Fresh off the first-ever Netflix is a Joke comedy festival, the streamer confirmed which performances will be available to view in the coming weeks, including tributes to late comedians such as Bob Saget and Robin Williams and the yet-to-be-announced date for Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias’s groundbreaking set at Dodger Stadium.
Featuring a wide range of events and stars, the festival also made headlines for some of its comedians’ jokes, such as Pete Davidson’s digs at Kanye West. But the biggest news of the fest was when Dave Chappelle was tackled on stage during his set at the Hollywood Bowl, with the attacker being charged with four misdemeanor counts. For its part, Netflix responded by saying, “We care deeply about the safety of creators and we strongly defend the right of stand-up comedians to perform on stage without fear of violence.” Chappelle’s four sold-out shows are not included in...

From director David Ayer comes Suicide Squad, starring Oscar nominee Will Smith, Oscar winner Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman and Oscar nominee Viola Davis.
It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super-Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?
Written and directed by Ayer based on the characters from DC, the film also stars Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz,...

Entertainment Weekly chatted with Jerome Chen, visual effects supervisor on The Amazing Spider-Man 2, about the work that his team at Sony Pictures Imageworks did. One section of the article that I found quite interesting, besides the GIFs and videos (below), was what he had to say about the design of Rhino. “The artists are fanboys and fangirls themselves, and there’s just this thing about mechanical robots that everyone loves, coming from Pacific Rim to Rhino to Transformers. So they put a lot of detail into it — rivets, even down to messy weld points — and if you study it, every piece looks like it’s from a different vehicle. They wanted it to look like Paul Giamatti’s character was given a base version of this mechanical suit put together out of surplus Soviet-era military gear that OsCorp had sold back in the ’80s and he went ahead and customized it himself.

When the Sony Pictures Imageworks special-effects team got the screenplay for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, they quickly realized that with great box-office comes even greater responsibility for technical wizardry. The scope of the sequel was much bigger than Marc Webb’s 2012 reboot, and in contrast to the numerous night action sequences that dominated the first film, the new movie would extensively showcase Spider-Man slinging through New York in broad daylight, an entirely new set of creative challenges. “For some of the shots of Spider-Man swinging through the city , the computer could take 40 hours to render one frame of the city of New York,...

The "Spider-Man" franchise serves as a good barometer for assessing the recent VFX evolution of Sony Pictures Imageworks. In "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," though, it's about the power to energize Electro (Jamie Foxx), thanks to advancements in lighting (using the 3D application Katana) and rendering through ray-tracing along with a more efficient workflow that empowers the artists. "It's more intimate in that it explores the relationship between Gwen [Emma Stone] and Peter [Andrew Garfield]," admits Jerome Chen, Sony's senior VFX supervisor. "It's a superhero that has to juggle his personal life with the weight of trying to be a hero. And he's also searching for some sort of meaning about why his parents abandoned him. Marc [Webb] says it's the classic hero's journey but he's trying to find his own identity in the process." This identity crisis is at the core of director Webb's more personal vision for this Spidey reboot. "Realistically, anybody whose parents.

It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). Jerome Chen, an Academy Award-nominated VFX supervisor who has been with Imageworks since its founding 20 years ago, had this to say about bringing the villain to life on the big screen with the use of visual effects. "He’s such an iconic villain from the comic books. And there have been so many variations - our departure point started with a beautiful sculpt done at Legacy. Our Lizard was almost nine feet tall, muscular and powerful, with a sweeping tail. The face is humanoid, which was important to provide us with a connection to the human Dr. Connors, as performed by Rhys Ifans." "Marc wanted the Lizard’s skin to have loose folds – like a Komodo Dragon – but still feel the power of the muscles moving beneath them," he said about the work which went into adding the incredible detail to the look of the Lizard. Over the last year or so, Pajiba has managed to amass a few industry sources who, for whatever reason, like to share information with us. We are thankful. Some of it we report; some of it we don't. We try to get, if not confirmation, at least some sense of whether the wind is blowing toward the truth in each instance. In the last several weeks, our sources have provided a few items that we feel are worth noting, despite the lack of track record. However, unlike the scoops we get from the Hollywood Cog, which have been confirmed so often now that we've come to consider him completely reliable, the following items should be treated as rumor, as they come from so-far unproven sources (although one insider source was accurate about a very big project we reported a few weeks back).
