- Critic (since 1963) and editor (since 1966) of the influential French film magazine Positif. Guest programmer for the 46th San Francisco International Film Festival (2003). He recently retired from a long-term post teaching American Studies at the University of Paris VIII. He has served on juries at many film festivals (Cannes, Berlin, Venice and Locarno). He is Chevalier of the Order of Merit, Chevalier of the Legion of Honor and Officer in the Order of Arts and Letters, and President of FIPRESCI.
