Sonny Miller, known in the surfing world as one of the best cameramen around and who worked on Alcon Entertainment’s remake Point Break for a few days in February, has died of a heart attack, it was confirmed by an Alcon spokeswoman. Miller was 53. He was a specialist in filming in the water and surf, and he worked on Die Another Day and on the surf movie Blue Crush. Walking on Water may be the living embodiment of the old maxim ‘no risk, no reward.’ Though a documentary about surfing (with strong Christian overtones) would seem like a pretty easy target to hit, Walking fails to engage simply because it so clearly doesn’t want to possibly be seen as anything else than what its filmmakers set out to make, being one that affirms Christian faith and values. There’s nothing wrong with that, but if the directors were ever in doubt as to what the film would be about, or open to new experiences themselves in this journey, that process is in no way evident in the final product. This would be less of a liability if they were teaching a master class in theology, but they have instead produced a travelogue with startlingly little sense of adventure.

This surfer documentary (following in the recent footsteps of Bra Boys and Surfwise) is more than just attractive people running down the beach; the film details how competitive surfing transformed into the enormous money-maker it is today. Edward Norton narrates the project. Because he refuses to promote The Hulk, perhaps Norton will use his vacation time to publicize this surfer flick. After receiving great reviews at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, this documentary is sure to make a splash.Other names attached to the project include surfers Kelly Slater, Ian Cairns, and Tom Curren.
