Doctor Who is an iconic series franchise that first premiered back in 1963 on the BBC! Being a science fiction series, Doctor Who has undergone several recasts, reboots (not completely), and, rebrands.

The series has, however, never left BBC’s side since its inception in 1963. The Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies, talked about how he wants the franchise to be as big as Marvel or Star Wars. Hence, in a swift move, Davies revealed that he is not afraid to break a franchise tradition as long as Doctor Who becomes a big universe like the MCU!

If you're a Doctor Who fan, then chances are you'll know the series has primarily been shot in Wales since its 2005 relaunch. Various locations used for iconic scenes have become must-visit destinations, while Cardiff even featured a "Doctor Who Experience" for a time.
The latest series of the long-running sci-fi TV show returned last night and, while Disney+'s involvement has given Doctor Who a much bigger budget, much of the action remains rooted in Wales.
During a recent press event for the series, we asked stars Ncuti Gatwa (The Doctor) and Millie Gibson (Ruby Sunday) what they enjoyed about filming in Cardiff before wondering why returning showrunner Russell T Davies chose to keep the Whoniverse there.
After all, when the news broke that Disney+ would stream the series, some worried that we'd see the franchise "Americanized." That hasn't happened, and it turns out there's a very good reason why not.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the first two episodes of Doctor Who Season 1, “Space Babies” and “The Devil’s Chord.”] Russell T. Davies, in his return to Doctor Who, has given himself quite a lot to play with, just with the three 60th anniversary specials and the Christmas episode. There are villains on the way, a major mystery about the newest companion’s origins, and more for Ncuti Gatwa‘s Doctor. With the first two episodes of the newest Season 1, Maestro (Jinkx Monsoon) is revealed to be one of the Toymaker’s children and teases that “the one who waits is almost here.” (The Toymaker previously warned the Doctor of this same being.) Davies has also teased a running story building to a devastating finale. But is that building to “the one who waits” reveal? “It may be the Toymaker’s legions. It may not. It may be bigger than that,” teases Davies. “In fact, it’s definitely ...

It turns out love really is all you need. Well, love and a Time Lord willing to fight off the spirit of music through a delightfully campy song battle that sees literal musical notes fill the air. The showdown between the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa), Ruby (Millie Gibson), and the chaotic being known as Maestro (Jinkx Monsoon) in the new season's second episode might be one of the goofiest things that's happened on "Doctor Who" recently -- and it's not even the most over-the-top part of the episode. "The Devil's Chord" takes some deliciously weird risks, the biggest of which is centering its drama on "characters" who aren't exactly historical figures yet: The Beatles.

This Doctor Who article contains spoilers.
From 1963 to 2020, the title character of Doctor Who belonged to an alien species from Gallifrey, generally known as Time Lords. Throughout the wibbly-wobbly Who canon, not all Gallifreyans are Time Lords, but all Time Lords were certainly two-hearted Gallifreyans, and the Doctor was always both. That is, until they weren’t. In the 2020 Thirteenth Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) episode “The Timeless Children,” it was revealed that the Doctor was actually the first Time Lord, and that the ability to regenerate was harvested from them, and then integrated into Time Lord culture. Basically, the Doctor was still a Time Lord, but the actual background of the originating species they hailed from, became a retroactive mystery.
And now, in the 2024 Doctor Who “season one” the newly bi-generated Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) is mentioning this new canon a lot. Here’s how Doctor Who is honoring this controversial continuity change,...

From 2010 to 2023, when "Doctor Who" fans claimed they missed former showrunner Russell T Davies, they usually meant they missed his great character work. The original Davies' run, from season 1 through 4 of the revival series, is notable in how it clearly presents its companions not just as relatable, working-class women, but how it puts them at the center of the narrative. It's not necessarily a better approach than Davies' successor Steven Moffat (who would generally make the Doctor the point-of-view character), but it's a totally reasonable approach to be nostalgic for.
What those fans probably weren't referring to is Davies' questionable taste in monsters. Although he occasionally gives us some classic villains, like whatever that thing was in "Midnight," his original aliens tend to be on the sillier, juvenile side of things. Davies is the guy who gave us not one, not two, but three different episodes focused on the Slitheen,...

Exclusive: The British government has fired a warning shot at Netflix amid the Baby Reindeer safeguarding scandal, saying it will be held to “high standards” under new streaming laws.
The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (Dcms) reminded Netflix that the UK Media Bill will hand regulator Ofcom world-leading powers to police content on streaming services.
Asked if the legislation would empower Ofcom to pursue concerns over Baby Reindeer, a government spokesperson told Deadline: “UK broadcasters are subject to appropriate rules to ensure protections for audiences, contributors and other affected individuals. Our Media Bill will make mainstream video-on-demand services subject to similar high standards.”
Ofcom will draft and enforce a new Video-on-Demand Code, allowing viewers, contributors, and others to complain about accuracy issues and potentially harmful content.

Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson begin their excellent adventures in earnest: here’s our Doctor Who Space Babies spoiler-filled review.
Final warning: this review contains spoilers.
For those of us who grew up in the era of wobbly monsters, episodes of Doctor Who afforded one set and a bit of studio time, and the same corridor shot from multiple angles, this new era of the show still takes a little getting used to. To see Doctor Who able to segue into a side moment where there are convincing-looking dinosaurs roaming and for it not even to be the main thrust of the story is quite something really.
But here we are, and all power to it. I’m betting a pound that the butterfly effect at the start comes back towards the end of the series, though.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Doctor Who Season 1 episode “The Devil’s Chord.”] Simply put, Jinkx Monsoon is fun, both onscreen as Maestro and off, discussing her villainous turn on Doctor Who. The Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) head to the ’60s to see The Beatles in the recording studio, only to discover something is really wrong with music. And to bring it back, they must face off against Maestro, who turns out to be one of the Toymaker’s children. They are defeated, in a music battle that features The Beatles, but as they’re banished, they warn, “the one who waits is almost here.” Below, Jink Monsoon discusses her guest spot and shares hopes for a return appearance. I know that Russell T. Davies approached you to play Maestro, so talk about the conversations you had with him. Jinkx Monsoon: So before the Maestro conversation, Russell and I had...

To use some technical musical terminology – this one’s a banger.
Like most fans, I was very intrigued when I heard that Russell T Davies would be returning as showrunner. Having decisively brought Doctor Who into the 21st century, remade it in his own image and delivered a bona fide cultural phenomenon, Davies had subsequently gone on to make several other successful shows. It’s not like he needed to come back. He had nothing to prove. So it seemed safe to assume that if he was going return, it was because he had new ideas, new things he wanted to say, new experiments he was hungry to try out.
That was an exciting prospect. The Tennant specials had swagger, but they were something of a victory lap – comfortable 60th anniversary reunions tying up loose ends, though obviously not without surprises. Then...

Following its critically acclaimed first season, AMC’s “Interview with the Vampire” is back for round two, and the Gothic drama based on Anne Rice’s beloved novels remains one of TV’s best and brightest despite the inherent darkness within.
The new season (premiering Sunday at 9/8c on AMC and AMC+) picks up in the aftermath of the jaw-dropping reveal that closed out the show’s freshman outing: Louis’ (Jacob Anderson) loyal assistant Rashid is actually his vampire lover, Armand (Assad Zaman). Once again the show makes excellent use of its unique interview framing to jump between multiple timelines as Louis weaves a complicated tale for journalist Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian), one that explores his relationships with both Armand and Claudia, beginning with their adventures in Paris in the 1940s.

In the parlance of the times, we are so back.
After the three triumphant Tennant/Tate specials, I’ll confess that “The Church on Ruby Road” left me feeling slightly apprehensive. While an effective showcase for Ncuti Gatwa’s charisma, as a forecast for the new era I found it to be overly frenetic, bordering on slapdash. Christmas specials are always going to be broader affairs, but this one frequently felt like a first draft held together with little more than the raw enthusiasm of all involved.
Happily, “Space Babies” is more solid in every respect. It’s well structured, economical and – crucially – very entertaining. And while I doubt it will be topping many all-time favourite lists, that’s fine, because that’s not really its job.

“Doctor Who’s” Ncuti Gatwa just faced off against the franchise’s wackiest, most over-the-top villain yet. And that was before they started singing.

The Doctor Who press juggernaut materialized in New York last week, bringing with it leading stars Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson. The iconic, long-running BBC science-fiction show about a time-and-space traveling alien debuts its latest season on streamer Disney+ on Friday.

Lesser known internationally is Gibson, who turns 20 in June. In the U.K., the actor made a name for herself in the television soap opera, Coronation Street (which is even longer-running than Doctor Who).

While filming episode one of “Doctor Who” season 14, entitled “Space Babies,” Millie Gibson had to do the impossible: keep the attention of 20 infants at once. Although she was bearing her soul in a speech integral to her character’s backstory, the babies kept dozing off and losing their attention to the flashing lights of the space-age set. So, to keep their little eyes focused on her, she delivered her lines while a nursery rhyme played on her phone just out of camera view.
“It was so hard honestly,” recalled Gibson. “It was the most bizarre thing but it will stay in my mind forever.”

Baby Reindeer‘s real-life Martha has slammed the Netflix series as an “obscene” and “defamatory” work of fiction, claiming that she is instructing lawyers to sue the streamer.
In an interview with Piers Morgan (full video below), Scottish lawyer Fiona Harvey said she had been “forced” into telling her side of the story after Baby Reindeer became an enormous global hit.
Baby Reindeer was billed as a “true story” and provides a searingly raw account of comedian Richard Gadd’s experience with an alleged stalker, known as Martha.
But Harvey told Morgan that it was a “work of hyperbole” and “work of fiction” and claimed that she was prepared to test her argument in a court of law.

The Guinness World Records once listed the BBC’s Doctor Who as the “most successful Science Fiction television series in the world,” and, in November 2023, the show turned an impressive 60 years old. Doctor Who originally ran from 1963 to 1989 and was relaunched in 2005.
Despite its grand age, it’s not demonstrating any signs of slowing down.
Former showrunner Russell T Davies (fresh from his success with It’s A Sin) returns to the franchise following last year’s Christmas specials with fan-favorites David Tennant and Catherine Tate. With the 14th season — which, for the first time ever, will premiere simultaneously worldwide thanks to Disney+ (on Friday at 7 p.m.) — Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education and Barbie) officially becomes the newest incarnation of the errant Time Lord.
But, what about those who have already played the role of The Doctor (a.k.a. Doctor Who) over the past seven decades? Below is your 101 to all of the lead actors.

Doctor Who mastermind Russell T. Davies is weighing in on the controversy surrounding Netflix‘s smash hit series Baby Reindeer.
The writer said in an interview with The Times that the BBC would have been “much stricter” when it comes to disguising the real-life identities of the characters created by Scottish comedian Richard Gadd. “Compliance and editorial policy drives us mad here but I sleep at night,” Davies said.
His comments follow a whirlwind of scrutiny for Netflix producers, and even fans of the series, who took it upon themselves to try and unveil the real people depicted on the show, including the trans woman Gadd’s character dates, played by Nava Mau, and the TV producer who sexually assaults him, portrayed by Tom Goodman-Hill.
On Thursday, British host Piers Morgan will interview a woman named Fiona Harvey who claims to be the inspiration behind the show’s stalker, Martha.

Russell T Davies is the latest high-profile TV industry figure to criticize Netflix for allowing real-life Baby Reindeer characters to be identified online.
In an interview with The Times, the Doctor Who writer said the BBC would have been “much stricter” with editorial compliance processes had it shown Richard Gadd’s hit stalker series.
Davies, who has extensive experience working with BBC compliance executives on Doctor Who, said: “Compliance and editorial policy drives us mad here but I sleep at night.”
Since Baby Reindeer premiered last month, Gadd’s alleged stalker, known as Martha in the series, has been identified as Fiona Harvey. Others have been wrongly accused amid rampant online speculation.
Benjamin King, Netflix UK’s senior public policy director, said on Wednesday that the streamer and producer Clerkenwell Films took “every reasonable precaution in disguising the real-life identities of the people involved in that story.”

It’s my obligatory caveat that I am not a Doctor Who “fan,” per se. I’m much more Who-curious.
While I was traumatized by Tom Baker’s Doctor in childhood, I’ve happily sampled the introduction of each new Doctor since the Christopher Eccleston reboot in 2005. After two or three episodes, I tend to tune out, checking back in at key or particularly acclaimed installments. For those keeping score, David Tennant’s Doctor was the one I watched the most of in total, though I stuck with Matt Smith for the longest in the beginning (Karen Gillan’s Amy Pond was responsible for a lot of that). Peter Capaldi, probably the Doctor I was most excited for based on previous credits, did the least for me.
Draw your own conclusions.

No television franchise sees changes like Doctor Who, but high turnover can be overrated when you’ve built a world as rich as this one. Our first glimpse of Series 14 and the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) came at the end of the Christmas specials in 2023. Gatwa came out the gate blazing and established himself as a fun-loving doctor, breaking the mold in terms of performance and style for the iconic character. Of course, Gatwa has already broken barriers as the first black and openly queer Doctor. On top of his groundbreaking aspects, the pure energy and charisma Gatwa’s brought to the role already makes it feel like we’ve hit the jackpot.
Doctor Who Series 14 Plot
The new Doctor begins noticing strange accidents throughout London. As he investigates, he meets a young woman – Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson). Abandoned at a Church as a baby, Ruby wants to know about her birth parents.

Doctor Who is one of the most iconic and storied sci-fi franchises ever. However, while the long-running British TV series commands a legion of loyal Whovians across the globe, its low budget has held the show back from reaching the same heights as, say, Star Trek and Star Wars. However, with Disney+ now involved, Doctor Who stands a very real chance of breaking into the mainstream and attracting a larger audience than ever before. That was evident from last year’s specials and, with Russell T. Davies (who relaunched the series to great success in 2005) at the helm, the Whoniverse is in undeniably safe hands.

It's a strange time to be a Whovian. The show has recently switched showrunners yet again, but this time it's to someone we already know. Russell T. Davies ran "Doctor Who" from seasons 1 through 4; although he was controversial back in his day, the fandom warmed to him more than ever the moment he was out the door, replaced by the less character-focused Steven Moffat. For years, the Moffat vs Davies debate raged across the fandom, before the unambiguously disappointing Chibnall era (seasons 11-13) made the whole thing feel a little trivial. Once we were offered neither inventive timey-wimey plots nor compelling characters to follow, both Moffat and Davies seemed perfectly fine.
When Davies first returned for a string of 60th Anniversary specials last year, this idea was only reinforced; the episodes were often cheesy and the sci-fi plotlines rarely held up to scrutiny, but there was a clear heart and...

When it comes to the concept and idea of change, resistance always goes hand in hand with it. Anything different is bound to get pushback from the traditionalists. This is something the media is very familiar with. Audiences are unable to witness the ideals they hold dear to themselves, which are washed away by something new.

Russell T Davies and his thoughts on writing Doctor Who, with the pressure that comes along with it. More here.
Taking to the stage at the UK premiere of the new series of Doctor Who last week, showrunner Russell T Davies was part of a Q&a session, along with stars Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson. Given that he knows what’s coming long into the future of Doctor Who, it’s perhaps no surprise that so many questions were aimed in his direction.
After a screening of the first two episodes of the new run – Space Babies and The Devil’s Chord – Davies was asked about the process of coming up with a new Doctor Who script. In particular, the pressure he must feel, not least in an era where Disney+ is pumping unheard of amounts of money for Doctor Who into the show.

The Beatles make an appearance in Doctor Who’s new series – but not with the costly music. Russell T Davies explains more.

When Doctor Who returned in 2005, it was with Russell T Davies at the helm. Next month, the series will once again be relaunched with a new season 1 and, you guessed it, Davies calling the shots.
History has repeated itself, and following in the footsteps of Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, Jodie Whittaker, and Tenant for a second time, will be Ncuti Gatwa.
He first played the Doctor in last year's 60th anniversary and Christmas specials, will take centre stage alongside Millie Gibson, and makes history as the first openly queer Black lead Time Lord.
There's inevitably been backlash to the casting - despite Gatwa stealing the show in his previous appearances - but the Rwandan-born, Scotland-raised actor isn't sweating the haters.

Ncuti Gatwa made history when he appeared as the fifteenth Doctor in BBC’s Doctor Who. The Barbie star became the first Black and queer actor to portray the role, making his debut in the third 60th-anniversary special episode ‘The Giggle’. He took over from David Tennant, who returned to the role for the anniversary specials.
The fourteenth series of the show will begin airing in May of this year. The show also received a streaming partner in Disney Plus, which reportedly gave the show a bigger budget. While no particular numbers have been revealed, Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies mentioned that they could make the best episode even without the money.

Doctor Who is one of the most successful timeless tales. Despite existing for almost two decades, it still has no intention of slowing down anytime soon, with the next doctor in the saga being Ncuti Gatwa. But times are changing, and the casting of Gatwa as the core doctor marks a significant milestone for the franchise because the actor is the first openly queer Black actor to take on the role.
The Doctor Who saga.
However, instead of letting it stay as a milestone for the saga, the Rwandan-Scottish actor has been caught making one too many controversial statements regarding “racism,” which have unarguably enraged even the viewers and die-hard fans of the franchise. In fact, the most recent comment from Gatwa is a bit too contentious, and could just end up coming back to haunt the show later on.

Doctor Who has a habit of taking a throwaway line and making it into a big deal.
In 60th anniversary special “Wild Blue Yonder”, Russell T. Davies wrote what seemed like a passing joke about Isaac Newton mishearing the word ″gravity″ as “mavity” before committing to the bit and changing the word in the timeline from that point onwards, making the gag not so inconsequential after all.
Mavity isn’t alone in the show’s history. Throwaway lines have been seized upon and expanded over the years, some by the show’s fandom, but also by its writers. What started as world-building, texture or a dramatic beat has become the foundation for a whole new level of storytelling.

Russell T. Davies was the man behind the golden age of Dr. Who with David Tennant. Throughout his tenure, ratings were consistently between 7.5 and 8 million per episode. This put David Tennant up there with the Fifth Doctor Peter Davison (1982-84), but behind the Fourth Doctor Tom Baker (1974-80), who at times attracted over 10 million viewers. Of course, it's worth noting that both of these were before the era of so many alternative channels.
First impressions from the Christmas special, The Church on Ruby Road, suggest that Ncuti Gatwa has the personality that the Doctor has lacked somewhat since Tennant left the role. And the chemistry between him and Millie Gibson, who plays Ruby, also gave us something to look forward to when the new season lands on May 11.

When Ncuti Gatwa makes his first appearance as the 15th Doctor in the science-fiction series “Doctor Who,” he isn’t wearing any pants.
In a 60th-anniversary special released in December, the previous Doctor — played by series icon David Tennant — subverts the show’s long-standing practice of regeneration: Instead of simply transforming into the next Doctor, he literally splits in half, bringing Gatwa’s Doctor into the world alongside him. In the process, the two divide the clothes of Tennant’s Doctor between them, leaving Gatwa in nothing but a dress shirt and a pair of tighty-whities.
“Oh, my God, that first costume fitting!” Gatwa says, bursting into an infectious fit of laughter. It’s a frequent occurrence as he speaks with Variety on a chilly March day over lemon ginger tea at the Langham hotel in London. “I was like, ‘Are you joking?!’ They showed me a pair of [underwear] and...

We’ve had goblins on Doctor Who, now it’s time for gods.
Drumming up excitement for the new season in the latest edition of Doctor Who Magazine, showrunner Russell T Davies is promising anarchy. In a preview of episode two “The Devil’s Chord,” Davies teases the wild, raw, tumbling, free-falling energy that comes from introducing “a godlike element into Doctor Who”.
That godlike element? It’s a god, as played by drag performer and Broadway star Jinkx Monsoon.
In “The Devil’s Chord” – which comes out bundled with episode one on May 10/11 depending on your time zone – Monsoon plays Maestro aka the god of music. Her character is described in the pages of Dwm 603 as “a maleficent god”, “a deity with daddy issues”, and the episode’s titular devil.

First, apologies if this violates Den of Geek’s house style guidelines, but Lol. Lol at everyone who thought that Russell T Davies would return to Doctor Who as the avenging angel of ‘The Fans’, riding in and heroically retconning out all the plot points they had been complaining about for the last four years.
Davies has announced he has no plans to retcon Chris Chibnall’s controversial, canon-shaking Timeless Child plot twist, which revealed that the Doctor is no child of Gallifrey, but a foundling discovered at the mouth of a dimensional rift from universes unknown. Neither is he going to let that twist simply sit in the Doctor’s backstory, present but unacknowledged, alongside other inconvenient facts like the Moon being an egg, Earth’s forests spontaneously multiplying to help burn off solar flares, and the Doctor being best mates with Winston Churchill.
No, instead Davies has said...

When Russell T Davies goes to bat for something, everybody had better duck because that man does not mess about.
Ever since Rtd returned to the show’s top job, he’s stood shoulder-to-shoulder with his predecessor Chris Chibnall and waved away calls from fans to either ignore or rewrite Chibnall’s biggest change to Doctor Who lore: the Timeless Child revelation. Now, Davies is saying that not only will the new series work with the Timeless Child concept, it’s the backbone of the new story.
Davies is summarised in Entertainment Weekly as saying that much of companion Ruby Sunday’s arc was inspired by the Timeless Child plot point. In series 14, both Ruby and the Doctor will be curious about their origins and their similar histories as foundlings will loom large. “That story’s going to be the spine of the whole show,” Davies told EW.
As a refresher,...

Varada Sethu is joining the Doctor Who team in 2025, and will star alongside Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson.
Back in January, it was reported that Andor star Varada Sethu had been cast as the new Doctor Who companion and that Millie Gibson, who plays Ncuti Gatwa’s current companion Ruby Sunday, would be leaving, but would also continue to make sporadic appearances in the series. There was no comment from the BBC.
Now, the BBC has issued a statement confirming not only that Sethu is the new companion, though it did not reveal details about her character, but also that Gibson is staying on in the Tardis. As such, Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor will have two companions.
Sethu said, “I feel like the luckiest person in the world. It is such an honour to be a part of the Whoniverse, and I’m so grateful to the whole Doctor...

Shonda Rhimes has made more than her share of era-defining TV drama, but there is one British classic she reveals she wishes she had made herself.
Rhimes, the creator of Bridgerton which returns for a third season on Netflix in May, told The Times of London she enjoys watching other TV shows including Succession, Beef and The Bear, but there is one she wishes she had created –the UK’s longrunning sci-fi epic Doctor Who.
She said: “I have been obsessed with that show for ever.”
And when she met Doctor Who’s show-runner, Russell T Davies, credited with rebooting the show over a decade ago and bringing it to new heights? “I was so nervous.”
Rhimes’s achievements are of similar size. Having created Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, she told the newspaper she was persuaded to move to Netflix because she wanted to have fun – she didn’t...
