- Willis Conover was born on October 18, 1920 in Buffalo, New York, USA. He was a writer, known for Jazz at the Smithsonian: Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers (1991), Jazz on a Summer's Day (1959) and The Subject Is Jazz (1958). He died on May 17, 1996.
- American broadcaster, host of the jazz program "Music USA," with which he eventually attracted the largest audience of any continuing international broadcast in history. Conover hosted jazz and classical programs at radio stations in Washington, D.C. In 1969 he produced and narrated the White House concert celebrating Duke Ellington's 70th birthday. Thanks to Conover, a jazz panel was established on the National Endowment for the Arts in 1975.
