Bambai Meri Jaan is creating waves by showcasing stories that may be familiar to many of us. What makes this ten-episode-long show different from the usual fare we have watched on this subject over the years is the treatment of the story and the screenplay. This story is extensively covered in pieces of media like books, case studies, and articles. There are plenty of Hindi films as well that were either successful in being accurate portrayals of that era or they were just over-the-top dramatization, which in most cases did not give the audience the right picture to understand the nexus and the leaders.
Bambai Meri Jaan is based on the bestselling book ‘Dongri to Dubai’ written by India’s top investigative journalist S. Hussain Zaidi. ‘Dongri to Dubai’ has been the source material for many movies made in the gangster drama genre. What makes them less engaging than Shujaat Saudagar...

Netflix released lists of its most popular content in Japan, Korea, India and Malaysia on Monday, showing that a mix of American shows and local language content best captured hearts and eyeballs in Asia this year — with Michael Bay’s “6 Underground” the only title that proved a top hit in all territories.
Netflix said the most-watched lists had been made by tallying the number of accounts that had streamed at least two minutes of the content in question during its first 28 days on the platform in 2019.
In Japan, five out of ten of the top ten works of the year are Netflix originals. Three are animated, while a fourth is a live-action adaptation of an anime. The top-viewed content was the semi-biographical live-action Japanese-language series “The Naked Director,” which chronicles Japan’s porn industry in the 1980s through the story of real-life, controversial adult video director Toru Muranishi, played by Takayuki Yamada.

While theatrical film and television are heavily regulated in India, the country currently does not have any official guidelines for the streaming space, which is expected to be worth $5 billion by 2023, according to a report by Boston Consulting Group.
Local Indian streaming services ErosNow, Zee5, Arre and Alt Balaji have signed onto this code of conduct as well. Amazon Prime Video is not among the signers. The company did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

Any TV series that begins with a dog falling from the height of a skyscraper and lingers on the aftermath of the impact at ground level is not going to be one marked by subtlety. NetflixThe thriller is also a poignant commentary on the equalizing power of hatred, perhaps the only emotion that is truly “secular” in India.Saraswati DatarGanesh, the remover of obstacles. The reigning deity of Mumbai, he is an imperfect being who can give us what we desperately seek. Quite like gangster Ganesh Gaitonde (Nawazzudin Siddiqui) who brings salvation to beleaguered cop Sartaj Singh (Saif Ali Khan), appearing on his phone with a prophecy of doom, and the promise that his life is going to change. Netflix’s first Indian original series, Sacred Games, is an adaptation of the novel by acclaimed writer Vikram Chandra. Shot as a neo-noir thriller over 8 episodes, executive producer Vikramaditya Motwane and writers Varun Grover, Smita Singh and Vasant Nath have adapted the 900-page book into a gripping web of religion, politics, conspiracy and corruption that entangles you slowly but surely. Ganesh Gaitonde, notorious gangster and leader of the G gang returns mysteriously after 15 years, and contacts a defeated Sartaj Singh, who has been sidelined by his department. Gaitonde’s phone call gives him the ray of hope he was looking for, and he jumps headlong into the rabbit hole, ironically risking his job to do it right. Along the way, he finds an ally in Raw agent Anjali Mathur (Radhika Apte), and powerful enemies who include the Home Minister, retired gang members, thumb chopping psychopaths and his fellow police officers. While the series begins in the present day, the narrative soon branches into two distinct timelines. Anurag Kashyap directs the rise of Ganesh Gaitonde as he narrates his journey from Maharashtra’s hinterlands to becoming a mobster, while Motwane directs the present doomsday thread, taking us into the lonely world of Sartaj Singh who finds purpose in deciphering Gaitonde’s tip-off about a catastrophe in 25 days. Though there is a clock ticking, the exposition is luxuriously paced, setting up all the major players in the game and laying out their connections without any spoilers. The pace picks up soon enough, and as the dots join and the mystery unravels, politicians, police officers and starlets struggle to keep their immunity from his dark legacy. Gaitonde’s rise from the garbage dump to the King of Gopalmath serves as a definitive recap of how religion and politics became mutually satisfied bedfellows in India. He narrates his story in the context of landmark events like the Shah Bano case, Babri Masjid demolition, Mumbai bomb blasts and the rise of the Hindu right wing in the country, recalling how each of these events affected his life, his gang, and his ‘karmabhoomi’ Mumbai. There are even mentions of the partition and the 26/11 terror attacks, creating a timeline of intolerance and terror that continues to add new dates to its tab. Nawazzudin Siddiqui, no stranger to playing a gangster, is reliably brilliant, surrendering completely to Gaitonde’s methods, madness and morals. Drugs, illicit liquor, extortion, murder; his life is a series of wrongdoings, yet his deep understanding of religion’s toxicity is surprisingly wise. “Going god’s way clears all the pathways,” he quips, summarizing how religious fault lines are created and nurtured by those who build careers on conflict. Siddiqui humanizes the man, telling his story with sensitivity, humour and no judgement. Complementing him every step of the way is Saif Ali Khan in fabulous form after a long time. Anxious, lonely, bitter but still sincere, Sartaj Singh is perhaps the most complex character Khan has portrayed in his career. One of the only Sikhs in the Mumbai police, Sartaj is not only in religious minority, but also solitary in his attempts at doing his job with honesty. Khan’s eyes are tired, his body seems stuffed into and suffocated in the police uniform and his silences are as heart-wrenching as his screaming meltdown in his dank apartment. Sartaj’s only support is his right-hand man Constable Katekar, played brilliantly by Jitendra Joshi, who picks up his calls and lifts his spirits at all odd hours. There is little light in his house and life, literal or otherwise, and while Motwane wants us to root for him, he never tries to glorify or ennoble him. Khan and Siddiqui are supported by a perfectly cast group of powerful actors who get into the skin of their characters effortlessly. Particularly impressive are Neeraj Kabi as Khan’s morally defunct boss Parulkar, Shalini Vatsa as Kanta Bai, Gaitonde’s voice of reason, Kubra Sait as his first love Kuckoo, Rajshri Deshpande as Subhadra and Jatin Sarna and Gaitonde’s sidekick Bunty. The series gives each of the supporting characters well-defined arcs and motives that organically find common ground or clash violently to take the story forward. Special credit must be given to the cinematographers and art direction unit who convincingly recreate the journey of Bombay to Mumbai, choosing real largely outdoor locations over stereotypical beauty shots that are authentic to a story that exposes the fragility and fetid nature of the city; the garbage from which castles rise, as Gaitonde says. Crisply edited by Aarti Bajaj and with a haunting background score, Sacred Games is a brilliant first production to emerge from India, proving that we are ready to take our content to a global scale. While it’s essentially a cat and mouse thriller, Sacred Games is also a poignant commentary on the equalizing power of hatred, perhaps the only emotion that is truly “secular” in India. It questions why we associate ourselves so deeply with our religious identity, why we place allegiance to an invisible god over our intuitive humanity, and why inspite of so many years of betrayal and bloodshed we just can’t seem to kick our addiction to our God, who as a character says, got sick of us long ago. This Friday, July 6th, Netflix launches its most ambitious project out of India to date, the Anurag Kashyap & Vikramaditya Motwane directed miniseries Sacred Games, based on the hit novel by Vikram Chandra. The company has had a strong foothold in India since it's global launch in January of 2016, acquiring major Bollywood blockbusters, making deals with big production houses like Shah Rukh Khan & Gauri Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment (home of many Srk hits from the last two decades), scouring the festival circuit for independent favorites, and adding favorites from regional film industries, particularly the Kerala based Malayalam language industry. In addition to these acquisitions, Netflix has recently begun commissioning original content. They have experimented with stand up specials from comedians like Vir Das...

I first picked up Vikram Chandra’s massive tome Sacred Games at my local bookshop, and from the very first pages, I knew I wanted to see it adapted for the screen. I could never figure out, though, quite how that could happen – the novel was sweeping, layered, intricate, and it seemed to me that the challenges of adapting it might be beyond the scope of, say, a film. Since the book’s publication we’ve seen the rise of Netflix as a significant player in the world of content creation for online streaming, and the news that Sacred Games would be adapted as a Netflix Original Series – the first Indian Netflix Original – seemed to be the perfect fit for this material. A Netflix adaptation would give the time and the space – and the creative freedom – to tell the story of gangster Ganesh Gaitonde and policeman Sartaj Singh in a...

In case you weren't already aware, a ton of new shows are coming out this Summer. While we can't guarantee you'll fall in love with all of them, we have a feeling you won't be able to resist Sacred Games, an upcoming crime drama coming to Netflix. The first trailer dropped on May 4, and from the looks of things, there's going to be plenty of twists, turns, and drama to keep us entertained.
The eight-episode Indian series has been adapted from Vikram Chandra's award-winning 2006 novel of the same name, and revolves around a prickly cop named Sartaj Singh (Saif Ali Khan) working in Mumbai. When he's tipped off about the location of notorious crime lord Ganesh Gaitonde (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), their lives begin to collide in unexpected (and shockingly violent) ways. The story explores the emotionally charged worlds of organized crime and politics in contemporary India, all of which hinge around major corruption.

Anurag Kashyap is India's most visible contemporary filmmaker in the west, and that is with good reason. His international breakout film, Gangs of Wasseypur was a smash at the Cannes Director's Fortnight in 2012, and he's continued making excellent cinema since. Of his last four features since 2012, Ugly, Bombay Velvet, Raman Raghav 2.0, and Mukkabaaz, three have been critical hits, and he is one of the most controversial filmmakers in that country. This year sees Kashyap and his team at Phantom Films partnering with Netflix to release a serialized adaptation of Vikram Chandra's hit novel, Sacred Games. This marks Kashyap's first big foray into directing for the small screen, but it doesn't look like he's going to lose any of his punch by scaling...

If you want to get into Indian films and TV but don’t know how, here are some of the best online offerings
For many of us, Bollywood cinema tends to be the invisible elephant of the UK film market. Vast in output and popularity alike, it’s nonetheless a difficult scene for dilettantes to keep pace with. Media coverage and criticism is scarce, not least because mainstream Indian releases are rarely screened for the press – or perhaps this cause and effect should be reversed – and breakout crossover hits are rare. That makes simply knowing what to see tricky before matters of access come to the fore. With marketing materials as one’s principal guide, one crystal-encrusted musical or strutting street-war thriller looks much like another.
The world of streaming, then, is an ideal way in for the Bollycurious. It may not make the mass of material much more critically navigable,...

Exclusive: In what has become a network tradition, AMC held its pilot script showcase last week. The annual event, nicknamed by agents and producers “bake-off,” once again featured six scripts identified by AMC brass as the strongest pilot contenders. In a series of presentations, the writers/producers of each project laid out their vision for their show beyond the pilot with the help of visual aids, including demo reels. I hear the six scripts that made the cut this year are Chris Mundy‘s Low Winter Sun, an adaptation of the New Zealand Gothic murder mystery series; Craig Silverstein‘s Turn, about George Washington’s spy ring; Richard Lagravenese‘s Philly Lawyer, about a law student; Jake Paltrow & Robbie Kinberg‘s Crystal Pines, about a journalist who signs up for a cloning experiment; Jason Cahill‘s F/V Mean Tide, about a Maine lobster fishing family; and Kerry Williamson‘s Sacred Games,...

A 12-hour live telethon on Sunday brought together several stars from the film industry as well as from the sports fields. Sanjay Dutt, Sachin Tendulkar, Boman Irani, Govinda and many others went out of their way to raise funds for the ‘Support My School’ campaign which was launched in January by Ndtv, in partnership with Coca-Cola India, Caf and Un-Habitat. The campaign’s purpose is to create awareness on water and sanitation, environment and healthy, active living in Indian schools. To give just one example of one of the problems the endeavor hopes to erase is that in many schools, especially in rural areas, they don’t provide separate toilets for girls, which makes many girls back out from school so they remain uneducated. ‘Support My School’ wants to change that.
With Rs.500,000 per school, toilets for girls and facilities for drinking water, rainwater harvesting, and sports and games can be created.

LONDON -- NBC Universal is continuing its global expansion with a $150 million acquisition of a 26% stake in Indian cabler NDTV Networks, with an option to increase it to 50% in two years.
NDTV, a provider of Hindi lifestyle and entertainment channels including NDTV Imagine, NDTV Labs and NDTV Lifestyle, competes in a fast-growing market dominated by Star TV and Zee TV.
But the country's affluent middle classes and burgeoning manufacturing industries are propelling rapid growth in its television market, said NBC chief executive Jeff Zucker as he announced the step Tuesday.
"This will be a significant investment in an important emerging market and further illustrates our commitment to expand internationally, particularly in high-growth areas," he said in a statement. "The Indian TV market is growing at 16% annually, which provides huge opportunities now and into the future."
NBDTV CEO Vikram Chandra said NBC will be a strong partner for the growing business.
"Over the past six months we have launched four channels and made significant progress in new generation Internet and mobile phone offerings," Chandra said.
