Baltimore — whose title refers to a village in County Cork, Ireland — begins in the midst of a heist, but it’s not a heist film. And its starting point is not just any heist but the largest art theft in history, pulled off by four Ira members led by a onetime debutante, Rose Dugdale. She’s the focus of Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor’s concise and intimate film, and she’s played with a compelling mix of ferocity, focus and conscience by Imogen Poots.
As a few incisive flashbacks reveal, Rose grew up in immense wealth but never quite bought into the entitlement and expectations. At age 10, on her first fox hunt, her sympathies lie with the fox. On a museum visit, the teenage Rose baffles her mother when she’s moved by a painting’s focus on a Black woman; Mum sees a piece of pottery as the...

Rose Dugdale has the kind of life story where, if she didn’t happen to be a Marxist, it would feel tailor-made for a Hollywood film. The heiress of a millionaire English family, Dugdale was born into an easy life: finishing school, debutante balls, and a place in the rarefied halls of Oxford. But Dugdale rejected the wealth handed to her and, after an incident in which she attempted to steal 82,000 pounds worth of silverware and paintings from her parents’ estate, left England to become a member and leader in the Irish Republican Army, fighting to end British rule of Northern Ireland.
“Baltimore,” a new feature film starring Imogen Poots as Dugdale, occasionally jumps somewhat awkwardly through this woman’s path to radicalization, but the film, from writer, director, and editor duo Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor, largely anchors itself on the nine-day sliver of time she’s most notorious for.

Luther fans finally saw Idris Elba's character return in the Luther: Fallen Sun movie on Netflix, but a small continuity change was made to the title character's storyline.
Starring Elba, Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis, and Dermot Crowley, the Luther: Fallen Sun movie follows Dci John Luther (Elba) after his release from prison as he hunts down a serial killer in London.
At the end of the Luther TV show, Luther was arrested for various crimes but primarily for being framed for the death of Mr. Palmer, an assassin he had shot but not killed. In the film, however, we are led to believe he was incarcerated because villain David Robey (Serkis) has released incriminating evidence surrounding Luther's illegal misdeeds.

Picking up where Series 5 of the TV show left off, Luther: The Fallen Sun sees Idris Elba’s brilliant but disgraced copper breaking out of the slammer to hunt down serial killer David Robey (Andy Serkis). A twisted tech genius with dodgy hair and an even dodgier fashion sense, Robey is luring his victims by hijacking their digital footprints and using their deepest, darkest secrets – or as he calls it, their “shame” – against them.
Robey is one of the franchise’s creepiest and most sadistic baddies. Not only is he able to properly go toe-to-toe with Luther both physically and mentally, but his vast resources allow him to carry out his crimes on a much grander scale than we’re used to seeing – think a very, very messed-up Bond villain.

Luther’s back. Being banged up at the end of Series 5 didn’t stop that growly genius from taking on a new case and a new villain in Bond-inspired Netflix movie The Fallen Sun. And, since most of his former colleagues were spectacularly killed in the line of duty, the man’s being joined by a fresh cast.
Dermot Crowley returns as John Luther’s former boss Dsu Martin Schenk, who’s joined by Cynthia Erivo as Luther’s replacement on the team, and far from his biggest fan. Going toe-to-toe with Idris Elba’s John will be Andy Serkis as surveillance tech billionaire David Robey, possibly the detective’s darkest foe yet.

Going toe-to-toe with Idris Elba’s John will be Andy Serkis as surveillance tech billionaire David Robey, possibly the detective’s darkest foe yet.

Luther: The Fallen Sun is an action movie directed by Jamie Payne starring Idris Elba. With Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis and Dermot Crowley.
Idris Elba is the main attraction in this thriller that mixes James Bond with serial killers and gruesome crimes: without being a great movie, it has a little bit of everything to entertain you on a Friday night and delight horror thriller lovers.
Movie Review
It doesn’t always work, but it knows how to correctly apply the rules of the genre and borrow ideas from other referential films. The ideas worked before, they work now, even if everything is blatantly “familiar” and the bad guy is not exactly Hannibal Lecter.
It has its charm, its BBC-like “British” photography and perhaps precisely because of that, it sometimes tends to drift over to the made-for-tv film side of the road, with some “easy” and not very elaborated sequences.

Luther: The Fallen Sun, the first movie adventure for Idris Elba’s morally (and fashionably) grey detective, follows up five series’ worth of shenanigans in the successful BBC TV thriller. That’s a lot of murder, character development and shocking moments. The Fallen Sun has been designed to work as a standalone story as well as a continuation of the show, but with a world this complex, context is everything.
So, if you want to refresh your memory so you’re ready to catch all of The Fallen Sun’s cheeky references, or even if you’re new to the world of Luther and want to find out how we got to this point, here’s a handy primer on the story so far…

Neil Cross has admitted that a well-loved series character almost returned in the Luther film.
The novelist and TV writer has created a Netflix movie based on the BBC series, titled Luther: The Fallen Sun, in which Luther is pitted against David Robey (Andy Serkis), a tech billionaire with deadly motives.
It’s the first Luther project since the fifth series in 2019, and is low on returning characters: the only other regular to appear is Dsu Martin Schenk (Dermot Crowley).
However, in a new interview with The Independent, Cross opened up about the “temptation” he felt to bring back other characters in varying ways, including Ruth Wilson’s Alice Morgan.
“Alice is not in this film, but that's not a kind of an act of exclusion – it's a sin of omission,” he said. “If anything, it's not an attempt to prove anything.

Idris Elba returns in Luther: The Fallen Sun as Dci John Luther, reprising the role he played in twenty-one episodes of the BBC television series from 2010-19. For the most part, the film plays well as a crime drama, but the cinematic debut of the character seems less focused on telling a self-sustaining story within the already constructed universe of the television series, and more intent on proving that Elba would have indeed made a potent James Bond.
As Luther: The Fallen Sun begins, the disgraced detective is behind bars, being taunted by the cyber psychopath he failed to capture, leading to his incarceration. As the taunting increases, along with the killer’s crimes, Luther decides he must break out of prison and catch this maniac by any means necessary. Developing a successful TV show into a movie is a tricky old business: go too big and you risk jumping the shark; play it safe and it’s slightly more polished business as usual. For the most part, Luther: The Fallen Sun – the first feature-length outing for Idris Elba’s beloved, rule-bending detective – plots a skilful course between the two. But a Netflix-sized upgrade, it seems, can be both a gift and a curse…
Serving as both a continuation of the show and a standalone adventure, The Fallen Sun is surprisingly self-contained, with just enough exposition up-front to ensure that newbies aren’t lost and a handful of references to past cases littered throughout for fans to pick up on.

Misery is part of the “Luther” equation. It’s visited on suspects and victims and detectives and, to some extent, the audience watching it. Over five seasons, it’s been a cornerstone of the BBC crime drama, a neverending series of rock-bottoms.
That overpowering darkness has been a major “Luther” throughline, coupled with the shuffling in and out of the coworkers and compatriots of Dci John Luther (Idris Elba). He’s had partners — in most senses of the word — die in front of him. He’s uncovered grisly killings and mutilated bodies. Those five seasons have been a steady dose of one-upping, to see how much one man can survive.
So after almost a decade of rumblings, the long-discussed “Luther” movie has arrived. “Luther: The Fallen Sun” is more adaptation than extension, changing the environment and Luther’s toolset in a way that makes it accessible for viewers who haven...

Luther, the BBC crime drama starring Idris Elba as a rule-adverse detective, was swiftly overtaken by cinematic ambition. What began as a relatively humble cop series set in a crime-ridden London became increasingly more absurd as it went on. By its fifth series, Luther was dealing with a killer in a clown mask shooting people full of nails. Luther: The Fallen Sun, a feature-length revival by Netflix, feels like an all-too-logical extension. The budget’s been upped considerably. Hollywood’s own Andy Serkis and Cynthia Erivo have been air-lifted in for support. And it’s fun, in the patently ridiculous way these sorts of zhuzhed-up thrillers tend to be.
The Fallen Sun isn’t much of a Bond audition for Elba – who’s had to shoot down rumours he’s the next 007 yet again this week – but it’s a solid argument for making him the next Batman. Here’s...

Idris Elba may have taken himself out of the running to play James Bond, but he’s got a pretty terrific franchise already going playing John Luther, the dogged and troubled British detective. The title character of the hit BBC series that’s been running periodically since 2010 has now been given the big-screen treatment with the new feature film directed and written by series veterans Jamie Payne and Neil Cross, respectively. Well, big screen for a little while, anyway, since Luther: The Fallen Sun is receiving only a limited theatrical release before premiering on Netflix next month.
The creators have cannily threaded the needle with this feature installment, designed to please longtime fans while providing an easy entry point for newcomers. The movie plays like a series episode on steroids, with significantly bigger production values and a darker tone (and that’s saying something) that comes close to horror-film territory.

We now have the trailer for Luther: The Fallen Sun, which will hit theaters on February 24 and be available to stream on March 10. Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary. Streamers had been in the news a lot over 2022. Less for what they were providing their subscribers but more for what they weren’t providing. Finished movies were shelved forever, projects canceled outright, and shows that seemed a shoo-in to be renewed were canceled. Luckily for 2023, it looks like we’re still about to get a lot of great content sent directly to our homes. What streaming films should we be anticipating?

Detective dramas are a dime a dozen, but the BBC series "Luther" was possibly the most intense and sometimes shocking police procedural of all time. The series mixed high-intensity thriller stakes with a deeply dramatic detective story, following Idris Elba's character John Luther as he tried to reconcile the daily horrors he witnesses on the streets of London with his idea of justice.
When "Luther" began in 2010, Elba was already a rising star with roles like Stringer Bell on the hit series "The Wire," but in the 12 years since, he's become a global superstar. Thankfully, the talented performer has another round as the tortured detective Luther in him, as the detective's first film, "Luther: The Fallen Sun," is set to debut next year.
