Oxford just inherited a sizable collection of letters and manuscripts from former poet laureate Cecil Day-Lewis, The Guardian reports. The archive was donated to the University’s Bodleian Library by his children, actor Daniel Day-Lewis and food writer Tamasin Day-Lewis.
The collection includes letters exchanged between the elder Day-Lewis and other notable figures, such as Kingsley Amis, Alec Guiness, and W.H. Auden. The latter, with whom Day-Lewis was especially chummy following their undergraduate years at Oxford, offers previously unseen criticism of Day-Lewis’ work that ranges from subtle (“The lines ‘For there’s no wonder … When any echo waits’, sound as...

Tamasin and Daniel Day-Lewis hand over poet laureate's archive including manuscripts and letter from Wh Auden.
Wh Auden did not want to appear condescending but his criticism of Cecil Day-Lewis's poem would certainly appear to be crushing: "You are not taking enough trouble about your medium, your technique of expression," he wrote, adding that one line sounded as if Day-Lewis was waiting for his tea.
The letter, from around 1928 or 1929 when both poets were still in their 20s, is one of many to appear in an extensive literary archive that has been donated to Oxford University's Bodleian Library by Day-Lewis's children, the actor Daniel Day-Lewis and the food writer Tamasin Day-Lewis.
The library will on Tuesday host a symposium celebrating the life and work of the former poet laureate and marking what Chris Fletcher, keeper of special collections, said was an extremely generous gift.

The Hollywood director is trying to raise money for The Goon. Give enough and you could get a private screening with the film-maker
David Fincher's last film made £145m worldwide. The one before took £140m, plus three Oscars, a Golden Globe and a Bafta for best director. On the side, Fincher directs glossy ads for big agencies. Now: give this man your money.
"Help us make a New Kind of animated film ... one that's Loud, Violent and Offensive To Your Grandma." So runs the invite on the Kickstarter page for The Goon, which would be produced by Fincher and directed by Eric Powell, who wrote the comic strip of the same name, featuring killer robots, demon priests and giant fishmen. They're not funding a whole film: they're raising $150,000 to cut a feature-length storyboard with sound effects "to give Hollywood a complete look at the Goon film's potential".
As with most crowdfunding,...

The sister of Hollywood actor Daniel Day-Lewis has cheated death in a terrifying car crash.
Tamasin Day-Lewis, a documentary maker and TV chef, was driving along an icy road near her home in south west England when her car skidded and flipped onto its roof, landing upside down in a ditch.
Shaken Day-Lewis, 57, had to kick open the driver's door and scramble out of the vehicle after the crash. She was left with a bruised back but was otherwise uninjured.
Day-Lewis, a chef on U.K. channel The Good Food Network, says, "I could have died. The passenger side was completely crushed... I was only doing 30 miles per hour on a straight stretch of road and tried to steer away from another car coming towards me. I swerved and swung it back up the verge, up the bank and it flipped - I thought 'this is it'."...
