Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Clara Rugaard and Til Schweiger lead the international cast of “Desperate Journey,” a newly-announced thriller set in the burlesque world of 1940s Paris.
The film — which has now wrapped production — comes from Emblem Pictures, and was written by two-time Oscar nominee Michael Radford (best known for directing 1994 global sensation “Il Postino”) and directed by Emmy winner Annabel Jankel (“Tell It to the Bees”).
Produced by Warren Derosa and Zsofi Kendel, “Desperate Journey” is based on the true story of Freddie Knoller (played by Tønnesen), a young man forced to flee Vienna as Nazi hysteria takes hold. Knoller’s captivating story has been widely recognized around the world and he was honored by the late Queen Elizabeth.
Rounding out the supporting cast of the film are Sienna Guillory (“Meg 2: The Trench,” “Clifford the Big Red Dog”), Steven Berkoff, Fernando Guallar (“Love Divided”), Hugo Spears (“The Full Monty...

Kerry Condon plays a potty-mouthed Ira gang leader and Neeson is the quiet antihero in this action thriller set at the height of the Troubles
Producer-director and veteran Clint Eastwood collaborator Robert Lorenz is now saddling up for this “Donegal western”. It is an action thriller that finds the cowboy spirit in the lush rolling grasslands of County Donegal in Ireland’s north-west, neighbouring Northern Ireland but geographically sequestered from the rest of the Republic.
In 1974, at the height of the Troubles, an Ira gang led by icy-hearted and potty-mouthed Doireann (Kerry Condon) accidentally kills a bunch of kids with a Belfast bomb blast. Without especially regretting the collateral damage, she leads her crew as they escape over the border into Donegal to lie low, fetching up on the outskirts of a village that appears populated by adorable stereotypes. These include a stolid Garda officer (Ciarán Hinds), and his best mate,...

Fittingly for a series in which everybody seems to be engaging in some form of Classic Hollywood cosplay, the Rosebud moment in BritBox’s Archie is delivered by an actor playing comedy icon Danny Kaye.
Affecting a stereotypical German therapist accent — accents on top of accents on top of accents is the Archie way — Kaye cautions young Dyan Cannon (Laura Aikman) that her relationship with the more seasoned Cary Grant (Jason Isaacs) is destined for complications with the warning, “Men who have difficult relationships with their mothers always carry it over to the women that they love.”
There’s no reason for Kaye to make such an observation if he hasn’t been watching the two previous hours of Jeff Pope’s four-episode production. But for the series’ actual audience, his analysis will come across as both obvious and superficial — a bit like Archie itself.
Ultimately, it’s a bit more complicated than that.

A raucous comedy from playwright Camilla Whitehill, “Big Mood” teams “Bridgerton” and “Derry Girls” alum Nicola Coughlan with ‘It’s a Sin’ star Lydia West to dive headlong into mental illness and friendship. Fremantle, heading global distribution, will showcase the project in Cannes as part of its Mipcom slate. The market kicks off Oct.16.
A divinely sardonic and captivating laugh riot, the upcoming Channel 4 series presents an earnest portrait of mania and biologically-induced despair in a world where mental health has been commodified and sanitized for ease of consumption. Whitehill manages a highly nuanced depiction of Coughlan’s Maggie, whose bipolar pendulum swings erratically, as she tries desperately to regain control of her fleeting agency while clinging tightly to longtime friend Eddie, played by West.
“We’ve done a lot of patting ourselves on the back as a society, saying, ‘We’re really facing mental health,’ but we’re not.

The paddywhackery’s as thick as the Oirish brogues and flavorful caricatures in Robert Lorenz’s In the Land of Saints & Sinners, a deadly serious thriller about violence and redemption in which a local lush pauses to grab his pint as gunfire tears up the village pub. Not since the merry blarney of Wild Mountain Thyme has a movie leaned so hard into Emerald Isle stereotypes, which makes it remarkable that Liam Neeson as a pipe-smoking, Dostoevsky-reading assassin manages to play it straight. Kerry Condon as an Ira spitfire with a fondness for the C-word adds some interest, but this is overwritten, overripe and likely destined to be streaming fodder.
While the film is set in 1974 when The Troubles were still raging, that bitter political conflict is merely background wallpaper for a formulaic faux-Western in the predictable script written by Mark Michael McNally and Terry Loane, which loads up...

Bringing Yennefer of Yengerberg to life on the screen is no small task. Integral to Andrzej Sapkowski's "The Witcher" novel series, Yen is a key presence in the lives of Geralt and Ciri, as she aids them through their journey at several points. Just like the Netflix series, the books paint Yen as a powerful, no-nonsense sorceress who eventually acts like a mother to Ciri and helps Geralt out of several unsavory situations. As one can imagine, franchise expectations surrounding Yen were pretty high when Anya Chalotra was cast for the role in the series, especially after some pockets of the fandom had a preconceived idea of Yen based on the video games.
While the Netflix series makes certain changes to her character — show Yen is much more amicable and emotionally open from the get-go — the core of her character is...

Shout! Studios presents The Magic Flute by Florian Zigl, executive produced by Roland Emmerich, at 325 theaters with expansion likely. A reimagining of the Mozart opera, it follows a present-day teen sent from London to the Austrian Alps on singing scholarship at the legendary Mozart boarding school. There, he discovers a century old forgotten passageway into the magical world of Mozart’s famed opera.
This Harry Potter-ish adventure fantasy stars Jack Wolfe as Tim Walker, who passes from school into the world of the opera and its many adventures as hero Prince Tamino. Wide releases may be picking up steam and Scream, but in terms of new specialty, and family fare, these isn’t much new competition this weekend.
Melissa Boag, EVP of Family Entertainment at Shout! Studios, hopes it will play with fans of magical adventure, Harry Potter, and classical music. Wolfe is a star of Netflix YA series Shadow & Bone.

Grabbers director Jon Wright’s latest, Unwelcome, blends modernism with Irish mythology. Described in a pitch as “Gremlins meets Straw Dogs,” Unwelcome introduces the far darrig, tiny bloodthirsty fae also dubbed redcaps for their signature red hats. Yet Wright, who co-wrote with screenwriter Mark Stay, struggles to find a consistent tone. The emphasis on gritty home invasion thriller clashes with the lighter horror-comedy creature feature.
Elation turns to trauma when a pregnancy celebration between Maya (Hannah John-Kamen) and her husband, Jamie (Douglas Booth), morphs into a harrowing home invasion nightmare. Jamie then conveniently inherits a house in rural Ireland, giving the couple the perfect opportunity to flee their dangerous London neighborhood. The locals are welcoming, though superstitious; Maya placates her neighbor (Niamh Cusack) with promises to continue the tradition of leaving proper blood sacrifices at the edge of their garden to appease the far darrig. Remembering to uphold her commitment...

Unwelcome is a horror movie directed by Jon Wright starring Hannah John-Kamen and Douglas Booth.
A mixture of horror and local bright spots that, as it progresses, stops being “scary” to introduce us to “something else” that, although it will not be that surprising, it is quite interesting.
The creatures that appear will be quite familiar to you (whether or not they resemble the Critters is up to you).
Movie Review Unwelcome (2023)
For a B-movie, it has its merits in some places, especially in terms of cinematography. It knows how to maintain its tone of a fable and coherently interconnect the protagonist landscape with the narrative and the personal dramas of each one. The acting is fine, but no one here is exactly going to win an Oscar.

British horror Unwelcome sees city couple Maya (Hannah-John Kamen) and Jamie (Douglas Booth) move to Ireland after a horrific home invasion leaves them shaken. But the new rural home isn’t the peaceful idyll they had hoped for, with a baby on the way. If the violent local family hired to do some building work weren’t enough, they also have murderous Redcaps to deal with. It’s a lot.
“It started originally from a conversation I had with Mark Stay, who wrote the film,” says director Jon Wright. “We were kind of almost making fun of each other, and making fun of ourselves really about what cowards we were, and how, if we were ever confronted with physical violence, how frightening we found it, and how useless we were at fighting. We were saying that being a pacifist is really a kind of...

Regé-Jean Page may not return as Simon Basset in "Bridgerton" season two, but we have a new handsome character to pine over in his absence. The Netflix show's second installment introduces Theo Sharpe (Calam Lynch), an apprentice at the printing shop where Lady Whistledown prints her gossip papers. He's an intellectual, working-class man with a keen interest in women's rights, which leads him to form a bond with Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie). Though Eloise is fiercely independent and tends to avoid suitors altogether, their friendship becomes increasingly romantic, showing a softer side to her character.
Eloise and Theo first cross paths in episode two when the former stumbles upon the latter's print shop while investigating Lady Whistledown's identity, unaware that the infamous storyteller is actually her best friend, Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan). "They'll need feeding... They'll be hungry." Well Go USA has revealed an official trailer for creature feature horror film Unwelcome, the latest from Irish filmmaker Jon Wright (of Grabbers and Robot Overlords previously previously). The film spins a tale of what happens to people who come in contact with the violent, bloodthirsty goblins known originally in Irish folklore as the fear dearg or "far darrig," now often referred to worldwide as the "Redcaps." Londoners Maya and Jamie escape their urban nightmare to the tranquility of rural Ireland only to discover malevolent, murderous goblins lurking in the gnarled, ancient wood at the foot of their new garden. Those nasty lil creatures. Unwelcome stars Hannah John-Kamen and Douglas Booth, with Niamh Cusack, Colm Meaney, Kristian Nairn, and Jamie-Lee O'Donnell. This look frighteningly good! Not only a bunch of scary little creatures, but the look and feel of it is top notch as well.

After releasing a divisive apocalyptic romp with High-Rise and the upcoming rip-roaring Free Fire, writer-director Ben Wheatley is also trying on a different hat. He’s executive produced Gareth Tunley‘s directorial debut The Ghoul, which has now received a first trailer.
Also penned by Tunley — who has directed a few short films as well as being in front of the camera for a number of Wheatley’s own projects — the thriller looks to be a mind-bending, twisting journey through the psychological underbelly of the U.K.
As noted below in an extended synopsis, Tunley looks to be paying homage to British genre-blenders that have blazed a cinematic trail before him such as Wheatley himself — largely with Kill List and Sightseers — as well as Nicolas Roeg.
See the trailer below.
Low budget Brit thriller, The Ghoul is an atmospheric slow-burn crime film more interested in psychology and the occult than in solving crimes.

"Just because we're plumbing the depths of the unconscious mind doesn't mean we can't have a cup of tea." BFI has debuted a trailer for a little crime thriller from the UK called The Ghoul, the feature debut of actor Gareth Tunley. The film stars Tom Meeten as a detective who goes undercover as a patient to investigate a psychotherapist. However, he gets in over his head and the "line between fantasy and reality begins to blur." Also featuring Alice Lowe, Rufus Jones, Niamh Cusack and Geoffrey McGivern. This seems to be a very trippy psychological thriller with sleek cinematography that will mess with your own mind. Take a look. We were disappointed when BBC Two axed spy thriller The Game after just one series, but its lead star Tom Hughes has revealed that he wasn't upset about the decision.
The Cemetery Junction actor told Digital Spy: "The Game works as a standalone series. The story was nicely tied up, and it reached a natural conclusion.
"You can always write more stories, and had there been a second series it would have been something I'd love to have done, but as far as I was concerned I was proud of it. I don't feel like it was diminished by not coming back, quite the opposite.
"I loved the job, and I learnt a hell of a lot from it. When I read it, it was always a standalone series for me, and if it came back it would have been a different show in many ways."

The Best of Men. co. BBC
The 2012 London paralympics are about to get under way and tonight’s BBC2′s drama The Best of Men gave sports fans a fascinating insight into the origins of the event. The paralympics were the brain child of a German-Jewish doctor named Ludwig Guttmann who moved to Oxford just before the war to escape persecution at the hands of the Nazis. Eddie Marsan (Little Dorrit) took on the role of the eccentric doctor who developed the notion of sports therapy.
The action began with Guttmann arriving at the Spinal Injuries Unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. Among his patients were the rowdy Sergeant Wynn Bowen (Rob Brydon) and the rather more somber William Gardiner (George Mackay). Guttman as portrayed by Eddie Marsan, handled his patients with relative ease but he had a much tougher time dealing with bureaucrats and work colleagues such as the hard-nosed...

Since Una Stubbs's film debut half a century ago, she's never been out of work. With a string of memorable TV series to her name, from Till Death Do Us Part to Sherlock, how does she feel now about her return to the National theatre stage at 75?
Una Stubbs can't quite believe she's being interviewed. "So who else are you speaking to from this production?" she asks when we meet backstage at the National Theatre. No one, I tell her. Just you. Behind her round-framed spectacles, Stubbs's eyes widen anxiously. "Oh," she says, brow crinkling. "Really?"
You might expect Una Stubbs to be more convinced by her own reputation. At 75, she has starred in some of the most memorable television programmes of the past four decades (Till Death Us Do Part, Give Us a Clue, Worzel Gummidge, Sherlock) and been directed on stage by such theatrical luminaries as Sir Peter Hall and Michael Grandage.
