The French animated film Une vie de chat gets an English-language rework to bring this delightful film to American audiences. The titular cat Dino is a docile, lizard-collecting house cat by day and a sneaky—and scratchy—thief by night. After spending the evening assisting the burglar Nico (Steven Blum) in stealing minor treasures like jewelry and African masks, Dino sneaks back to his house with the young girl Zoe. Zoe has lost her voice since her father’s death and clings to Dino as her only friend.
Her mother Jeanne (Marcia Gay Harden) will not be winning awards for her mothering skills any time soon as she all but ignores Zoe while immersing herself in an important police case involving the dangerous art thief Victor Costa (Jd Blanc), who happens to be the man who murdered her husband/Zoe’s father. Thus Zoe is left in the care of a nanny,...

A Cat in Paris
Directed by Jean-Loup Felicioli and Alain Gagnol
Written by Jacques-Rémy Girerd and Alain Gagnol
France, 2010
As contentious as every Oscar inevitably is, one of the few areas of consistency is in the Best Animated Feature category (and perhaps the Best Documentary Feature). The 84th Academy Awards saw five worthy candidates, including France’s A Cat in Paris, and although it certainly merits a nomination, the film lacks the form of its fellow contenders. Animated with artistry and distinct visual appeal, A Cat in Paris never truly actualizes its self-imposed expectations.
In Paris, a cat named Dino leads an auspicious double life. By day, Dino is the loyal, loving pet of Zoé (Oriane Zani), a young taciturn little girl. By night, Dino becomes an accomplice to Nico (Bruno Salomone), a prolific cat burglar that roams the rooftops of the city.

Another Memorial Day weekend come and gone, and here we are: summer has begun. Temperatures are rising all over the place, and you might have trouble finding comfort, let alone sleep, with all the humidity. You could make like the olden days and take to the air-conditioned cinema houses to beat the heat. With fairy tales, horror flicks, historical epics and more, there’s plenty of material to keep you in that ice-cold seat, eyes glued to the screen. Take note, however: the gore/scare factor is high this week; these movies probably won’t help you sleep at night.
The second Snow White flick of the year hits theaters this weekend, offering a much darker, gothic take on the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tale than its predecessor. Rupert Sanders helms “Snow White and the Huntsman,” in which the titular Snow White (Kristen Stewart) and Hunky Hunter (Chris Hemsworth) join forces...

I've been looking forward to seeing directors Jean-Loup Felicioli and Alain Gagnol's Oscar nominated A Cat in Paris for some time and GKids is finally bringing it to theaters on June 1 and the first domestic trailer is now online with a look at the first 3 minutes and 30 seconds of the film. The short version of the synopsis is to say a regular house cat is leading a double life, first as the pet to a little girl and second to a Parisian cat burglar with a big heart. The long version is as follows... Dino is a pet cat that leads a double life. By day he lives with Zoe, a little mute girl whose mother, Jeanne, is a detective in the Parisian police force. But at night he sneaks out the window to work with Nico--a slinky cat burglar with a big heart, whose fluid movements are poetry...

Nominated for the Best Animated Academy Award this year there was the eventual winner Rango, Puss In Boots, Kung Fu Panda 2 and than those two “other movies” that the audience never heard of. Well, it’s looking like those outliers may just be vastly superior the majority of the batch, as these things normally work out. Fernando Trueba, the director of one of the films, Chico and Rita, is already planning his follow-up, a film titled Tenorio, which follows the Brazilian pianist.
Then we have A Cat In Paris, which is getting a Us release next month, complete with an English-dub and a new theatrical trailer. Coming from Jean-Loup Felicioli and Alain Gagnol, the film takes on the wonderful method of hand-drawn animation, with looks to incorporate some stunning set designs with an German expression style. Marcia Gay Harden, Anjelica Huston and Matthew Modine provide the voices for this...

This is a whimsical childlike fable of a little girl and her clever cat that swiftly turns into a cops and robbers yarn
An unexpected Oscar nomination has brought this whimsical French animation more attention than it might otherwise have gained. It's a slight, attractive tale: a childlike fable of a little girl and her preternaturally intelligent cat that swiftly devolves into a very old-school cops and robbers yarn. Little Zoé, who hasn't spoken since her father was killed by master criminal Victor Costa, unwittingly shares her cat with a burglar called Nico. By a set of elaborate coincidences, Zoé, Nico and the cat end up battling Costa as he attempts to steal a giant African statue: there's a touch of Hitchcock here, with a visual style that's half Rugrats and half Chagall. The profusion of rooftop chases also means the jewel box that is the Parisian skyline gets a good visual workout.

After the loss of her father, Zoe (Oriane Zani) has retreated into a world of silence and isolation. Distant from her resolute Police officer mother Jeanne (Dominique Blanc), Zoe’s only true advocate in life is her black and orange cat Dino. The two share a loving and mutual relationship, but Dino has a secret: At night he is an accomplice to cat-burglar Nico (Bruno Salomone).
In case you have not heard, France is all the rage right now. The French are dominating American cinema [see The Artist and Hugo], whilst American cinema is obsessing with the French [see Midnight in Paris, TinTin and The Three Musketeers]. Over 75% of the recent Oscar accolades were, in some way, awarded to or due to French involvement. It seems that the West has written a billet doux to our baguette baking cousins, and one can only hope that this is a belle époque rather than just cinema du jour (I think that’s...
