Popular singer of the 1940s ("Linda," "How Are Things in Glocca Mora?,"
several popular duets with Doris Day) and occasional film actor. Before
achieving fame on his own, he also dubbed in singing for several
non-singing actors (Jack Haley, William Holden) on film and sang with
Wayne King's orchestra. He died in 1949 at the age of 37, at the height
of his fame, when the private plane in which he was returning from a
Stanford University football game crashed onto Beverly Boulevard in
Hollywood, California.
