Exclusive: Vertical has picked up U.S. rights to Deadland, a thriller led by Roberto Urbina (TNT’s Snowpiercer), which world premiered at SXSW 2023. Marking the directorial debut of Lance Larson, the film is slated for a day-and-date release on November 3rd.
Urbina stars as U.S. Border agent Angel Waters, who comes across what would normally be a routine illegal crossing, but quickly spirals into his worst nightmare. In a tragic twist of fate, a detained immigrant is killed while being held at a remote border outpost. Days later, Angel is called back to the river where he is met with a terrifying sight — the same migrant that died is standing at the river’s edge. As strange phenomena begin to overtake his life, he soon learns that on this land, that which dies doesn’t always stay dead.

“El Paso, por favor.”
When politicians decide to crack down on unapproved immigration, migrants suffer, and so do the state agents sent to enforce it. The latter might not attract much sympathy, but Lance Larson’s genre-bending film, which screened at SXSW 2023, recognises that they are human beings. When Angel (Roberto Urbina) finds a stranger (Luis Chávez) wading into the waters of the Rio Grande, his first instinct is to warn him of the danger in the smooth-looking but fast flowing waters. The stranger doesn’t listen and when Angel pulls him out, he’s not breathing. Some time later, in the back of Angel’s car, the body bag begins to unzip.
“El Paso, por favor,” comes the stranger’s voice.
We never do find out why El Paso is so important, but that’s only one of the mysteries at work here. After dropping the stranger off with...

Set against the backdrop of the harsh and desolate Rio Grande river, Deadland uses the American and Mexican border as a launching pad to explore not only immigration but identity." After drawing blanks in their opening two matches, Mexico scored twice in the space of five minutes of the second half to give Mexico a 2-0 lead on Wednesday as the Saudi defence appeared to collapse.
Henry Martin and Luis Chavez scored for Mexico in the thrilling Group C match, but agonizingly went out of the World Cup on goal difference on a night of incredible drama in Doha.
With Argentina beating Poland 2-0 in Group C at Stadium 974 and Mexico leading by the same scoreline at Lusail Stadium in the 94th minute, Gerardo Martino’s side needed one more goal to prevent them from going out according to FIFA’s fair play rule.
"It is a great success after all those years. France will be a big challenge. We didn’t play a perfect game but we will analyse it and will try to have fun and attack," Polish star striker Robert Lewandowski said.

Mexico City, Nov 15 (Ians) Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Raul Jimenez has been named in Mexico’s squad for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar despite uncertainty over his fitness.
The 31-year-old has been limited to just four games this season for the Premier League club due to knee and groin injuries. As expected, the 26-man squad includes Ajax right-back Jorge Sanchez, Napoli forward Hirving Lozano and veteran goalkeepers Guillermo Ochoa and Alfredo Talavera.
Manager Gerardo Martino also called up 36-year-old Real Betis midfielder Andres Guardado, who will take part in his fifth World Cup, reports Xinhua.

This review originally ran Sept. 6, 2022, for the film’s world premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
Maybe you can judge a film by its title. Consider “Dead for a Dollar:” It certainly sounds like a Western, doesn’t it? The “dollar” might call to mind some of the classics of the genre, while the “dead” at least promises a few good shoot-outs, a bit of bloody fun.
Only taken together, the name does have a somewhat frictionless quality — “timeless,” if you want to be generous, “generic” if you don’t. Which makes it so perfectly apt for Walter Hill’s perfectly perfunctory new film.
The fact that the filmmaker behind “48 Hrs.” and “The Warriors” will be honored with a career achievement prize at this year’s Venice Film Festival no doubt pushed his latest, low-budget Western towards such a tony debut, while the cast of Willem Dafoe and...

For many years now Venice has been a respectful platform for those big-name directors of the 1970s and early ’80s who are happy to go back into the fray long after those juicy studio budgets dried up: Brian De Palma, William Friedkin, Paul Verhoeven, John Carpenter and — to a lesser extent — George Romero all found a home here for their late-period passion projects. Walter Hill, now 80, joins their ranks with an improbably youthful horse opera, and while it shows up the limitations of both writing and shooting a Western in the modern age, it’s nevertheless a wickedly enjoyable genre romp and full of violent surprises.
Hill dedicates his film to Budd Boetticher, which is a shame as it has already given critics permission not to think any harder...

If holiday madness has got you a little stressed, be thankful you’re not in the shoes of Della (Kim Basinger), the heroine of While She Was Out. In the film, opening in limited release today (see details at its website here) from Anchor Bay Entertainment, crowds, long lines and family unpleasantries are the least of the Yuletide pressures she confronts.
Well, Ok, family is one source of the tension, specifically her emotionally and physically abusive husband Kenneth (Craig Sheffer). Just a month ago, we learned that Adrien Brody and Michael Chiklis were heading back to High School -- a rather unique comedy about a high school valedictorian (Matt Bush) who gets high with the school stoner (Sean Marquette), and then tries to use his smarts to get out of an upcoming drug test. Rather then messing with his own results, he schemes to get the entire school stoned to beat the system. Brody's the drug dealer, Chiklis is the principal, and now The Hollywood Reporter posts that Lisa Simpson, aka Yeardley Smith, will play a homeroom teacher while Luis Chavez (Crash) plays a druggie friend of the valedictorian.
Meanwhile, Variety reports that Navy NCIS actress Cote de Pablo is making the jump to the big screen with Scott Speedman's The Last Rites of Ransom Pride. The Calgary Herald describes it as "a violent ransom about a woman trying...

Yeardley Smith has talked countless people into being vegetarians, playing the saxophone or having a reluctant affection for Ralph Wiggum, but most of us have never seen her face. The woman who voices Lisa Simpson only occasionally takes live-action film roles, but her next screen appearance will be as a real live human, in the indie comedy High School. The Hollywood Reporter writes that Smith and Luis Chavez (Morris from The Sarah Connor Chronicles) are joining the cast, which already features Adrien Brody and Michael Chiklis. The main characters are two stoners who plot to pass a drug test by getting their entire school high. Smith, perhaps as an older version of the ever-moral Lisa, will play a prim homeroom teacher. The movie might wind up being your average stoner comedy, but the bizarre trio of Smith, Brody and Chiklis is intriguing. I'm at least looking forward to the sight...
