The story takes place in an imagined China in the 1800s. Lu Mu Bai (Chow Yun-Fat) and Yu Su Lien (Michelle Yeoh) run a security business, with Bai starting to become uneasy about his future and wanting to move on. He even gives up his weapon of choice, a sword called Green Destiny. This begins a series of events, in which Green Destiny is stolen by a mysterious warrior – under the auspice of Bai’s enemy Jade Fox (Cheng Pei-Pei) – which in turn releases a number of unsettled scores from Bai’s past. On the flip side of that story is a young woman named Jen (Zhang Ziyi...

Imagine a Tony Robbins session with a bunch of testosterone-fueled convicts and you’ll start to get an idea of “The Work,” an emotionally riveting documentary that may very well be the most powerful group therapy ever caught on camera. Co-directors Jairus McLeary and Gethin Aldous gained access to a tense four-day session at Folsom State Prison, where inmates engage with civilians in intimate conversations about their repressed frustrations. Scene by scene, their masculine armor falls away, and the tears erupt with volcanic intensity. The minimalist scenario, almost exclusively set within the confines of a nondescript room, foregrounds the visceral process of confronting anger and regret through a fascinating collaborative approach, with results that are alternately terrifying and cathartic.
“The Work” captures one of two annual sessions in which male prisoners and civilians joining together in close quarters to talk through their greatest fears and traumatic memories. While this initially...

I really wanted to play the original Yo-Kai Watch, but it got lost in the shuffle last holiday season and I just never got around to trying it out. That’s partly why I was so excited to get my hands on one of the sequel titles — either Yo-Kai Watch 2: Bony Spirits or Yo-Kai Watch 2: Fleshy Souls — to finally find out what I’d been missing. Nintendo’s been really pushing the franchise in the West, looking to capitalize on its Pokémon-lite mixed-media possibilities across games, toys and an animated series. Normally, I wouldn’t be bothered by such a thing, but seeing Level-5 at the helm was more than enough to make this something to get excited about; I’ve enjoyed just about everything they’ve done, from Dark Cloud to Ni no Kuni to Professor Layton.

A new listing on the Esrb suggests that Max Payne is heading to PlayStation 4. Could it be a re-release of the original...?
A few weeks ago, Sony announced that the PlayStation 4 is capable of emulating PlayStation 2 games, meaning that a wave of old games from around a decade ago could be heading our way fairly soon. While we won't be able to just put our old PS2 discs in the new-gen PlayStation, we're at least a bit further forward than we were a few months ago, when Sony originally stated that backwards compatibility simply couldn't happen.
At any rate, one of the finest games available for the PS2 could be getting a new airing. We've had an incling of this thanks to a listing on the Entertainment Software Ratings Board's website, which states that a game called Max Payne has been rated M for the PlayStation 4.

It appears the cat may be out of the bag a little early, as Sony has announced that eight different PlayStation 2 classics will be re-released for the PlayStation 4 today. The news, which could have been being saved for today’s PlayStation Experience panel, was leaked earlier in the week.
The list of PS2 classics which will be available today, which can be seen below, cover a handful of genres. Each of the classics will run between $10 – $15, which is a little more expensive than the PS1 classics were for the PlayStation 3.
Dark Cloud — $14.99 Grand Theft Auto III — $14.99 Grand Theft Auto: Vice City — $14.99 Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas — $14.99 Rogue Galaxy — $14.99 The Mark Of Kri — $14.99 Twisted Metal: Black — $9.99 War of the Monsters — $9.99
While some may scoff at the price, these aren’t just straight ports. All of the titles has been upscaled to 1080p, and come packed with features such as Trophies, Share Play,...

The first thing that fans of either roleplaying games or Japanese anime may be interested in is the pedigree of its creators. The art design, as well as some hand-drawn cut scenes, are provided by the acclaimed Studio Ghibli, home of renowned anime director Hayao Miyazaki and responsible for such animated films as Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, and most recently The Secret World of Arrietty. The game’s actual development is handled by Level-5, who is responsible for games such as Dark Cloud, Dragon Quest VIII, and the Professor Layton series of handheld games.

If you're into film studies by region, then Tiff's City to City series might be a worthy sidebar initiative. It began last year with the country of Israel, which proved to be a basterdized first choice -- as the selection was deemed a political one by the media and certain filmmakers from the other side of the "fence". This year patrons can visit Istanbul, Turkey through cinema -- ten feature-length films and seven short films and despite him not having made anything recently, they had no choice but to include a film from Nuri Bilge Ceylan. Here's the selections: 10 to 11 Pelin Esmer, Turkey/France/Germany North American Premiere An elderly man clashes with his neighbours as they try to remove him – and his elaborate collections of ephemera -- from his apartment. 40 Emre Sahin, Turkey International Premiere Capturing the dazzling intensity of Istanbul's 12 million souls, Sahin's groundbreaking feature crisscrosses the lives of a petty crook,...

YAŞASIN! Istanbul Spotlighted In Festival's City To City Programme
Toronto - In a highly anticipated announcement, Cameron Bailey, Co-Director of the Toronto International Film Festival, confirmed today that the city of Istanbul, Turkey, will be highlighted in the 2010 Festival's City to City programme. This is the sophomore year for the City to City series, which explores the evolving urban experience by immersing audiences in the most interesting films from and about a selected city.
"This has been a hard secret to keep! When we began discussions about a short list of possible cities back in January, Istanbul quickly emerged as a leading candidate," said Cameron Bailey. "Most people know Istanbul as a dynamic city with a rich history, but its film scene is less well-known. Over the past five years, filmmakers from this vibrant metropolis have been winning awards at Cannes and Berlin.

Imagine our surprise to receive this doomsday iPhone missive from Doc Jensen during his summer vacation: “A Dark Cloud Of Despicable Me-ness Has Descended Upon Us! Run For Our Lives!” We honestly had no idea he was camping in the middle of the jungle on The Island from Lost. But as usual, Doc is correct! This week’s main source of entertainment has come from people behaving badly.
Consider:
Lebron James became public enemy number one — arguably the most talked about man in America — the same week that the Jake-and-Vienna show grabbed ratings and one day before Despicable Me opened.

CANNES -- Jean-Bernard Levy, chief executive of entertainment and telecommunications firm Vivendi, confirmed on Saturday that Universal Music Group is not for sale.
Levy was at the annual music and Internet conference MidemNet to talk about that side of the company's activities, which he said he was very optimistic about.
"I feel there is a lot of hope, growth and value with talent that is very popular," he told a packed audience of attendees. "There has been a Dark Cloud but it's not as bad as some people think."
Levy, who has seen UMG's margins increase from 3% in 2003 to 20% in 2007, said he believes there is still a future for the compact disc.
"There is a wide population of consumers that will continue to buy physical products. Many people still want to buy a full album from an artist they like and not download just a couple of tracks," he said. "There has been a decline so we are trying to organize a migration but there will be a variety of products with TV, the PC and telephony all trying to be consumer friendly with music."
UMG has launched trials making music tracks available on the Internet without Digital Rights Management and Levy said, "We are still testing.

LONDON -- Cinema attendance figures in Latin America are expected to rebound strongly in 2006 from the downturn experienced last year, according to a report published Wednesday.
Titled Cinemagoing Latin America, the report from exhibition specialists Dodona Research indicates that admissions across Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela are predicted to pass 368 million in 2006 compared with 324 million in 2005.
The research also points to Brazil, Peru and Colombia as the fastest-growing markets in the region in coming years.
But Mexico is likely to be the one Dark Cloud flitting across the report's landscape.
The report says that while Mexico's admissions per person are the highest in Latin America, at 1.5 visits per person per year, "the market has reached maturity and there is uncertainty surrounding whether it can realistically support more new screens."
Brazil is the region's second-largest market and already has seen considerable growth in terms of multiplex development and admissions, the report says.

When she started catching me making some silly faces or talking in some funny way to the kids she would shake her head and tell me, 'Let me just get the camera to record this moment of history.'
