As soon as a horrific crime has been committed, a network (usually Investigation Discovery) is chasing the story to turn it into the next big docu-hit. With little holding these networks back legally or financially, they can quickly produce compelling, detailed docuseries.
The question is: should they?
It's a complicated question, and we're not the first to ask it.
The voyeuristic obsession with some of the most unfathomable horrors that could happen to a person isn't new.
More than a century ago, people were desperate to learn new facts about the Jack the Ripper case as soon as they were revealed, and writers and publishers were happy to oblige.
There seem to be two leading schools of thought surrounding the ethics of this kind of media.

Welcome back to Origins, our recurring series that gives artists a space to break down everything that went into their latest release. Today, Ice-t digs into the twisted inspirations behind the latest Body Count release, “Psychopath.”
Body Count have returned with their new single, “Psychopath,” offering Ice-t the opportunity to step back into a different side of himself kept hidden while playing Sergeant Fin Tutuola on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
As Ice-t tells Consequence over Zoom, he relishes in extremes when making music — particularly when it comes to the macabre. “I think humans have a blood lust,” he explains. “We’re fascinated by it… we run to the car crash.”
For the multi-hyphenate, working with his hardcore/metal project, Body Count, offers a different kind of catharsis and escapism than playing a character on TV, or playing a character in his solo music. Their new release, “Psychopath...

Things are looking a lot less pretty and a little more dangerous for the liars in the season premiere of Pretty Little Liars: Summer School.
Picking up right where things left off, Pretty Little Liars: Summer School Season 1 Episode 1 starts with four murders within the first five minutes.
Aptly titled "Loose Ends," that's exactly what's taken care of. If the trend continues like a Scream movie, audiences may see each new season commence with a kill scene.
Sheriff Beasley, Chip, Madame Giry, Steve, and the drug dealer to Noa's mom all met a grizzly end right at the start, wiping the slate clean for a new killer to cut some fresh flesh.
On top of everything the girls went through, now they have to spend their summer attending school or otherwise face repeating the 10th grade. A fate worse than death.
The girls also seem to each have...

Outside of his popularity in the MCU, Jeremy Renner has been a part of some excellent character-driven films that showed his range as an actor. He first gained significant praise early in his career playing serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in the 2002 indie film Dahmer. He received further recognition for his incredible performances in The Town and The Hurt Locker.
Jeremy Renner as James Coughlin in The Town
His most overlooked film from the 2010’s is undoubtedly Arrival, directed by Denis Villeneuve years before he did Dune. Villeneuve’s film presented a unique sci-fi take, involving extra-terrestrial creatures which Renner was initially not sure of how it would turn out. The actor was blown away by the genius of Villeneuve and the brilliance of the film after watching it.

Let us start by talking about the ending. In his new Netflix special, titled Hot Cross Buns, comedian Dave Attell starts to play the recorder. No, it’s not what you think; the recorder happens to be a musical instrument that looks a lot like a flute. From my scant knowledge of music, I can tell that you can play a recorder if you are good with the flute. Anyway, Attell then insists on the audience looking under their seats, and voila, everybody finds a recorder! Well, a few people find the most obvious sex toys, a practical joke played by Attell, which suits the erotic nature of the comedy special. Attell playfully apologizes, then he comes to the main part. He urges everyone to play Hot Cross Buns with him. For the uninitiated, it happens to be a very popular nursery rhyme tune—yeah, I was not aware as...

After the big casting reveal of the four main protagonists in The Fantastic Four, fans next await the announcement of the villain actor, with Javier Bardem’s name thrown around recently. Interestingly, Bardem is eyed for the role of Galactus, who will be the central villain in the film, instead of Doctor Doom. However, there’s another actor whom Marvel has previously worked with and who would make the perfect cosmic villain in The Fantastic Four — Mads Mikkelsen.
No Country for Old Men star Javier Bardem is rumored to play Galactus
While Javier Bardem will make for a terrifying villain as he did in No Country for Old Men, Galactus is more of an antagonist than an outright villain, a fitting role for an actor like Mikkelsen. While Galactus is the Devourer of Worlds, he also provides the needed balance against Celestials in the universe.

There was a time when it looked as though Netflix was poised to become the streaming world's answer to HBO.
Like the network that brought you The Sopranos and Deadwood, Netflix created its own niche, and at first, the streaming giant seemed to be focused on supplementing its movie library with a wide array of prestige original series.
But in recent years, the Og streamer abandoned that strategy in favor of an approach that's less ambitious and -- well, more depressing.
These days, there's a pervasive feeling that Netflix is more TBS than HBO.
The platform that delivered Orange Is the New Black, The Crown, BoJack Horseman, and Narcos is now churning out far more pedestrian fare -- basically, the sort of stuff you'd find on basic cable.
The list of series recently renewed by the famously cancel-happy streamer includes:
Outer Banks, Blood & Water, Sweet Magnolias, Hearbreak High, and Savage Beauty.

Another edition of the Primetime Emmys is in the books, and Succession, The Bear and Beef cleaned up, earning almost every award they were nominated for in their respective categories. It’s crazy to think, but the nominees were announced way back in July, as the ceremony was postponed from September all the way until now due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Succession has taken home the Emmy for Best Drama Series every year it’s been nominated in, except the first season. To note, the (many) awards The Bear won tonight were for its first season rather than its even more acclaimed second season, which aired on Hulu after the cut-off for Emmy consideration. Just last night, The Bear won a whole raft of awards at the Cca’s for season 2, so expect them to be right back on the Emmy stage before long.

Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny have joined “Monster” Season 2 at Netflix, Variety has learned.
The two A-listers join previously announced stars Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez in the upcoming season of the anthology series, which will focus on the Menéndez brothers. The season is officially titled “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story” and is slated to debut later in 2024.
Erik (Koch) and Lyle Menéndez (Chavez) were convicted of the murders of their parents, José (Bardem) and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menéndez (Sevigny), in 1996. Authorities argued the brothers committed the murders to inherit their father’s fortune, while the brothers maintained that they killed their parents after years of mental and physical abuse.
“Monster” was co-created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. Both serve as executive producers along with Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, David McMillan, Louise Shore, and Carl Franklin. The first season focused on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.

The Tragic Tale of Jeffrey Dahmer’s Victim as a Beloved Character When we think of heinous crimes, few names evoke the chilling horror that Jeffrey Dahmer‘s does. His abhorrent acts against 17 young men and boys, predominantly from Black, Latino, and Asian communities, have left an indelible mark on our collective consciousness. The victims, lured from gay bars, bus stops, and malls, suffered fates that defy comprehension. Dahmer’s reign of terror, which spanned from 1978 to 1991, didn’t just end lives; it shattered families and communities. As we delve into this narrative, we must approach it with a deep sense...

André 3000’s debut solo album, New Blue Sun, is out now via Epic Records. Stream it on Apple Music or Spotify below.
The eight-song improvisational instrumental album is different from what fans might be expecting from the OutKast rapper: completely bar-free and no beats. Alongside the jazz musings of co-producer Carlos Niño, core sounds on the record include guitar, synth, and live sampling courtesy of Nate Mercereau, with Surya Botofasina on keyboards and synthesizers. André 3000 himself plays a variety of different wind instruments, including a digital wind instrument, a Maya flute, and others made of wood and bamboo.
“I’ve been interested in winds for a long time, so it was just a natural progression for me to go into flutes,” André said in a statement. “I just like messing with instruments and I gravitated mostly toward wind.”

André 3000 will release his debut solo album New Blue Sun this Friday, marking his first full-length LP since his group Outkast released its last record 17 years ago.
The November 17 release date was announced by André during an exclusive interview this morning with NPR. Though welcome news to fans, André cautioned that the new work might not be what longtime Outkast listeners might expect.
According to André, New Blue Sun will be “an entirely instrumental album centered around woodwinds; a celebratory piece of work in the form of a living, breathing, aural organism.” Released on Sony Music’s Epic Records, the album packaging will include a label stating “Warning No Bars,” meaning no rapped lyrics.
During the interview with NPR’s Rodney Carmichael, André said, “I don’t want to troll people. I don’t want people to think, Oh, this André 3000 album is coming! And you play it and like,...

Calls for André 3000 to release a solo record, or another recording with Outkast, have followed the musician for nearly two decades. It’s been 17 years since the last Outkast album, and the expectations around his musical output have only grown in that time — meanwhile, he has been roaming around various cities puttering around with his flute. That meandering has brought André 3000 to New Blue Sun, his debut solo album, set for release on Friday, Nov. 17.

André 3000 has announced the release of his long-awaited debut album, New Blue Sun, which will arrive on November 17th.
Right up front, however the OutKast rapper warns fans that the album is not a rap record. The cover artwork says as much, as it includes a label warning that the album contains “no bars.” Instead, according to NPR Music, New Blue Sun is an 87-minute collection of minimalist and experimental music featuring André 3000 playing a variety of flutes and other wind instruments. There are no bars, no beats, no vocals.
“I don’t want to troll people. I don’t want people to think, Oh, this André 3000 album is coming! Amazon has emerged the victor in another massive bidding war.
Following a competitive process, the Jennifer Salke-led streamer’s MGM Studios has won the rights to adapt the Vanity Fair story, “True Crime, True Faith: The Serial Killer and the Texas Mom Who Stopped Him,” which ran in the magazine’s September issue. The Julie Miller-penned piece reveals the story behind the 1981 abduction of Margy Palm by serial killer Stephen Morin outside a Texas Kmart. Though Morin never gained the pop culture notoriety of Ted Bundy or Jeffrey Dahmer, he was suspected of more murders than either was convicted of.
As Miller’s story showcases, Palm, who ultimately escaped, maintained a relationship with her captor. In fact, after Morin’s arrest, he began calling, writing and even sending Palm Christmas cards from prison. According to Miller, a friendship of sorts took hold, with Palm visiting Morin behind bars roughly 15 times,...

Each Halloween season, people flip on horror movies, venture into haunted houses, and otherwise dare to expose themselves to various goose-bumps-inducing experiences. And of course, many of us, myself included, love a good horror movie no matter the time of year. But why do we go out of our way to experience fear - exposing our psyches to serial killers, demons, and death in the process? Why would we want to be shocked, terrified, bamboozled, or creeped up on, especially in a world that offers more than enough to be afraid of already?
As it turns out, there are actually plenty of psychological and scientific reasons why many of us enjoy fear and horror. Ahead of Halloween, we're exploring why many of us yearn to get scared out of our minds instead of just popping on a rom-com and calling it a night.

In 1981, 19-year-old bright young boy Arne was prosecuted for murdering his landlord, Alan Bono. He was charged with committing murder in the first-degree, which, according to the law, translates into willfully killing someone with full intention. But Arne pleaded not guilty. And his defense was the first of its kind in the history of the United States—demonic possession. This is what the latest Netflix documentary, The Devil on Trial, is based upon. Sounds familiar, right? Yes, in case you are wondering, the popular film in the Conjuring franchise, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, was indeed based on the same story. This time around, we get to see the real people who went through it. The real Arne, who is the focal point of the documentary, his wife, Debbie Glatzel, and her brother David, who also got possessed. The other family members of the Glatzel family also appear as narrators.

David Dahmer is an American citizen who was propelled to unsolicited media attention upon the discovery of his brother’s hideous crimes. The younger brother of American serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, Dahmer would have remained unknown to the general public without his blood ties with Jeffrey, who murdered and dismembered 17 male victims between 1978 and 1991. While they were separated from each other at a young age, the brothers spent a few years as a family in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Infamous for his ‘twisted and ironically heroic’ acts of murder, the story of Christopher Scarver shook the world in the early 1990s. The man credited for ending Jeffrey Dahmer‘s reign of terror took matters into his own hands and brutally killed Dahmer while on a routine cleaning duty together. This earned him multiple sentences and a close-to-nothing chance of ever getting out of prison. While Scarver Sr. was closed off to the real world, he still has some ties with it. Before he was incarcerated, he was expecting a son, however, he never got to see him as he was...

Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal, Netflix‘s docuseries about the crimes of South Carolina aristocratic lawyer Alex Murdaugh, is often a frustrating experience. By insisting upon jumping right into the details of this very current case before the proverbial bodies are even cold, Murdaugh Murders falls well short of the definitive standard viewers look for in a true crime documentary.
