking in films released in both 2020 and 2021.

With adrenaline-pumping action, Nicholas Tse’s vengeful villain cuts an almost tragic figure
The final film from Hong Kong maverick Benny Chan, who sadly died during post-production, this has all the genre pleasures of an old school bad cop v good cop flick. Honest, stoic cop Bong (Donnie Yen) is about to capture a longtime criminal nemesis when, to his horror, a masked gang annihilate his foe along with a dozen other colleagues. Even more shocking, Bong soon discovers that the leader of this savage ambush – spectacularly shot at an abandoned shopping mall – is none other than Ngo (Nicholas Tse), a former comrade-in-arms whom he sent to jail for misconduct.

“Free Guy” retained its lead of the China box office for the third weekend in a row, and has now surpassed “Tenet” in local sales.
It brought in $12.4 million on a rare weekend with three non-Chinese language titles in the top five, according to Maoyan figures.
China’s box office has been dismal all summer and the slump continued this week with, once again, only five films that made over $1 million. Nevertheless, authorities have chosen to keep out top Hollywood moneymakers like “Shang-Chi” and let major blockbusters like “Dune” and “No Time to Die” languish in limbo without release dates.
“Free Guy” was one of the rare summer movies that released only in theaters stateside, where it has just surpassed the $100 million mark. In China, its cume is now up to $76.5 million, according to Maoyan. China sales for “Free Guy” generated $1.7 million in box office receipts for Imax, bringing the...

Documentaries about a da Vinci and a dictator, a Pablo Larraín drama with Gael Garcia Bernal, a Donnie Yen martial arts thriller by the late Benny Chan, and Coda — Apple’s record-busting Sundance acquisition — make specialty bows this weekend as the arthouse sector fights through a slow reopening.
“The market is still finding a balance right now,” said Kyle Westphal, theatrical sales manager for Music Box Films (and programming associate for Chicago’s Music Box Theatre). The distributor debuts Larraín’s Ema in 11 theaters in nine markets with plans to expand thereafter — to maybe another 20, but it’s hard to say. “The normal [criteria] like what’s your opening per-screen average right now, those are all upside down,” Westphal tells Deadline.
He said a strong perf by Anthony Bourdain doc Roadrunner (Focus Features) and The Green Knight (A24) “doing as well as it has over the past few weeks, are good signs.

Raging Fire is a contemporary Hong Kong Chinese martial arts crime flick that’s a perfect vehicle for its two male leads – Donnie Yen and Nicholas Tse. Yen plays the good cop. Tse is his former good-cop buddy, who has become really good at being really bad for reasons we learn along the way. Many of these films are thrown together with a muddled plot that exists only to set up their action sequences. Here we have a shining exception, as main characters and their backstories are fleshed out to fine advantage, making for a production that satisfies the brain as well as fulfilling the desired adrenaline quota.
Yen has nearly 80 acting credits and handful of directing stints, including fight-scene choreography. He comes by his art honestly, as the son of a martial arts master, trained from childhood in multiple disciplines.

Donnie Yen stars in Raging Fire, the Hong Kong/Chinese actioner that’s hitting domestic cinemas on Friday (via Well Go USA) as it nears $100M at the China box office. Directed by the late Benny Chan, it introduces us to Yen’s character, Shan, as a principled cop who’s protective of his pregnant wife (who rarely speaks). Shan is in pole position for his domestic idyll to be shattered by corrupt colleagues who are more interested in cash from criminals than following the law. When Shan refuses to take a bribe from a powerful source, the bodies start piling up in a series of set pieces that dominate this action-packed but clichéd thriller.

The list of major Hollywood tentpoles that have released in the U.S. in the past month but not yet fixed a China release date is growing ever longer — an issue of significant concern to industry players on both sides of the Pacific.

After a sting operation goes disastrously awry, Shan finds himself pitted against Ngo (Nicholas Tse), a former protégé who has turned criminal mastermind and is out for revenge. Nothing, it seems, can stop him, including his former mentor.

Donnie Yen-starring action thriller “Raging Fire” roared to the top this weekend in China with a $37.2 million opening, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway, but its sales were far from enough to revive China’s slumping ticket sales.
Yen was last seen on Chinese screens last year in Disney’s “Mulan,” which performed worse than expected. But he proved that he remains enough of a box office draw to pull his film to the top, despite an otherwise slow weekend.
“Raging Fire” is the final movie from iconic “White Storm” helmer Benny Chan, who died last summer. It will soon blaze through to North America, where it is distributed by Well Go USA Entertainment and will hit screens on Aug. 13 after an outing as the centerpiece selection of the New York Asian Film Festival.
Second this weekend was youth romantic drama “Upcoming Summer,” a new release from Huayi Brothers that debuted to $20.6 million.
