The prolific filmmaker who revolutionised horror with wry takes on the genre like the Scream franchise and A Nightmare On Elm Street died on Sunday from brain cancer.
He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on August 2 1939 and burst on to the scene with The Last House On The Left in 1972.
A Nightmare On Elm Street in 1984 earned him worldwide renown and sparked a cult franchise as well as the career of Johnny Depp.
Twelve years after that came Scream, a playful spin on the horror genre that triggered a highly lucrative franchise. Recently he had been working as executive producer on a Scream series for MTV.
Craven, who had moved back from Martha’s Vineyard to Los Angeles three years ago for work and health reasons, recently signed an overall television deal with Universal Cable Productions.
Television projects in development included The People Under The Stairs with Syfy Networks, Disciples with Ucp, We Are All...

Jonathan Craven (son of Wes) and Cody Zwieg - who previously produced The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes remakes - are back with a new thriller entitled Charm, from director Ashley Cahill.
Cahill also stars in ths film alongside Rebecca Dayan, Jennifer Murray, James DeBello and Jake Hoffman.
Kirsten Dunst apparently makes a cameo as well.
Cahill plays Malcolm, a young man whose principle interests are movies, New York, and mass murder. He's a New Yorker who gets tired of how gentrified, tepid and antiseptic it's all become. So, he decides to take matters into his own hands by personally starting a crime wave which he hopes will catch on and drive real estate value down, opening up the city to bohemians, artists and a swell of creativity, just like the supposed good 'ole days of the 1970s and '80s. The only problem is: Nobody is paying attention.

- Jameson here with a recap of Day 2 of the New York Comic Con:Saturday February 24: I arrived at 9 am for a press-only preview of The Hills Have Eyes 2 and breakfast with Wes Craven, who is acting as a producer and screenwriter on the sequel to the remake of his original sophomore feature film, The Hills Have Eyes. Also present were his so and co-writer Jonathan Craven, along with two cast members, Jessica Stroup and Daniela Alonso. I talked to Jessica for a few minutes and she spoke enthusiastically about the combat training and rock climbing the cast did in preparation for the film, and also how lunch on the set could be a little odd at times with half the cast walking around in full mutant make-up. I also got the chance to speak with Wes Craven, and ask him one question: What scares him? He claimed no phobias,
