Primetime television has come a long way since 1972, when the ABC sitcom The Corner Bar became the first show on American television to feature a recurring gay character. Last night, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences hosted a panel to honor the many accomplishments of the Lgbt community in primetime television since that time and discuss the many steps still needed for complete equality both on and off screen.
The event, “10 Years After The Prime Time Closet — A History of Gays and Lesbians on TV,” was moderated by author Stephan Tropiano, whose book chronicles Lgbt characters in television history, but...

In the last decade, Here TV, an outlet for exclusively Lgbt based creative content, has evolved from a subscription VOD service to having it's projects hosted by online streaming behemoths like YouTube, Hulu, and Amazon while still airing as a linear network in many markets and as an Svod service on all major Us cable systems. "We are eternally grateful to the hard-working Here TV staffers over the past decade and numerous Lgbt writers, directors, actors, and producers who have helped grow and expand the availability of Lgbt film and television projects to a wider audience. We are proud of the work Here TV has done in showcasing the work of Lgbt filmmakers, and we look forward to the next decade of bringing unapologetically gay programming to audiences across the country and around the world,” said Paul Colichman, Here TV’s CEO, and Stephen P. Oscilloscope Laboratories founder Adam Yauch was hosting a DVD-release party last month at his offices high above SoHo when he was asked to summarize his startup's business strategy.
"What we do is find what we really like, buy it and then think, 'Is there a way to market this?' " says the man best known as McA of the Beastie Boys. Then, with a small smile at once sheepish and proud, he adds, "I guess that's the opposite of what you're supposed to do."
Yauch's boldness is increasingly common among a segment of the otherwise-depressed indie-distributor world, where unlikely players with unorthodox attitudes suddenly are filling the landscape.
Execs from gay-oriented media company Here! are getting into the foreign-film business. National Geographic, best known for eat-your-vegetables nature documentaries, is snatching up Sundance dramas for theatrical release, as it did with Cherien Dabis' immigrant-themed crowd-pleaser "Amreeka." Here Networks on Wednesday completed a merger with the struggling PlanetOut to create a new company called Here Media.
Here targets the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender population through the Advocate and other magazine titles as well as through movies via Here Studios and Here Films. Other assets include a television company and online properties Gay.com and Planetout.com.
Paul Colichman and Stephen Jarchow, who produced "Gods and Monsters" and other films, are CEO and chairman of the board, respectively, at Here. Also on the board is PlanetOut chairman Phil Kleweno.
Here employs 200 people in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles. It's a public company though not actively traded. PlanetOut shareholders received 20% ownership in Here.
The merger preserves the remaining assets of PlanetOut, a once high-flying Internet company that had struggled with losses and debt as it ventured into offline businesses. Its shares once traded for more than $100 apiece,...

Since a bunch of you have asked, no, Series 4 of Dante's Cove has not started shooting yet. I checked. It is still in development for a Fall shoot. It's still a money-maker for Regent/here! so there's little doubt that cameras will roll on the naked and nearly naked flesh of all the denizens of DC sometime this year.
Dantes isn't one of my favorite shows. I applaud every year that another season gets produced. I truly love the fact that queer genre is being made, year in and year out. Like with the The Lair, it's awesome that there's an audience for the supernatural shenanigans on both shows. I just wish both shows were... better. Better written, better acted, better produced. I want our stuff to be great, regardless of the gayness of it. I've never been convinced that Dantes or The Lair does that.

Rapturous reviews and broad appeal lifted Disney's 3-D animated feature "Up" to the top of the domestic boxoffice in its first weekend, as the Pixar-produced adventure comedy rang up an estimated $68.2 million in domestic boxoffice.
Universal's Sam Raimi-directed horror pic "Drag Me to Hell" opened on the lower end of pre-release projections while still managing a sturdy $16.6 million in third place.
The previous weekend's boxoffice champ -- Fox's Ben Stiller starrer "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" -- dropped 53% from its inaugural Friday-Sunday tally in registering $25.5 million in second place. "Smithsonian" totes a 10-day cume of $105.3 million.
Warner Bros.' sci-fi actioner "Terminator Salvation," which also debuted over the Memorial Day frame, fell 62% to $16.1 million in fourth place with an 11-day cume of $90.7 million. And Paramount's "Star Trek" grossed another $12.8 million in fifth place to become the first 2009 domestic release to travel north of $200 million with a four-week tally of $209.5 million.

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey! (Please include your city and state and/or country.)
Q: I was always under the impression that Dom DeLuise, like other 1970s B-level comic figures such as Paul Lynde, Rip Taylor, and Charles Nelson Reilly, was a not-very-closeted gay man. I was surprised, then, that when he died last week, there was no mention of that in any article I saw. I did read that he had a long marriage to a woman and several grown children (certainly not proof of heterosexuality, but nonetheless). Was I just misinformed? -- Thomasina, Alabama
Dom DeLuise
A: You and the Flying Monkey both. I also always simply assumed DeLuise was gay, so I was as surprised as you were to read last week that he’d been married for 44 years and had three children.
That said – and I’m not necessarily saying anything about DeLuise,...

More restless nights are ahead, children, as Dante's Cove goes into production for Season Four. here! has just announced that 10, new, half-hour episodes have been commissioned.
The upcoming season sounds much like my parties as Dante's Cove still reels from the dark apocalypse that nearly destroyed the island. Now hidden secrets and new rivalries bring even more deadly consequences lie ahead for the island’s sexy young residents.
With mysterious new characters and an even steamier plot, season four shatters lives and contains a mind-blowing twist that leaves the island’s inhabitants shaken to their core.
Yeah, that's definitely one of my parties.
“The response to the first three seasons of Dante’s Cove has been overwhelming, and our audience continues to want more,” said Paul Colichman, founder and CEO of here! Networks. “We are thrilled to announce that production will soon begin on a whole new chapter of the series.

As a sidebar before we jump into today’s topic, I want to keep my promise that this blog won’t just be about politics, or even gay horror. Sometimes it will just be about hot guys. Case in point: Todd Farmer, screenwriter of Jason X (with my favorite in the series after the original) and My Bloody Valentine 3D (with Zane Smith), which I saw on opening weekend and absolutely loved.
I (briefly) interviewed Farmer for a project called “Expanded Books” (formerly “Book Look”) when my friend Peter Bracke’s Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History Of Friday The 13th had its release party. At the time I thought, “Uh…he cute.”
Cut To: My Bloody Valentine 3D. I go see the flick with a gaggle of homos and what are we treated to? Naked Todd Farmer! Ok, more like naked Todd Farmer’s ass, but still! As much...

Here! -- the premium network aimed at gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender audiences -- has ramped up its original programming efforts with several series renewals. It also has recently greenlighted original movies in the wake of strengthened distribution.
The network approved more seasons of several original series, including second installments of The Lair and The DL Chronicles and a third season of Paradise Falls. In addition, Chad Allen will star as a private investigator in two fresh cases of its Donald Strachey Mystery movie franchise.
These pickups -- along with the recently announced series Ryan's Life, starring Rue McClanahan, and a third-season renewal of Dante's Cove -- mean that Here! will field more than 200 hours of original programming for the 2007-08 season, with five of its series entering a second or third season.
Meanwhile, the network has in the works a movie titled Solar Flare, the first of 12 eco-disaster films that will be released in theaters by sister company Regent a week before debuting on Here! The movie, starring Tracey Gold and Michelle Clunie, centers on a scientist (Gold) who works with a mother (Clunie) and her prodigy son, who has worked out a formula for predicting solar flares.
Also in the works is House of Usher, the second planned installment in a series of 12 movies based on Edgar Allan Poe tales following The Raven. It will premiere on Here! a week after making its debut in theaters.
"We have made a huge commitment to original programming with established stars," Here! Networks founder and CEO Paul Colichman said.

The April Blair-penned telefilm will be directed by David Winkler ("Finding Graceland") and executive produced by Paul Colichman, Jeffrey Schenck and Karen Spiegel. The telefilm is in production in Vancouver and is scheduled to air in November. Regent Studios is producing.
