Arriving at a moment when interest in all things atomic has been piqued by the global success of “Oppenheimer,” Dragan Bjelogrlić’s “Guardians of the Formula” offers a far more classical, but no less gripping take on a little-known episode marking a historical intersection between the medical and nuclear sciences. Based on Goran Milašinović’s book “Vinča Case,” there are further echoes of Christopher Nolan’s epic in how this elegantly constructed movie centers the ethical and ideological dilemmas of brilliant men of science thrust, somewhat reluctantly, onto the international political stage. But it differs in its careful inclusion of the heroism of ordinary people, and in showing how, while genius is valuable, it’s only prolonged exposure to more everyday human decency that can irradiate the more bull-headed scientific ego with the compassion needed for actual wisdom.

The thorny subject of child abuse is depicted delicately and with great attention to detail in this affecting debut feature from young Belgian filmmaker Emanuelle Nicot. The film is part of this year’s Cannes Critics’ Week programme and features an impressive turn by newcomer Zelda Samson. Les Miserables and The Eddy stars Alexis Manenti also stars alongside Marie Denarnaud and Jean-Louis Coulloc’h.
Twelve year old Dalva (Samson) lives alone with her father Jaques. One evening, the police storm into their home and arrest her father. Later the teenager befriends her feisty new roommate Samia who reluctantly agrees to teach her naive new friend about things she should have known by now.

"I'm scared... of being alone." 606 Distribution has revealed an official trailer for a lively French drama titled Love According to Dalva, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Emmanuelle Nicot. This originally premiered in the Critics Week sidebar section at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival last year, and also Camerimage in Poland, and just won the Audience Award at the 2023 Rotterdam Film Festival. The film stars newcomer Zelda Samson as the young woman at the center of it all. Dalva is 12, but she dresses and lives like a woman. One day, she's taken away from her house. "How far would you go for family?" Cohen Media Group will be releasing the indie drama Les Cowboys starting this week in the Us - check out the trailer and see the film. The modern French western is inspired by John Ford's masterpiece The Searchers, about a family that goes out desperately searching for a missing daughter taken from their prairie town in the east of France. John C. Reilly appears as "L'Américain", but it also stars François Damiens, Finnegan Oldfield, Agathe Dronne, Jean-Louis Coulloc'h, Ellora Torchia, Gilles Treton, Mounir Margoum, and many others. This looks quite impressive, and it looks like they end up somewhere in the Middle East, with excellent cinematography capturing all the locations. Here's the official Us trailer (+ poster) for Thomas Bidegain's Les Cowboys, direct from YouTube: A vast prairie, a country and western gathering somewhere in the east of France. Alain is a central figure in this community.

This film is formerly known as Maryland, and has been retitled to Disorder for the release in the UK. A new UK trailer has debuted online for this drama from last year's Cannes Film Festival starring Matthias Schoenaerts and Diane Kruger, directed by French filmmaker Alice Winocour. The cast includes Zaïd Errougui-Demonsant and Jean-Louis Coulloc'h. The story follows Vincent, an ex-soldier with Ptsd hired as personal security for the wife and child of a wealthy Lebanese businessman. This seems to be as much about Ptsd (the D from here is likely where the new title is from) as it is actual threats to the family. Take a look. Here's the new UK trailer for Alice Winocour's Disorder, originally debuted by Empire: Vincent (Matthias Schoenaerts) is an ex-soldier with Ptsd who is hired to protect the wife and child of a wealthy Lebanese businessman while he's out of town. Despite the apparent tranquility on Maryland,...

The new season of Mad Men begins tonight. Hooray! Meanwhile we're going all the way back to the beginning to share the show's movie references for fans and Mad Men virgins alike. Even if you don't watch the show, you're here because you love talking about the movies. Previously we covered episode 1 and its telling Gidget reference and episode's 2 throwaway Wizard of Oz bit. I'm cheating with this next installment which discusses neither a movie nor a television show, but a book. Since the classic book has fascinated multiple filmmakers, I'm allowing it to count. Mostly because I love the scene so much.
