Looking for something to warm your heart as we roll into winter? Disney.s got you covered with Frozen . (Come on; it was too easy and the film deserves it!) Move over, vampires, zombies and werewolves -- it's Frankenstein's monster's time to take over the big screen. And according to Deadline, there's a host of candidates waiting for their jolt of electricity. Universal is developing a new version of the 1931 classic with Guillermo del Toro and Scott Stuber; Summit Entertainment is developing 'This Dark Endeavor: The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein,' an adaptation of the Kenneth Oppel novel; Columbia Pictures recently acquired a contemporary re-telling of the famous tale based on a pitch by Craig Fernandez; Slasher Films (set up by Guns n Roses Slash) is working on 'Wake the Dead,' a Frankenstein tale based on a graphic novel; Fox 2000 is remaking 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show'; and, of course, there's Tim Burton's 'Frankenweenie,' which is filming for an Oct. 2012 release. Wait, you didn't ask for it? What's that...no one did? Well, someone needs to inform the suits in Hollywood, because apparently they are under the impression that what people want is dark takes on...well, everything. Dark comic book adaptations, dark spins on kid's shows, and now the latest trend; dark retellings of fairy tales. We've heard about the likes of a dark Peter Pan coming our way and now it seems Sony will be giving us a dark spin on Hans Christian Andersens’ The Little Mermaid. Why do I get the overwhelming feeling of a Little Mermaid/Prince/Lobster love triangle is upon us?

While Joe Wright has put a halt on his planned live-action film of The Little Mermaid (here), Sony is moving forward with their own. Heat Vision is reporting that Sony has picked a dark re-telling of Hans Christian Andersens’ The Little Mermaid with Shana Feste (Country Strong) to write and direct the film. Unlike the Disney film, this will center on a “princess who, in order to save her ravaged kingdom, sets out on a dangerous journey to marry the prince of her rival kingdom, not knowing that a beautiful mermaid has fallen for the same man and has sacrificed everything to be with him”.
There’s no word if this will have any effect on Joe Wright’s film, but it shouldn’t seeing as how Relativity Media and Universal are both putting out Snow White projects around the same date.

Country Strong director Shana Feste has been named by Sony as the writer and director of the upcoming film Mermaid.
Mermaid is based on Carolyn Turgeon's Mermaid: A Twist on the Classic Tale, a spin on Hans Christian Andersens' The Little Mermaid. This version of the story will be far different from the 1989 Disney film; the key word Sony has used to describe this upcoming project is "dark".
In addition to the un-Disney darkness, there is also a change of perspective. Mermaid is told from the point of view of the human princess who has promised to marry the prince of a rival kingdom in order to bring peace to the war-torn land; not knowing that a beautiful mermaid has also fallen in love with the prince, and that this mermaid is making great sacrifices in order to be with the man.

Sony Pictures is going to take Hans Christian Andersens’ classic fairy tale The Little Mermaid and take it in a completely different direction than what Disney did. The film will be an adaptation of Carolyn Turgeon book Mermaid: A Twist on the Classic Tale, story centers on a princess who, in order to save her ravaged kingdom, sets out on a dangerous journey to marry the prince of her rival kingdom, not knowing that a beautiful mermaid has fallen for the same man and has sacrificed everything to be with him.
Country Strong filmmaker Shana Feste has been hired to write and direct the project, Tobey Maguire and Jenno Topping producing.
Not sure what to expect from this, but fairy tale reboots are a big thing in Hollywood right now. Hanna director Joe Wright is also looking at making a Little Mermaid film.
Here's the description from the book:
