Never mind the fact that Bisset’s film career began nearly half a century ago and that she was a Golden Globe nominee in the Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Mini-Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television category for the mini-series Dancing on the Edge. As a result, it took Bisset, who seemed about as surprised as everybody else when her named was called up, more than a minute to reach the stage. Tom Cullen and Chris New spend the weekend together in Andrew Haigh's Weekend Writer-director Andrew Haigh's gay love story Weekend scored the highest per-theater average this weekend (Sept. 23-25) at the North American box office according to Box Office Mojo. Screening at one New York City theater, the Sundance Selects-distributed Weekend — which, by the way, has nothing to do with Jean-Luc Godard's 1967 film of the same name — grossed an estimated $25,200. For the mathematically challenged: $25,200 at one theater equals a $25,200 per-theater average. Featuring Tom Cullen and Chris New as two gay men who during a seemingly long weekend discover that a one-night stand has metamorphosed into something more profound, the British-made Weekend has been greeted by overwhelmingly positive reviews. Haigh's movie, in fact, has a 96% approval rating among Rotten Tomatoes' critics, with Salon's Andrew O'Hehir calling it "one of the bravest, most honest and most accomplished stories of...

Exclusive: After entering the scripted series arena last year with its first crop of comedy pilots, which yielded its first scripted series, Working Class, Cmt is expanding into another area of original programming. The country music-themed cable network has established Cmt Original Movies, a new division that will produce TV movies for the network with a focus on romantic comedies and music-based films. The first two movies in the franchise, which will be released in late summer, are To the Mat (working title), starring Ricky Schroder and actress-singer Laura Bell Bundy; and Reel Love, starring actress-country star LeAnn Rimes. Both films will be produced by Entertainment One Television under head of MOWs Ira Pincus. "We’ve had great ratings success programming with acquired theatrical romantic comedies, so it is only natural for us to create original stories that are tailor-made for the Cmt audience," said Cmt's Svp programming Mary Beth Cunin.

A Note from the Flying Monkey: Of the many emails I receive every week for my column, some are so good that they simply can’t be answered in just a few words. So from time to time, the editors have decided to let me out of the “cage” of that regular column, in a feature we’re calling Monkey Uncaged!
Q: What, in your opinion, is the worst gay film ever made? Why? – A.R.
A: A couple of months ago, I wrote a list of what I considered to be the ten most “important” gay male films – not what I felt were the “best,” mind you, but the ones that I felt had had the most impact either on the Glbt community or society at large.

Chicago – Renee Zellweger and Harry Connick Jr.’s “New in Town,” now on DVD and Blu-Ray, was a massive bomb in theaters, opening in 8th place and grossing only $17 million, less than any widely-released Zellweger film in her entire career.
Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0 I only mention this because so few people have seen the film that they may be drawn to it at Blockbuster or in their Netflix queue. “New in Town” isn’t nearly as painful as I expected it to be but the horrendous script sink all the best efforts of the reasonably charming Renee and always-good Harry.
New in Town was released on Blu-Ray on May 26th, 2009.

I’ve been thinking about sexuality a lot lately, which is different than thinking about sex, but not by much.
Why are most men the way they are about sex — and so different from most women? Are gay men different from straight men? And what does the internet have to do with it?
Interesting questions, no? Even if they're not, the subject of "Male Sexuality" gives me an excuse to write about sex in this week’s edition of the Best.Gay.Week.Ever!
How Sexual Are You?
In order to get in the mood, let’s begin with a brief quiz, shall we? (Fyi, the quiz program won't let me use "dirty" words — words like "sex".)

The past few months have given us Kate Hudson as a domineering legal barracuda with power bangs (Bride Wars), Meg Ryan as a hard-charging, cynical movie executive (The Deal on DVD), and now adorable Renée Zellweger as a ruthlessly ambitious junior achiever coldly maneuvering her way up the corporate ladder in the perfectly mediocre new comedy-drama New In Town. Carol Kane may achieve her life's dream of playing Leni Riefenstahl yet. Co-written by Sweet Home Alabama's C. The wintry New Ulm, Minnesota is the setting of the film .New in Town.. But this supposed warm romantic comedy left me cold like its arctic backdrop.
Renee Zelwegger stars as Lucy Hill, an ambitious female executive based in Miami. She.s trying desperately to climb the corporate ladder so when the opportunity arrives for her to ascend, she gladly takes it.
But that opportunity will make Lucy move from the warm Miami to the blistery cold New Ulm. What.s a tropical girl to do?
Written by Kenneth Rance and C. Jay Cox, the script is so steeped with Minnesota clichés that I felt bad for its inhabitants. All the residents talk like Frances McDormand.s character, Marge Gunderson, in .Fargo..
Incidentally, Lucy.s assistant in the film is named Blanche Gunderson (Siobhan Fallon Hogan). Is this the filmmakers. homage to the far better .Fargo?...

"New in Town" will be available to be seen by the entire family. On Tuesday, January 20, Lionsgate and Gold Circle Films announced that the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has toned down the rating of the romantic comedy from Danish film director Jonas Elmer from PG-13 to PG.
The new rating was given by the MPAA after the Lionsgate and Gold Circle Films mutually agreed to cut out the scenes with profanity. In a statement from both studios, the decision to delete strong language was taken to make the film "accessible and acceptable to the entire family", especially since it "has received strong early word-of-mouth from family-friendly audiences".
Pairing up Renee Zellweger and Harry Connick Jr., "New in Town" tells the story of Lucy Hill, an ambitious, up-and-coming executive living in Miami who encounters a life-changing experience when taking a temporary assignment in the middle of nowhere. Written by...

A high-powered consultant, Lucy Hill is an ambitious, up and coming executive who loves her upscale Miami lifestyle. When one day she is offered a temporary assignment to restructure a manufacturing plant, she jumps at the opportunity, not knowing that she will have to adjust her life to a tiny Minnesota town. What begins as a straight forward job assignment becomes a life changing experience as Lucy discovers greater meaning in her life and most unexpectedly, the man of her dreams.
In the brand new trailer of "New in Town", it can be seen that Renee Zellweger star as the stylish Lucy Hill. The video footage gives out clues on the bone-tickling comedy to be expected from the movie as Lucy tries to adapt to the new situation. Focusing on the out-of-the-box moments for Lucy, the trailer also shows the building-up romance between her and Ted Mitchell.

A federal court judge has dismissed a copyright infringement lawsuit against The Walt Disney Co. filed by Oscar-nominated producer Stuart Benjamin and three others, finding the movie Sweet Home Alabama was not based on their screenplay, Rescue Me.
In his 22-page decision issued Dec. 12, U.S. District Court Judge George Schiavelli ruled that while there may have been some limited access to the Rescue Me screenplay by Disney executives, no "substantial similarities" between the two scripts exist.
"The general stories of 'Rescue Me' and 'Sweet Home Alabama' are similar only at the most abstract level," Schiavelli wrote. "Abstract story ideas, such as those here, are not copyrightable."
Benjamin, a producer on the Oscar-winning film Ray, along with Alise Benjamin, John Schalter and Sheldon Cohn sued Disney in 2005, claiming that the 2002 movie starring Reese Witherspoon was an unauthorized adaptation of their screenplay.
The lawsuit alleged that the film's producer Stokley Chaffin and writer C. Jay Cox had access to the script via a tracking system in place at Chaffin's production company.

NEW YORK -- Representing a significant departure from his screenplay for the hit romantic comedy "Sweet Home Alabama", this directorial debut from C. Jay Cox is a sometimes comic melodrama depicting the burgeoning romantic relationship between a hunky L.A. waiter and a repressed gay Mormon. While "Latter Days" doesn't manage to blend its disparate tones into a satisfying coherent whole, it is an obviously heartfelt effort that should attract art house interest because of its controversial subject matter. It opened Friday in various theaters in New York, Los Angeles and, yes, Salt Lake City.
The central characters are the ironically named Christian (Wes Ramsey), a well-toned West Hollywood waiter, and Elder Aaron Davis (Steve Sandvoss), one of four Mormon missionaries who have moved into Christian's apartment complex. Christian, trying to win a bet with co-workers at the trendy restaurant at which he works, attempts to seduce Aaron, who is clearly confused about his sexuality.
But what starts out as a deception turns real when Christian falls for the younger man, and both start to question their long-held values and beliefs.
Cox's screenplay, while occasionally lapsing into the sort of cliches endemic to so many gay-themed films, generally treats its unusual subject matter with dignity and complexity, and the characters are well-drawn and sympathetic. This is particularly true of many of the supporting characters, played by several well-known actors. These include Lila (Jacqueline Bisset, looking even more gorgeous than usual), the supportive and advice-giving restaurant owner; sister Davis Mary Kay Place), Aaron's mother, who is desperately trying to come to terms with her son's homosexuality; Ryder (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Aaron's homophobic fellow missionary; and Keith (Eric Palladino), a bitter and sardonic AIDS sufferer.
While the leads are not quite as accomplished, Sandvoss is highly sympathetic as the conflicted Aaron, and Ramsey provides the sort of looks and charisma that makes his character's irresistibility quite believable. Cox's direction is uneven at best, and the film's technical elements are rough-hewn, but overall, "Latter Days" boasts a sincerity lacking in far too many indie efforts.
