In 1967, Shaw Brothers released The One-Armed Swordsman, starring Jimmy Wang Yu and directed by Chang Chen. It became an instant classic wuxia movie overnight and in 1995, we have this updated version, wonderfully directed by Tsui Hark.
The story is pretty much the same, an orphaned handicap young man seeking revenge after he trained himself into a master swordsman. However, in the capable hands of Tsui Hark, the movie has turned into an even more violent, moody tale of revenge masterpiece.
“The Blade” stars Vincent Zhao as Ding On, an orphan who works and lives in a saber making factory, and his best mate is Iron Head, played here by Moses Chan. In fact, the factory owner’s daughter, Ling (plays by Song Lei) has a crash on both of them and she also narrates the whole movie. One day, after Ding On finds out that Fei Lung,...

Coming only two months after the release of the first film in the series, Young and Dangerous 2 actually improves on its predecessor. Young and Dangerous 2 focus more on the complexities of gang life, and is decidedly less comic in tone than the first entry in the series. Initially the main focus of the film is Chicken (Jordan Chan), and his adventures in Taiwan. Viewers will remember that in the first movie, Chicken had to flee Hong Kong and ended up in Taiwan. By the climax of the film he had returned as a gang boss in his own right, and backed up his friend Chan Ho Nam (Ekin Cheng) in the films finale. The first 40 minutes or so of Young and Dangerous...

It’s that time again, mere mortals! Time to travel to a world in which superheroes exist, Agent Coulson is the funniest man alive, and “hacktivist” is a word. Let’s get to business.
Tonight’s episode of S.H.I.E.L.D. started in Hong Kong, where we met an average street performer. The Triads are back in “Young and Dangerous: Reloaded”, which sees producers Wong Jing and Manfred Wong returning to the hugely popular series following the fortunes of good looking gang upstarts. Though their quality might have been variable, the original films really were for many one of the standouts of 1990s Hong Kong genre cinema, the first instalment back in 1996 having been directed by Andrew Lau (“Infernal Affairs”) and having helped skyrocket the career of Ekin Cheng, along with co-stars Jordan Chan, Francis Ng, Gigi Lai and Simon Yam. And so, it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that more than 15 years and some 10 (at last count) sequels and spin-offs later, a reboot now arrives, directed by Daniel Chan, who recently also dabbled with gang action in “Triad”, attempting to revisit the formula for a new generation. Taking on the all-important lead role is Him Law (“Hong Kong...
