The Astounding, the Amazing, and the Unknown, my new novel, is what I like to call faction -- a hybrid of fact and fiction. A fact: Thanks to editor John W. Campbell, golden age science fiction writers Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, and L. Sprague de Camp were hired by the Navy to work on military research at the Philadelphia Naval Yard during World War II. A fact: L. Ron Hubbard was a pulp science fiction writer, a friend of Heinlein’s, and was court martialed for, well, basically incompetency during the war -- yet he always claimed he was off on super-secret missions in the Pacific. A fact: Nikola Tesla built a strange communication tower at Wardenclyffe, Long Island. A fact: a legend has grown up since the 1960s that experiments in Philadelphia may have led to a ship being transported from the harbor, to Virginia, and back again.

Marcus Nispel's Conan film, due out next year, frankly terrifies me. I have absolutely zero faith in it. Of course, for nerds like me, Conan is a favorite character of mine -- I've read several of the original Robert E. Howard stories, as well as a few of the more contemporary ones (particularly those written by Robert Jordan and L. Sprague de Camp). The original, John Milius-directed Schwarzenegger film is, while a woefully inaccurate portrayal, still an enjoyable, if somewhat insane, sword-and-sandals romp (though we don't have to mention the sequel).
All of the information that's come out about Nispel's version is pretty much lousy, however. A few months ago, I recapped what we know so far, and it's worth revisiting:
The director of Pathfinder and the remake of Friday the 13th. A lead actor (Jason Momoa) from "North Shore" and "Baywatch." The screenwriters from A Sound of Thunder and Sahara.

“He was the best.”
“I spent my life staring at his paintings.”
“I can’t believe he’s gone.”
The comments on the internet forums go on for pages and pages, everyone saying the same thing, each in his or her own words. Frank Frazetta, 20th century pop culture and fantasy artist, showed generations of readers what the words in the books were saying. This is what Burroughs’ La of Opar looked like as she stood defending her jewels; this is what Tarzan looked like as he prowled the jungles of our minds… This is how it looks inside these pages. And we did stare, and knew he was correct — of course that’s what life on Mars looked like! How could it be anything other than that?
His output spanned book covers, magazine covers, film posters, comic strips and books, album covers, paintings, murals; it hangs in private collections...

We regret to announce the passing of George Scithers, who died Monday after suffering a heart attack on Saturday at the age of 80. He was an award winning editor, winning the Hugo award four times, and a World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 2002.
Scithers' first published fiction, the story "Faithful Messenger," appeared in If magazine in 1969. His involvement in the field, however, dates back to 1957, when he began submitting to the fanzine Yandro. Two years later, he began publishing the Hugo Award-winning fanzine Amra. The term "swords and sorcery" first appeared there, and Amra became a leading proponent of the genre. Several of the articles originally published in Amra were later re-printed as part of two volumes about Conan the Barbarian which Scithers co-edited with L. Sprague de Camp.
In 1963, Scithers chaired Discon I, the 21st Worldcon, held in Washington, D.C.. He was a regular parliamentarian for business...

Teen star Lindsay Lohan and Oscar-winning thesp Adrien Brody will team up for the romantic comedy Speechless according to Variety. Based on a short story by fantasy scribe L. Sprague De Camp, the indie pic formerly known as The Guided Man is a modern-day take on the classic Cyrano de Bergerac tale, where an introverted guy signs up with a agency that allows him to communicate via a computerized chip planted on a more confident public speaker. Saved filmmaker Brian Dannelly directs the project, which is expected to begin production later this year.
