Exclusive: Thriving U.S. indie producer-distributor Neon is no stranger to the Cannes Film Festival with the Tom Quinn-founded banner having acquired a historic four consecutive Palme d’Or wins, thus earning them the nickname “the Palme d’Or whisperers”. This year, while the company has Sean Baker’s new rom-com Anora playing in Competition, it’s also descending upon the Croisette in a new capacity with its recently-launched international sales strand, led by seasoned sales exec and Sierra/Affinity veteran Kristen Figeroid.
International buyers will be hard pressed not to notice the new Neon banner right on the Croisette this year, as the company launches sales on Osgood Perkins’ next genre movie Keeper, starring Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland. Picture the scene — an idyllic rural resort in the German Alps, with trees as far as the eye can see and a bespectacled Dan Stevens in tow. Sounds like the stuff of dreams, right? Well, if the first trailer for Hunter Schafer-starring horror Cuckoo – from Luz director Tilman Singer – is anything to go by, it's more like the stuff of nightmares. Check it out below:
Anybody else's heart pounding after that? Sheesh! Right from the all-too-Shining opening shots of a car wending its way through the countryside, it's abundantly clear that this is no cosy travelogue about sweet birds and European natural wonder. And the shrieks among the trees, ominous shots of taxidermy bears, and Dan Stevens' accented, low-key menacing "How would you like to come work for me at the resort?" here certainly don't suggest a five-star TripAdvisor review is on its way any time soon. In fact,...

Writer/Director Tilman Singer continues his streak of experimental high-concept horror with his sophomore effort, Cuckoo. The filmmaker boldly marches to the beat of his own drum, examining heady themes of grief, reproduction, and gendered expectations through inventive, playful horror. That Cuckoo plays it fast and loose with details and plotting means that this body horror entry will likely polarize, but lovers of weird cinema will find a lot of charm in Singer’s latest.
After a peculiar cold open that won’t make sense until much later in the film, Cuckoo introduces seventeen-year-old Gretchen (Hunter Schafer). The moody teen wears her disdain plainly as she’s dragged by her father, Luis (Marton Csókás), stepmother Beth (Jessica Henwick), and her mute 7-year-old stepsister Alma (Mila Lieu) to the Bavarian Alps resort where Alma was conceived. Gretchen’s deep in the throes of grief over the loss of her mother, whose...

Hunter Schafer is a very good actress. This probably won’t be news to anyone who watched even the first episode of Euphoria, where her aching vulnerability seemed to swallow the scenery whole. Fresh from appearing in the latest Hunger Games, the actress takes her first leading role in Cuckoo, a supernatural horror that doesn’t feel pushed to explain itself, offering a fun mashup of older, less-well-heeled filmmaking tropes. There is a nicely hammy turn from Dan Stevens and one finely tuned homage, but in Schafer it holds an ace: nailing the physical comedy and stretching her emotive face to the limit, the film is all hers.
In Cuckoo, Schafer stars as Gretchen, a teenager who is joining her father Luis (Marton Csokas) as he moves to a resort in the German Alps with his new wife Trixie (Greta Fernández) and daughter Alma (Mila Lieu). Upon arrival they meet Luis’ boss Mr König,...

Ornithologists will no doubt roll their eyes and scoff, “Who doesn’t know that?” But it was news to me that cuckoos, aside from inspiring those infernal kitsch clocks you want to smash once an hour, are also what’s known as brood parasites. That means they’re either too busy or too lazy or too evil to raise their own young, so they drop their eggs in the nests of other birds and let them do the parenting instead. Respect. German writer-director Tilman Singer folds that fascinating nugget of bird arcana into a reproductive horror scenario that’s more strange than coherent in his second feature, naturally titled Cuckoo.
There’s more than the seed of an entertainingly trippy freakout here, applying the peculiar breeding habits of the cuckoo to the demented plan of a self-described preservationist, bent on somehow or other building an assembly line of enhanced propagation using young “nestlings.

Tilman Singer, emerging as a distinctive voice in the horror genre with his debut, Luz (2018), is set to captivate the horror community once again with his upcoming film, Cuckoo. Slated for release on May 3, this film promises to blend psychological horror with supernatural elements against the hauntingly beautiful backdrop of the German Alps.
The Plot of Cuckoo
At the heart of Cuckoo is the story of 17-year-old Gretchen, who, with great reluctance, moves to join her father and his new family in a resort nestled in the German Alps. The move introduces Gretchen to her mute half-sister, Alma, and Mr. König, her father’s enigmatic boss, whose peculiar interest in Alma begins to unsettle Gretchen. The serene setting quickly reveals its darker undercurrents as Gretchen is plagued by unexplained noises and disturbing visions, catapulting her into an investigation that uncovers a deeply unsettling secret that ties back to her family.

Distributor Neon has spent the first few weeks of 2024 teasing one of the horror movies they’ll be unleashing this year, and the campaign has been particularly interesting because they’re not telling us what movie they’re even promoting. Some think it’s the Hunter Schafer-starring Cuckoo, while most believe it’s the Nicolas Cage-starring Longlegs.
Our best guess is that it’s indeed Longlegs, a serial killer horror movie from director Osgood Perkins (The Blackcoat’s Daughter, Gretel & Hansel). Nicolas Cage stars alongside Maika Monroe, with Monroe playing an FBI agent and Cage playing a serial killer.
For what it’s worth, Bloody Disgusting has heard that the official teaser trailer for Longlegs is coming soon, which lends credence to the belief that these teases are also for Longlegs.

Tyler-James stays busy – so busy, it seems like the saying “Another week, another Tyler-James project” might soon be accurate. We’ve heard about multiple Tyler-James movies recently, as the filmmaker has produced the films that turn the popular nursery rhymes Mary Had a Little Lamb and Three Blind Mice into horror stories, and directed both The Loch Ness Horror and Monsternado. Also directed by Tyler-James is the upcoming ITN Distribution release Sky Monster, and a trailer for the film can be seen in the embed above. We don’t yet know exactly when Sky Monster is going to be released, but take a look at the trailer and find out if this looks like something you’d want to watch.

What dreams may come...
Season 1 of Netflix's "The Sandman" wasn't quite the great Neil Gaiman adaptation some of the storyteller's fans have been waiting for. It nevertheless set the series (which is far from strictly a fantasy drama) on the path to becoming the next best thing to reading Gaiman's original comics. That it was able to stay faithful to the spirit of its source material while including some welcome modifications -- some of which, admittedly, were more superficial than others in the way they modernize the "Sandman" universe -- is all the more reason to remain hopeful about the show's future.
Of course, it also helps that Gaiman's earlier "Sandman" comic books (which formed the basis of season 1) are generally agreed to be the weakest of the lot, compared to what comes after. With the best of the saga of Morpheus still on the horizon, fans have been...

This post contains spoilers for the first five volumes of the "Sandman" comics, and will most likely spoil events for the upcoming second season of the show.
It's going to be a while before season 2 of "The Sandman" drops on Netflix, which means we've got plenty of time to speculate on what's going to happen. For fans of the comics, we've already got a pretty good idea: we're definitely going to see the events of "Season of Mists" adapted on-screen, which is bound to be a fun time. We'll get to meet Delirium and Destiny, we'll get to watch as demons escape into the mortal world, and we'll get to see Gwendoline Christie's Lucifer start her own piano bar in Los Angeles. It's gonna be a good time.
What's less certain is the adaptation of "A Game of You." Although we're sure the show has no plans of skipping...

A miracle happens about 35 minutes into Johnnie To’s new film, “Chasing Dream”: Having debased and humiliated herself washing cars and pole dancing, Cuckoo (Keru Wang) nails an audition for “Perfect Diva,” To’s take on “China Idol” and secures her spot in the competition. Her captor, Tiger (Jacky Heung), debt collector by day, Mma fighter by night, and surprisingly loveable goofball by nature, excitedly calls in a series of debts owed him by an assembly line of woebegone schmucks with empty pockets.

We live in an era where celebrity has become more about fame than talent as those wishing for adulation do what they can to mimic the greats that came before them without ever worrying about proving whether they possess an ounce of originality. You want to impress the judges on “American Idol”? Show them you can be Madonna, Lady Gaga, and Rihanna all at once. You want to be the talk of the fighting world by unleashing your strength in the Ultimate Fighting Championships’ octagon? Switch up styles from boxing to Krav Maga with everything in-between to keep your opponents off-balance and your viewers entertained. Be the carbon copy of everything the zeitgeist craves, make as much money as you can during your fifteen minutes, and fade away.

There’s a bit of everything and most of it works in “Chasing Dream,” the first feature directed by Hong Kong ace Johnnie To since “Three” in 2016. Far from what fans of To’s hard-boiled crime dramas such as “Drug War” and “Election” might have expected, “Chasing Dream” invokes everything from gritty 1930s Warner Brothers musicals to fizzy screwball rom-coms and “Rocky” as it follows an Mma fighter and an aspiring singer who team up to take on the world and chase the Chinese Dream. Poking fun at blind ambition and celebrity culture while propelling viewers on a dizzy ride of heightened realism and unabashed melodrama,

Much has been speculated about Johnnie To since the release of “Three” in the summer of 2016. The ongoing urban legend about filming “Election 3” was one of the rumors, of course, as it was the releasing of an omnibus with other Hong Kong directors or – worst – his decision to retire from the scenes. Rumors didn’t stop, if anything intensified, when in November the first trailer of “Chasing Dream” was released a bit out of the blue. Said rumors turned then into conspiracy theories about his latest work but they will not be mention here; director To is old and wise enough to decide what to do. So, finally, the latest Milkyway production “Chasing Dream”, directed by Johnnie To and his frequent collaborator Wai Ka-fai is having its international premiere in Udine, a Festival very dear to To’s heart.

American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy is developing another great sounding new series called Ratched. The amazing-sounding series is set up at Netflix and it will center around the diabolical Nurse Ratched from the classic 1975 Jack Nicholson film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The reason I'm so excited about this is because she is one of my favorite film antagonists of all time. She's such a great character that you love to hate.
Nurse Ratched a.k.a. Nurse Ratshit will be played by Sarah Paulson, which is such perfect casting! She is going to be freakin' awesome in the role! The original character was masterfully played by Louise Fletcher. who won the Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of the villain.
The series will consist of 18 episodes and it scheduled to start shooting in 2018. Deadline offer the following story details:

On 22 April, the incomparable Jack Nicholson will reach 80. In celebration of this milestone birthday, the BFI is bringing the magnificent 1975 tragicomedy in which he starred, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, back to big screens across the UK on 14 April 2017. We are giving three lucky winners a pair of tickets to a BFI Southbank screening of the film between 20 and 24 April 2017
Nicholson’s unforgettable performance as the ingenious, heroic free spirit Rp ‘Mac’ McMurphy, who leads an uprising in the men’s ward of a mental hospital run by callous Nurse Rached (Louise Fletcher), won him his first Best Actor Oscar®.
Adapted from Ken Kesey’s best-selling 1962 novel, directed by Miloš Forman (Amadeus, Man on the Moon) and produced by Saul Zaentz (Amadeus, The English Patient) and Michael Douglas (his first producer role), One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest was only the second film ever to...

With a budget of $1.5 million, 2017 Best Picture winner “Moonlight” cost less than a 30-second ad during the Oscars (reported price: $2.2 million). And, among the category’s 89 winners, it stands as the lowest-budgeted film in the Academy Awards’ history.
To determine the 10 least expensive Best Picture winners, we looked back at each year, researched reported budgets, and then calculated them at 2017 dollar values. Although independent films have dominated the Oscars for the last decade, the only indie to make the cut from that period was “Crash.” Nor did Woody Allen’s “Annie Hall,” or some black-and-white studio classics like “Casablanca” or “The Lost Weekend.”
The 10 straddle almost every decade of the Oscars and come from either independent producers or smaller distributors (four of the 10 were released by United Artists).
For comparison, the most expensive film to win remains “Titanic;” its adjusted budget was $300 million more than “Moonlight.” That total dwarfs the...

Consider this one something to sing (and dance) about. At Sunday night’s Golden Globes award ceremony, Damien Chazelle’s Hollywood-set musical, “La La Land,” walked away with the award for Best Musical or Comedy Motion Picture after picking up big wins in a number of other categories, including Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Screenplay. A real musical! How about that!
Despite its wonderfully varied category — which included such contenders as “20th Century Women,” “Deadpool,” “Florence Foster Jenkins” and “Sing Street” — the Ryan Gosling- and Emma Stone-starring film has long been considered a frontrunner for not only this particular win, but further awards season glory. (Are we saying Best Picture? We’d be crazy not to.)

There are a few classic films we have come to expect to be amid the top five of many men’s favourite features, among which often sit the usual array of titles – the merits of The Godfather, Scarface, Star Wars and The Matrix having often been discussed over pints and the flipping of burgers on BBQs (we don’t wish to gender-stereotype you understand!) But there is one movie, that isn’t in the vein of these ball-busting action flicks, yet still holds a special place in the hearts of fellas (and plenty of women) the world over, and that’s the weepy tale of brotherhood-bonding The Shawshank Redemption. And we here at Boxwish HQ are very excited to let you know of the stage version’s move from Dublin to our nation’s capital this month. Yes, the Wyndam Theatre in London’s West End premieres its five month...
