As you’d expect, the internet went nuts recently with the news that James Gunn had found his Superman and Lois in David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan. Some of the comments were from people upset that Henry Cavill wouldn’t be returning to the role after his brief cameo in Black Adam, and others were grinding their personal axes, but most seemed pretty positive about the casting.
But if you pay attention, you’d notice a theme in the responses, best captured in this Reddit post:

Rest easy, the world is safe from evil henchmen once again. After an exhaustive search, Warner Bros. and DC Studios have finally settled on a new Superman. David Corenswet will be taking on his first major leading role as the Man of Steel in James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy.
Superman’s leading lady Lois Lane will be played by Rachel Brosnahan, who is coming off the final season of her Amazon hit The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
Corenswet has some big tights to fill in the role that has been played by a host of actors on film and TV … and radio.
The first Superman was voiced by veteran actor Bud Collyer on the Adventures of Superman radio show that aired from 1940 to 1951. Collyer also was the voice of Superman in the animated series Superman (1941-1943) and the New Adventures of Superman (1966-1970).

Science fiction TV shows have a shorter shelf life than cryptocurrencies and social media influencers. What gives? It's not that complicated: big budgets + low ratings = cancellation. Hey, those space-age sets and costumes, alien makeup, and CGI aren't cheap. Meanwhile, passionate fans may sign petitions by the thousands, but ratings are what matters, and those fanbases are too small to impress execs trying to court advertisers.
Given the economics of television, it's not shocking TV studios routinely dump pricey sci-fi shows in favor of the newest "Big City Cop Show" procedural. To be honest, it's surprising sci-fi shows get made at all. Yep, it sucks, but that's show business. While it's easy to explain why most sci-fi TV shows get canceled, the reasons for some cancellations are downright baffling. These include sci-fi shows that were dropped despite decent ratings, canned with fully completed seasons, or even dumped after inspiring hunger strikes!

It’s interesting to discover that there have been a few more people that have put on the red and blue uniform throughout the years than just those that we’ve seen and really taken note of. Gerard Christopher actually donned the suit from 1989 to 1992 as Superboy, representing DC’s most famous hero as he flew across the sky and took part in several adventures before he quietly slipped from view. To date it would appear that he hasn’t done much past 2013 as he’s become a writer as well as an actor, though it’s worth noting that he was selected

While Batwoman Season 2 is officially on the CW schedule for January 2021, when it returns, it will have a different actress in the title role. Ruby Rose announced that she is leaving the series, for reasons that haven’t yet been made clear. The news came in a statement from Rose.
“I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season,” Rose offered in a statement (via Variety). “This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles. I am beyond appreciative to Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Caroline Dries for not only giving me this incredible opportunity, but for welcoming me into the DC universe they have so beautifully created. Although Batman has had the most big screen versions of his character (more on that here), Superman surely holds the record for most re-castings once you add his vast television history into the equation. From Smallville to television musicals via Man Of Steel and old-school cinematic serials, The Big Blue Boy Scout sure has got around over the years.
Of course, the iconic Christopher Reeve holds the record for most filmic appearances, and remains to many film fans The Superman. Henry Cavill is surely after both of those accolades, even if the former seems the more likely goal.
While we wait for Cavill’s Supes to receive a post-Metropolis-levelling ass-whupping from Affleck’s Batman, then, let’s have a look at the actors...

Christopher Reeve became a star 35 years ago by playing the title role in Superman: The Movie. He died in 2004. A decade later, we look back at the man who helped launch the superhero genre.
Many people have played the character of Superman. Kirk Alyn was the first on film, followed by names like George Reeves, Gerard Christopher, Dean Caine, Tom Welling, Brandon Routh, Henry Cavill and the voice work of Tim Daly. However, the late, beloved Christopher Reeve has achieved a special place in the public’s hearts and remains the standard by which all future Supermen will be judged. Reeve’s magnetic, appealing performance as the man of steel helped to kick-start the entire super-hero genre, which had gotten no traction before the Reeve’s film.
Undoubtedly, the super hero genre really began in 1978 with the phenomenal success of director Richard Donner’s big budget adventure Superman: The Movie.

The Adventures of Superboy found its groove with the third season and a sense of stability was most welcome as the tone was consistent and the stories got stronger thanks to Stan Berkowitz and the increasing influence of DC editors Mike Carlin and Andy Helfer. Gerard Christopher as the title character had truly grown as a performer with time and Stacy Haiduk’s Lana Lang was every bit his match. As a result, things looked promising as production on the fourth season got underway in the summer of 1991.
However, the success of Batman in 1989 and that summer’s sequel, Batman Returns, meant there was fresh demand for super-heroes. DC Comics’ parent, Warner Bros., had already had limited success with The Flash on CBS and was looking to build. They needed Superman but that meant, in a bizarre twist, they filed suit against Alexander and Ilya Salkind to regain control of...

"Man of Steel" director Zack Snyder and DC Animated Universe mastermind Bruce Timm teamed up to create this short looking at 75 years of Superman across comics, television, film, and games all the way from the character's first appearance in print to his most recent cinematic outing and reinvention in the New 52.
The short made its debut over at Entertainment Weekly, who spoke with Snyder and Timm about the origins of the project, the brainchild of Snyder, according to Timm. “We had approached [Snyder] about maybe doing a short for the DC Nation program on Cartoon Network. He said, ‘I’ll think about it,’ and then he had this idea to do basically the entire history of Superman in, like, a minute. We said, ‘Okay … whoooo.’ We started working and quickly realized there was no way to do it, even in a minute.”

When last we visited Clark Kent and Lana Lang, they were at college, leaving Smallville behind and as Season Three of the syndicated series arrived, it came with changes. The first was that Superboy became The Adventures of Superboy and then the focus moved the characters from the well-named Shuster University to a quasi-internship at The Bureau for Extra-Normal Matters in Capitol City, Florida. Clearly, the actors were aging and the premise of them being in college stopped making sense, plus menace of the week stories was becoming tougher to make plausible on the static campus. The more plausible setting worked for super-heroes but certainly took something away from the civilian side of life, a similar issue plaguing Smallville in its latter seasons.

Alexander and Ilya Salkind had sold Superman to the Golan-Globus Group/Cannon but wisely retained the rest of the family including Superboy. Thanks to Star Trek: The Next Generation pioneering first run syndication in 1987, the Salkinds realized the Teen of Steel would be perfect. Looking to produce this on the cheap, they set up shop in Florida, hired science fiction hack Fred Freiberger to produce and hired a slate of newcomers to fill the iconic roles of Clark Kent, Ma and Pa Kent, Lana Lang, Lex Luthor, et. al. The series debuted in 1988 with 25 episodes and was pretty laughable stuff. Freiberger was past his sell-by date and the Salkinds didn’t know how to handle the half-hour drama format.
Still, the ratings from the 95% of the country the series reached were strong enough to keep them going. However, changes needed to be made. Freiberger was shoved out and Salkind favorite...

Cassidy Freeman is moving on to a new series, but she still can see "Smallville" in her rear-view mirror.
Formerly the devious Tess Mercer on the young-Superman saga that lasted a decade, the actress plays it much more down-to-earth as the attorney daughter of the title sheriff (Australian actor Robert Taylor) in "Longmire," A&E's modern Western based on Craig Johnson's novels that premieres Sunday (June 3). Right after that, though, Freeman will step back into her immediate past.
Along with John Glover, alias "Smalllville's" Lionel Luthor, and Gerard Christopher -- the second title star of the syndicated "The Adventures of Superboy" -- she'ill be a guest at an annual Superman Celebration in Illinois on Saturday, June 9. She admits that for her, a big lure of the event is the name of its location: Metropolis.

A good actor can play any kind of character, but I’ve always maintained that any actor playing Superman should be a kind and humble person to begin with. Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) has maintained a reputation as a warm and open person whenever he meets a new fan. I have heard similar stories about John Haymes Newton and Gerard Christopher (Superboy and Adventures of Superboy TV series). I grew up in Williamstown, Ma where Christopher Reeve had a summer home. Superman may have caught the world’s imagination and helped make comic books an industry, but I wasn’t All That fond of him. I began reading comics about 25 years after his 1938 introduction (my first comic was actually a Green Lantern-Flash team-up), but I soon became a Marvel guy (or should I say a Disney/Marvel guy?), and if I had to have a favorite DC hero, it would have to be Batman. So, it’s kind of ironic that I became friends with Superman’s legendary comics editor Julie Schwartz in the 1980s, and no less than three ex-starlog Managing Editors (my protégés Eddie Berganza, Mike McAvennie, Maureen McTigue) ended up at DC Comics editing the Superman titles in the ’90s. So I sorta feel like a step-uncle, twice removed, to the Man of Steel. I had no effect on him, but my posse did.
